Three hours before her sister's wedding. Amelia Carter found the note.

It was tucked beneath a jewelry box on Olivia’s vanity, written in her sister’s unmistakable slanted scrawl, the ink slightly smeared as though she'd been crying when she wrote it.

I'm sorry. I can't marry him. Please don't look for me.

Amelia read it three times before her legs gave out and she sat down hard on the edge of the bed, the note trembling in her hand.

“Olivia?” she called, already knowing there would be no answer. The bathroom door stood open. The closet had been rifled through, hangers empty where a single bag’s worth of clothes should have been. On the dresser, Olivia’s phone sat powered off, deliberately left behind.

Her sister hadn't just gotten cold feet.

She'd vanished.

Downstairs, the house was already a machine in motion, florists arguing over centerpieces, a string quartet turning in the ballroom, caterers ferrying trays past guests who’d begun arriving an hour early because parking near the estate was already a nightmare. Two hundred of the country's most powerful people were settling into white chairs in the garden, and none of them knew yet that the bride they’d come to see was gone.

Amelia burst into her grandmother's study without knocking, the note still clutched in her fist.

“Grandma. Olivia’s gone. She left a note, she…”

“I know.”

Margaret Carter didn't look up from the papers on her desk. She said it the way other people confirmed the weather.

“Amelia stared at her. “You know? Since when?”

“Since twenty minutes ago, when housekeeping found her window unpatched.” Margaret finally lifted her eyes, and there was nothing in them that resembled panic. “Which gives us very little time to decide what happens next.”

“There's no wedding being called off.” Margaret rose from her chair, smoothing the front of her jacket with the precision of a woman who had never once in her life allowed a crisis to show on her face. “Do you have any idea what happens to this family if that merger collapses in front of every investor who matters? We lose this house. We lose everything your grandfather built. Kingston Holdings walks away, and so does every company that’s been waiting to see which way this deal goes.”

“That's not my problem to fix.”

“It is now.”

The words landed like a slap. Amelia took a step back. “What are you talking about?”

Margaret crossed the room and, before Amelia understood what was happening, lifted the garment bag hanging on the back of the study door…Olivia’s wedding gown, ivory silk, catching the afternoon light.

“You're roughly the same size. The seamstress can pin it in twenty minutes.”

“You cannot be serious.”

“I have never been more serious in my life.” Margaret's voice didn't rise. It didn't need to. “You will put on that dress, you will walk down the aisle, and you will marry Adrian Kingston in your sister’s place, because the alternative is watching everything this family has left burn to the ground in front of five hundred witnesses.”

“I’m not Olivia.”

“No one needs you to be her.” Margaret's eyes were merciless. “They need to believe it for exactly as long as it takes to sign a marriage certificate. After that, it's Adrian’s problem, not yours.”

Amelia’s mind raved through every version of refusal, and found, to her horror, that none of them held up against the sheer velocity of what was already happening around her…a wedding planner already knocking, asking if the bride was ready; a photographer testing his flesh outside the door; the quartet beginning something soft and ceremonial two floors below.

“He’ll know,” Amelia said quietly. “The second I walk down that aisle, he’ll know I’m not her.”

“Then let that be his decision to make,” Margaret said, already reaching for his veil. “Not yours.”

Forty minutes later, Amelia stood at the top of the aisle in her sister’s gown, her sister’s veil obscuring just enough of her face to buy a few precious seconds of doubt, her hand ice cold around a bouquet of white roses that weren't hers to carry.

Five hundred faces towards her.

And at the end of the aisle, standing where her sister was supposed to be marrying a stranger, Adrian Kingston watched her walk towards him with an expression she couldn't read..until she was close enough to see it clearly.

Not confusion.

Not the polite blackness of a groom seeing his bride for the first time that day.

He knew. She could see it settle into his features the way a verdict set over a courtroom. Amelia’s step faltered. For one suspended second, she was certain he would stop the ceremony right there, expose her in front of everyone, and end the Carter family’s last chance at survival in a single sentence.

He didn't.

Adrain held out his hand, steady and sure, and said the only thing that mattered in that moment, low enough for no one but her to hear.

“Keep walking.”

Amelia’s heart hammered against her ribs as she placed her hand on his, the vows beginning before she’d even had time to process what she’d just agreed to.

She had no idea, standing there in her sister’s dress, exchanging rings with a man who already knew the truth but married her anyway, that the real question wasn't why he’d let the wedding proceed.

It was what he already knew about where Olivia had gone and why he needed the world to believe, for now, that nothing at all was wrong.

Behind them, the officiant's voice carried out over the garden, pronouncing them husband and wife to a wave of applause Amelia barely heard over the roar of her own pulse. Somewhere behind the white chairs and the champagne already being poured, her sister was out there running from something, or someone, terrifying enough to make her leave everything behind without a word.

And Amelia had just married the one man who might actually know why.

“We can't go to the mill,” Adrian said. “It's a trap.”“It's my sister's life.”“It's both.” He crossed into the study, close enough now that Amelia could see the exhaustion carved into every line of his face. “If we walk in blind, we lose everything. The folder, Olivia, you. Whoever sent that message doesn't want a negotiation, Amelia. They want everyone who knows the truth in one place.”“So what do we do? Nothing? Just let the deadline pass and hope for the best?”“No.” His voice dropped, low and certain. “We go in smart. We go in together.”Amelia looked at him for a long moment, searching his face for the cold, careful stranger who'd married her in her sister’s place three weeks ago. She couldn't find him anymore. Something had shifted since the car, since the hallway, since the message glowing accusingly on her phone screen. “Why does this matter so much to you?” she asked quietly. “Olivia isn't your wife. I am. This isn't your family blood on the line.”Adrian was quiet for a

“Say that again.”Amelia’s voice came out steadier than she felt. Adrian stood across the study, the black security card still pinched between two fingers, turning it over as though a second look might change what was printed on it. “Kingston Holdings private security,” he said again, quieter this time. “That's not a card anyone outside the company could have. Which means whoever ran you off the road tonight didn't just work for someone dangerous. They work for me.”Amelia sank into the chair by the desk, the adrenaline of the crash finally draining out of her and leaving something colder behind. “Your father.”“Maybe.” Adrian set the card down carefully, as if it might still be dangerous to hold. “Or someone closer than my father. Someone with enough access to pull a security team without him ever signing off on it.”Neither of them said the word out loud, but it hung in the room anyway. A sound came from the hallway. Soft. A voice, low, careful not to carry. Amelia held up a hand

Amelia didn't look back as she walked through the front doors of the Carter house. Behind her stood the house she'd grown up in, the place that had once felt like home. Today, it felt like a place she couldn't wait to escape. “Mrs Kingston.” the driver said as she entered. They left the Carter estate. “Turn here,” Amelia said. “Faster.”The driver didn't turn fast enough. Headlights filled the back window. Too close and too fast. “Someone’s behind us,” Amelia said.“I see them,” the driver said, his knuckles already white on the wheel. The car slammed into the back bumper. Amelia’s head hit the seat. “Hold on!”Another hit. The car spun, the engine dead and smoke curling from the hood. Her phone had flown from her lap somewhere into the footwell. Then she saw him. A figure stepped out of the car that had rammed them, unhurried, black jacket, a ski mask pulled low over his face, closing the distance toward her window with the calm of someone who had done this before and expect

The Carter estate looked smaller than Amelia remembered, though she knew it wasn't the house that had changed. She hadn't been back since the wedding. Standing in the entryway now, suitcase-less, married, wearing a stranger’s last name, she felt like a guest in the only one she'd ever actually known. The staff who remained, fewer than they used to be, the Kingston merger money not having arrived yet to save what was left, greeted her with the same startled uncertainty as everyone at Kingston Villa. Not Mrs Kingston and not Amelia either. Something in between that no one has a name for yet. She found her grandmother in the study, exactly where she always was, exactly as composed as she'd been the morning she'd handed Amelia a wedding gown and called it a solution. “I need to see Olivia’s room,” Amelia said, without preamble. Margaret didn't look up from her correspondence. “Whatever for?”“Because you know something you haven't told me, and I am done waiting for you to decide when

  • THE WRONG BRIDE    CHAPTER 6

Amelia didn't sleep. She sat curled in the window seat of the study, exactly where Adrian had left her, watching the empty driveway long after the headlights had gone still and the front doors had swallowed both men whole. An hour had already passed. The house held its breath around her, servants nowhere in sight, as though the entire Villa had been trained to disappear the moment a Kingston conversation required privacy. It was well past midnight when Adrian finally returned, his tie loosened, his composure fraying at the edges in a way she hadn't seen from him before, not even the night of the wedding. “What did he want?” Amelia asked, rising from the window seat. Adrian didn't answer right away. He crossed to the drink cart in the corner, poured two fingers of something amber, and drank half of it before he spoke. “He knows.”“Know what?” She asked. “About my mother and the questions I've been asking. “My father doesn't guess, Amelia. He confirms.”“What did he say?”“He offe

The first page was a photograph. Amelia recognized the setting before she recognized the people in it, the same garden she'd walked through that morning, the same greenhouse still standing, though decades younger in the picture. Two men stand in front of it, arms around each other’s shoulders in the easy way of old friends closing a deal. She knew one of them instantly. A young version of her grandfather, dark-haired. Smiling in a way she’d never once seen him smile in her real life. The other man she’d never met, but the resemblance was unmistakable. “Your father,” she said quietly. “Twenty-six years ago,” Adrian confirmed. “A year before I was born. Two years before my mother died.” Amelia turned the photograph over. On the back, in faded pencil: Kingston-Carter Holdings…. The beginning. “This is when the companies first merged,” she said slowly. “Not through your marriage to Olivia. Through something before that.” “That's what I thought too.” Adrian nodded toward th
