Dawn crept slowly through the forest, spilling pale silver light across the earth as if the moon itself refused to fully retreat. The trees stood tall and ancient, their shadows long and shifting, whispering secrets in the quiet aftermath of chaos.

Aria Nightshade sat at the edge of a small clearing, her back pressed against the rough bark of a fallen tree. Her knees were pulled tightly to her chest, arms wrapped around them as if holding herself together.

Her entire body ached.

Every breath reminded her of the night before.

The rogues.

Their snarls.

Their hunger.

The moment she had been certain she wouldn’t survive.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted them in front of her, staring as though they belonged to someone else.

“I’m not defenseless” she whispered under her breath.

But the words didn’t feel real.

Not yet.

Her throat tightened.

“I just don’t know what I am.”

The forest answered with silence.

No movement. No danger.

Just an eerie stillness that made her skin prickle.

Even the birds seemed cautious, their songs softer than usual, as though they sensed something unnatural lingering in the air.

Aria exhaled slowly, trying to calm the storm inside her.

For a moment, she thought she might actually rest.

Then it hit her.

A presence.

Heavy.

Powerful.

It pressed against her senses like an invisible force, sending a sharp chill racing down her spine.

Her breath caught instantly.

She froze.

Every instinct screamed at her to run.

But she didn’t.

She couldn’t.

Because she knew.

“Kael…” she breathed.

The name barely left her lips before he appeared.

Stepping out from between the trees like a shadow given form.

The Alpha of Shadowfang.

Kael.

He moved with quiet authority, each step deliberate, controlled, effortless. The rising sun brushed against his dark hair, but it was his eyes that held her completely captive.

Golden.

Bright.

Unnaturally intense.

They seemed to glow, even in daylight.

“You survived.”

His voice was low, steady.

But there was something beneath it.

Something restrained.

Relief.

Aria swallowed, pushing herself to her feet despite the protest in her body.

I did, she said, her voice unsteady. “But barely.”

She wrapped her arms around herself instinctively.

There were rogues…more than one. They surrounded me. I thought…Her voice faltered. “I thought that was it.”

Kael’s gaze sharpened slightly.

But it wasn’t.

Aria shook her head slowly.

“No,” she admitted. “Because I did something.”

She gestured toward the ground.

Faint traces of energy still lingered barely visible, like threads of silver mist woven into the earth.

Kael stepped closer immediately, his attention fully drawn.

He crouched, brushing his fingers lightly over the ground. His expression shifted focused, calculating.

“You fought back,” he said.

I didn’t mean to, Aria replied quickly. It just happened. I didn’t even think. It was like something inside me took over.

Kael looked up at her.

His golden eyes locked onto hers.

“You surprised them,” he said quietly.

Then, after a brief pause.

You surprised me.

Aria’s heart skipped.

You’re not afraid? she asked.

Kael rose slowly.

Of you? he repeated.

She nodded, her voice barely above a whisper.

I don’t understand what i did. What if I lose control? What if next time…Her breath hitched. What if I hurt someone?

Kael stepped closer.

Too close.

His presence wrapped around her strong, grounded, unshaken.

“Power is not your enemy,” he said. “Ignorance is.”

Her chest tightened.

I don’t know how to control it.

Then you learn.

His tone was calm but absolute.

Unbreakable.

Aria searched his face.

Why? she asked softly. Why are you helping me?

The question lingered between them.

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

His gaze studied her, intense and searching, as if he was trying to see something buried deep within her.

Finally.

Because you’re not ordinary, he said.

Her breath caught.

That doesn’t sound like a good thing.

A faint, almost amused exhale escaped him.

It depends on who you ask.

Silence fell again.

Aria’s thoughts spiraled.

Her pack had called her useless.

Wolfless.

A burden.

And yet.

This Alpha stood before her, looking at her like she was something else entirely.

Something dangerous.

Something rare.

“You can’t stay here, Kael said suddenly.

Aria blinked.

What?

The forest isn’t safe, he continued. The rogues won’t stop. Not after last night.

Her stomach tightened.

They will come back for me?

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Kael extended his hand toward her.

“Come with me.”

Aria stared at it.

Trust.

The word felt foreign now.

Heavy.

Her own pack had turned their backs on her.

Left her to die.

And now.

This man, this Alpha, was offering her a choice.

I don’t trust easily,” she said quietly.

Kael didn’t move his hand.

Then don’t trust easily, he replied.

Just trust me.

Her heart pounded violently in her chest.

It was reckless.

Dangerous.

But staying here?

That was a death sentence.

Slowly…hesitantly.

She placed her hand in his.

“I’ll come with you.”

His grip closed around hers.

Warm.

Firm.

Certain.

Good.

The journey through the forest was long and tense.

Aria stayed close behind him, forcing her tired body to keep up.

Every crack of a branch made her flinch.

Every shadow seemed alive.

But Kael never faltered.

He moved like he owned the forest.

“Stay close,” he said at one point.

I am, she muttered.

A faint hint of amusement touched his lips but he didn’t look back.

As they moved deeper, the forest began to change.

The trees grew thicker.

Older.

Marked.

Aria noticed the claw marks first.

Deep. Jagged.

Then the symbols carved into the bark.

Territory warnings.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Where are we? she asked.

Kael stopped.

Then turned to face her.

This, he said calmly, “is Shadowfang territory.”

Aria froze.

She had heard of them.

A powerful pack.

Feared.

Untouchable.

And you’re bringing me there? she asked.

“Yes.”

They won’t accept me.

Kael’s gaze didn’t waver.

They don’t have to.

Her breath caught.

Because i already have.

Something inside her shifted.

Something fragile.

Something she didn’t want to name.

When they reached the ridge, Aria stopped completely.

Below them stretched the Shadowfang territory.

Vast.

Alive.

Power pulsed through it like a living thing.

Wolves moved across the land some in human form, others shifting fluidly.

This wasn’t like her old pack.

This was something stronger.

Something sharper.

This is your home? she whispered.

“For now,” Kael said.

Then his voice hardened slightly.

But Shadowfang does not tolerate weakness.

Aria swallowed.

Then I don’t belong here.

Kael looked at her.

“No,” he said quietly.

You just haven’t proven that you do.

Later, inside a small wooden lodge.

Aria sat on the edge of a narrow cot.

Exhaustion pressed heavily against her.

Kael stood near the doorway, watching her silently.

You’ll stay here, he said. “Rest.”

She nodded weakly.

Thank you…

He didn’t respond.

Just watched.

Like he was trying to understand her.

Like she was something unfamiliar.

Aria lay back slowly.

Her body gave in almost instantly.

But just as her eyes began to close.

She felt it.

Again.

That energy.

Stronger.

Deeper.

Her eyes snapped open.

What?

Kael straightened immediately.

What is it?

Aria pushed herself upright, breathing unevenly.

I feel something.

His expression darkened.

Where?

She pressed her hand to her chest.

“Inside me.”

The air in the room shifted.

Tension filled the space.

Show me, Kael said.

I don’t know how!

“Try.”

Her heart pounded violently.

She closed her eyes.

Focused.

On the feeling.

On the pull beneath her skin.

And suddenly.

A surge of silver light exploded from her body.

The room shook violently.

Energy crackled through the air like lightning.

Kael stepped back instantly.

Aria gasped.

And collapsed.

The light vanished.

Silence crashed down.

Kael moved fast, catching her before she hit the ground.

“Aria.”

No response.

His jaw tightened.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

He stared down at her.

And then his expression shifted.

Because for a split second.

Just before the light disappeared.

He had seen it.

Not human.

Not wolf.

Something else.

Something ancient.

Something that should not exist.

His grip tightened unconsciously.

What are you? he whispered.

Outside, the wind rose suddenly, howling through the trees.

And far beyond Shadowfang territory.

Deep in the darkness.

Something awakened.

Watching.

Waiting.

Because whatever lived inside Aria…

Had just revealed itself.

And now…

It was no longer hidden.

Kael didn’t move.

For a moment, he simply stood there, holding her unconscious form in his arms, his golden eyes fixed on her face as if searching for answers that refused to come.

Aria’s breathing was steady.

Too steady.

Like nothing had happened.

But Kael knew better.

He had felt it.

That power.

Raw. Ancient. Unfamiliar.

And dangerously alive.

Slowly, he lowered her onto the cot, his movements unusually careful for someone of his strength. His gaze lingered on her for a second longer before he straightened.

Something about her presence unsettled him.

Not fear.

No Kael did not fear easily.

But this…

This was different.

A knock sounded at the door.

Sharp. Urgent.

Kael’s expression hardened instantly.

“Enter.”

The door creaked open, and one of his warriors stepped inside. His posture was tense, his eyes flicking briefly toward Aria before returning to Kael.

Alpha, he said. There’s been movement along the eastern border.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Rogues?

The warrior hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Explain.”

They’re not acting like rogues, the warrior said carefully. “

They’re organized. Watching. Waiting.

A low silence filled the room.

Kael glanced briefly at Aria again.

Then back at the warrior.

How many?

At least a dozen. Maybe more.

They haven’t crossed into our territory yet but they are close.

Too close.

Kael’s instincts sharpened instantly.

Double the patrol, he ordered. No one moves alone. And if they cross the border.

His voice dropped, dangerous.

They don’t leave alive.

“Yes, Alpha.”

The warrior turned to leave but hesitated at the door.

There’s something else.

Kael’s patience thinned.

What?

They’re asking for someone.

The room went still.

Kael’s eyes darkened.

Who?

The warrior swallowed.

“A girl.”

Silence.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

Kael’s gaze slowly shifted to Aria.

Still unconscious.

Still unaware.

But somehow.

At the center of everything.

What exactly did they say? Kael asked, his voice now dangerously calm.

The warrior stepped back slightly.

They said…‘Give us the girl who carries the light or we take the pack instead.’

A cold, lethal stillness settled over Kael.

The air in the room seemed to drop several degrees.

“Get out,” he said quietly.

The warrior didn’t hesitate this time.

The door shut behind him.

Silence returned.

But it was no longer peaceful.

Kael stood there for a long moment.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Then his gaze dropped back to Aria.

You just arrived, he murmured.

And already, the world is hunting you.

Aria stirred slightly.

A faint movement.

A soft breath.

Kael stilled.

Her fingers twitched.

Then.

Her eyes snapped open.

A sharp gasp tore from her lungs as she sat upright suddenly.

“Don’t!” she cried out.

Kael moved instantly, steadying her before she could fall.

You’re safe.

Her breathing was wild, uneven.

Her eyes darted around the room, unfocused at first.

Then locked onto him.

“Kael…”

Her voice shook.

What did you see? he asked immediately.

She froze.

Her expression shifted.

Fear.

Real fear.

I…she hesitated. “I saw something.”

His gaze sharpened.

What?

Aria’s hands trembled slightly as she pressed them against her chest again.

It wasn’t a dream, she whispered. “It felt real.”

Tell me.

She shook her head slowly, like she didn’t fully understand it herself.

There was darkness. Not normal darkness. It felt alive.

Kael didn’t interrupt.

I was standing in the middle of it, she continued. And there were voices whispering.

Her breathing quickened again.

They were calling me.

A dangerous silence filled the room.

What were they saying? Kael asked.

Her lips parted slightly.

Then she whispered.

She has awakened.

Kael’s entire body went still.

Aria’s eyes lifted to meet his.

And then i saw something else.

His voice dropped.

What?

Her voice trembled.

“Eyes.”

A pause.

“Red.”

The word hung in the air like a warning.

Watching me.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

Where?

I don’t know, she admitted. But it didn’t feel far. It felt like…

She hesitated.

Like it could see me.

Silence.

Heavy and suffocating.

Kael stepped back slightly, running a hand through his hair as his thoughts began to align.

Rogues at the border.

Organized.

Watching.

Asking for a girl.

And now.

This.

He looked back at her.

You’re not leaving this territory, he said firmly.

Aria blinked.

What?

Not alone. Not without protection.

Her chest tightened.

You think they’re here for me?

I know they are.

The certainty in his voice sent a chill through her.

But why? she asked. “I don’t even know what i am!”

Kael held her gaze.

That’s exactly why.

The words hit harder than she expected.

Fear crept in again.

Deeper this time.

More real.

What if I’m dangerous? she whispered.

Kael didn’t hesitate.

Then we make sure you’re dangerous to the right people.

Her breath caught.

There was no fear in his voice.

No doubt.

Just strategy.

Control.

Power.

Aria stared at him.

At the Alpha who should have rejected her.

Who should have turned her away like everyone else.

But instead.

He was standing here.

Choosing to protect her.

Even when it meant risking everything.

Her voice softened.

Why are you doing this?

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he stepped closer again.

Close enough that she could feel the heat of his presence.

Because whatever you are, he said quietly, you’re not weak.

Her heart skipped.

And i don’t abandon strength when I see it.

Something shifted between them.

Unspoken.

Dangerous.

And far more powerful than either of them expected.

But before Aria could respond.

A distant howl cut through the air.

Sharp.

Aggressive.

Not one.

Many.

Both of them froze.

Kael’s expression turned instantly cold.

That’s the eastern border.

Aria’s heart dropped.

They’re here.

Kael moved toward the door, his entire presence shifting into something lethal.

“Stay inside,” he ordered.

But…

“Aria.”

His voice stopped her.

Firm.

Commanding.

Final.

“Do not leave this room.”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

He stepped outside.

And the moment the door closed behind him.

Aria felt it again.

That energy.

Stronger than before.

It pulsed through her veins.

Calling.

Pulling.

Her breath caught.

“No”

But her body didn’t listen.

Slowly.

She stood.

Her eyes drifted toward the door.

Toward the howls.

Toward the danger.

Toward something else.

Something deeper.

Something inside her that was beginning to wake.

Her fingers curled slightly.

And this time.

When the silver light flickered beneath her skin…

It didn’t fade.

It spread.

And outside.

The howls suddenly stopped.

As if something far more terrifying had just made itself known.

  • THE WOLFLESS LUNA   CHAPTER FIVE: ALONE IN THE DARK FOREST

The forest seemed endless. Shadows stretched between ancient trees, their gnarled roots twisting like serpents across the forest floor. Aria Nightshade stumbled over one such root, her breath coming in short, sharp bursts. The sun had long since disappeared, leaving the world bathed in darkness, pierced only by the occasional silver of the moon. For the first time since being cast out of the Silvercrest Pack, she was truly alone. Her pack’s rejection echoed in her mind with every step. She remembered the elders’ cold eyes, the whispers of the warriors, and the way her parents’ death had been twisted into evidence of her supposed weakness. She had begged, she had pleaded, she had even tried to hide the truth of her wolfless condition but nothing had spared her from exile. Now the forest was all she had, and it seemed determined to remind her of her fragility.Aria’s fingers traced the rough bark of a tree as she leaned against it, trying to gather strength. The blood moon had left its

The night air was cold and sharp, slicing through Aria’s skin like invisible claws. Her bare feet pressed against the rough forest floor, each step sending splinters of pain up her legs. The moon hung low, swollen and red. A Blood Moon that her pack had always treated with reverence and fear. Tonight, though it felt like a warning, It seemed to illuminate the isolation that now defined her life. She was no longer part of the Silvercrest Pack. She had been cast out, thrown into the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on her back and the weight of shame on her shoulders.Aria stumbled over a tree root, her heart hammering, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She wanted to cry, to collapse, to scream at the injustice of it all but she didn’t. She couldn’t…She had learned long ago that showing weakness in front of Silvercrest’s warriors only invited ridicule. Now, in the dark, there was no one to watch her, but the fear lingered anyway. Her wolf…what everyone called her “wolfless defe
