~LEONARD

Driving into this compound made the hairs on my body stand, sharpening every instinct in me.

We may share the same name, but these people are wolves in sheep's clothing. I would rather walk into a den of wolves.

Whatever that old geezer had to say, he better be quick. They may have wanted Adrian to take the position, but my achievements were making that increasingly difficult.

I stepped out of my car, and scanned the building one last time as I adjusted my cufflinks, before walking towards the entrance.

I walked straight to the dining area. It was called a dinner meeting but there wasn't actually going to be much eating.

Just green snakes lying in the green grass to jump on anyone who lets his or her guard down.

As punctual as I am, I could not beat Grandpa, Leonhart Montgomery, to any event. He sat at the head of the table with his low gaze that could have probably seen me from the entrance.

I didn't greet him as usual and I sat on the other end of the table. If he was King of the jungle, I was the predator creating tunnels right under him.

“You were the last person I expected to see today. You really want this position?” His aged but authoritative voice grated on my ears.

“And you really want to die with it.” I responded, still watching him.

He immediately chuckled.

“You know, I would never say this, but speaking with you is the only fun I have going on.” He drank from his bottle of water.

“And that's supposed to make me happy, why?”

“I don't care how it makes you feel. I just hope you know how to use that tongue when I'm not its opponent.”

My eyes lingered on him for a while. I never understood him, he never gave his own sons the opportunity to get the company, but he was enjoying having his grandsons go head to head.

My dad struggled to build the Marine division, but they never gave him what he wanted, Grandpa's approval. Not even at his funeral.

I didn't want his approval. To hell with it. I only wanted to find out what happened to my dad that night, and I intended to find out.

Laughter echoed behind me. Adrian and our cousin, Francesca had arrived, displaying a united front while biting themselves at the back. At least one of them was.

“Hey Grandpa.” Francesca announced, a devious smile plastered on her face. Then turned to me. “Hello, Leo.”

“Hello Grandpa.” Adrian simply said. He didn't spare me a glance. Not like I cared, he was a spoiled child.

“Welcome, where is your father, Adrian?” Grandpa asked, looking straight at him.

“H-he is on his way. Should I call him?” Adrian said, his voice slightly shaking as he struggled to keep a straight face.

And this was the man of the company. Can they be done already?

“Sorry, I'm late. Business. Hello dad. Francesca. Son.” Adrian's father, Alfred, finally showed up running in.

Leonhart would have started this meeting already, but he waited. I can't wait to hear what he wants to say.

“It's time I decided who is worthy of the Group.” Leonhart said and suddenly the dining area grew with enthusiasm.

“There is really no need to drag this out. Everyone knows I'm next in line.” Adrian said, drawing strength from the presence of Alfred.

“Indeed,” Francesca said, still with that stupid smile. “There is a difference between being next in line and,” she looked towards me, “fighting for it.”

“Exactly Francesca. And Adrian, what makes you think you're qualified?” Leonhart asked him.

“I'm the obvious choice. I've been groomed for this position my entire life. I've managed several divisions under my father's supervision, and the company's profits have increased every year.” Adrian answered.

“And you, Leonard?” I stared at him as he called my name.

“Leonhart,” I started and everyone looked at me like I was insane. “I don't think I need to answer that question. I started a whole division on my own. From my father's groundworks. I don't think I need to fight for this.”

“Leonhart? Don't you have respect for your elders?!” Alfred said, his voice rising with each word.

“Alfred, keep it down.” Leonhart said, motioning him to calm down. “You are confident. I must say, it's not an easy feat, but that doesn't make you qualified.”

“What exactly are your qualification? The highest amount of betrayal? The best liar?”

Leonhart began laughing at my words.

“You always have a way to make me laugh. If you keep touching old wounds, they won't heal.”

“I haven't found the right medication. And trust me, when I do. It won't be a clean treatment.” I said, looking at him, dead in the eyes.

Alfred scoffed, Francesca drank her wine and Adrian leaned on his chair, eyes focused on Leonhart.

“Can we forget the man with Daddy issues and carry on the discussion?” Adrian asked.

I curled my hand into a fist. Oh, I would love him to say that to my face.

“Thank you Adrian. As I was saying, I won't use your past to judge you. But from here on out, I don't need more scandals to my name.” Leonhart continued.

“Yes, please respect each other's wives. We are a respectable family.” Francesca chimed in, obviously trying to aim at me.

“Women of the family should also learn to close deals with mouths and actions, not their pussy.” I retorted, sitting straight as I was losing my patience.

“How dare-”

“Enough! Francesca, never interrupt me again. And you Leonard, never speak that way about your sister again.” Leonhart shouted.

Sister my ass. She was the family slut, a snake. I would kill her first if given the opportunity.

“The next president of Montgomery Holdings will not be chosen by blood.” The entire table froze.

That was the fairest thing I had heard all my life. If it was by blood, I stood no chance, Adrian was next.

“It would be evaluated by merit.” Leonhart ended.

AURORA’S POV“What the heck is this, Aurora?...” Rachel's voice was booming in the living room. So much for keeping this information a secret from her. I wasn't surprised when I walked in on her looking with her hands on her waist with a million questions. News about the male Montgomerys spread quicker than wildfire. But I was still dazed from the events that took place. Max just informed me that I wasn't liked in the department. And he….he. I hope he knew what he was doing. “Aurora! Don't go deaf on me.” Rachel's voice suddenly echoed in my ears. “I'm sorry. What do you need?” I looked up at her. “This post’s been trending. Yes most people didn't get your face but it is you, right?” She brought the phone closer to me. I grabbed the phone from her and saw that my face was hidden. I scrolled up and a few scrolls later, I realized that my face didn't really show up but in photos and videos. “How can you tell that is me?” I smiled at her, trying to run away from this conversati

AURORA’S POVThe city’s nightlife was awakening as I sat at my desk the night after the big event. It had become the talk of the town and social media. Bloggers had begun choosing who they thought would be good fits for the Montgomery grandsons. Actresses, celebrities, the daughters of tycoons. It was a whole era. And I was thinking about whether to accept the arrangement from a family I had sworn to run away from. I had made a list of pros and cons and surprisingly, I hadn't listed a single pro. What would people say about me? From one Montgomery son to another. A golddigger. I had sent back the outfit and everything he sent to me for the event, except the perfume. Rachel had claimed it “legally”. I opened his DM to check on our texts. LEONARD: [IS THIS YOUR REPLY] With an attachment photo of the outfit. ME: [NOT YET. I HAD INTENDED ON RETURNING THEM]LEONARD: [ARE YOU DONE THINKING?]I hadn't replied to that question. What should I do? I didn't want to discuss it with Rach

LEONARD’S POV“Wait Aurora! Calm down. You are misunderstanding the situation.” She increased her pace as I hurried behind her. I sighed, “Wait!”She finally halted, just outside the building. “How could you? To think I was starting to respect you, and you pull a move this low. With your cousin’s ex-wife?” She folded her arms under her chest as I caught up to her. “Can you calmly listen to me?”“No.”“Great. Walk with me.” I pointed her to the garden, and she reluctantly followed my gesture. As we entered the garden, the sweet honey and vanilla scent filled my nose and reminded me of why I loved this spot during this stupid event. “Hmm. What’s that scent? I haven’t been to this part of the garden before.” She bent over to smell the flowers. “Honey mixed with vanilla. I didn’t know we had the night phlox here.”“This place is truly enchanting when you focus on the natural part of it and not the man-made part.” I sat on the bench and caught sight of her gawking at me like she had s

~LEONARDI followed her line of sight and of course, It had to be that spoiled brat. She walked in here looking this… this good, and her breath is hitching because of that half-baked human. “Come let me introduce you to some of the investors.” I pulled her away from the distraction. “Mr. Dubois.” I stretched out my hand for a hand shake. He quickly grabbed it. “Leonard. How are you? I haven't seen you in a while.” “I'm doing great. I see you're enjoying yourself.” “I am definitely. Who is this beauty?” He picked Aurora’s hand to kiss it. I couldn't stand this man outside business meetings. One look at Aurora’s face and it was visible, she didn't want his lips near her body. “Mr. Dubois.” I took Aurora’s hand off his, gently. “She is our new CyberSecurity officer.” “Oh, really. I might need her at my company for tighter protection.”“How much drink have you had sir?” I turned towards Aurora as she suddenly spoke. “I don't think you should be allowed to open your mouth when you

~AURORAMy eyes fluttered open as my alarm rang loudly. I yawned and stretched like I had a wonderful night. It was actually the opposite. I couldn't sleep. My eyes were closed but my brain kept reminding me of what today was. The birthday event. It was always huge and for the past five years, I had helped in organizing it. I got up, slipped my feet into my slippers and opened the window. I shuddered a bit as the cold air hit my skin. The sky was dark. But the roads had a mix of red, yellow and gold. This year I was a plus one. I chuckled at myself.I didn't want any stupid memories of joy and laughter. So I walked out of my room, beelined to the bathroom to brush and wash my face. I looked at my reflection. “What a disaster.” My hair was all tangled up. I don't know the last time I actually took care of my hair or my skin properly. As I brushed, I touched my hair. I was once very proud of it. I used to be a beautiful redhead. But now I was working my ass off, trying to gather

~AURORARegret washed over me as I stared at the text I had just sent. I had just accepted his invitation to be his plus one. Oh…I gave in too soon. I could have waited a day or so. LEONARD: [SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS.] My address? What did he want it for? I was tired of him encroaching my thoughts. I typed it and sent it to him. Rachel had fallen asleep on the couch while watching the movie. I shook my head, tapped her and whispered. “Let's go to bed.”“Nooooo.” She stretched and groaned. “Get up you sack of food.” And she groaned louder. ~~~“You have no idea, Rory. Trust me.” Rachel sliced the tomatoes as I laughed in the living room, occasionally glancing at my laptop. It was the weekend. She had just finished her power nap and was starvingly complaining about work. Then the doorbell rang. We both glanced at each other. “Are you expecting someone?” She asked and I glared at her. As if anyone cares about me that much. “Let me get it.” I stretched as I got up and walked to the
