Charlotte

She starts to leave, then pauses and looks back at me.

"Think about what I said, Charlotte. We don't have to like each other. We just have to want the same thing." She glances at my mother. "It was nice meeting you, Mrs. Hayes."

After she leaves, Mom slides into the chair Elena just vacated, watching through the window as the woman disappears down the street.

"Well," Mom says finally. "That was certainly something."

I'm still holding Elena's business card, turning it over in my fingers.

"Charlotte?" Mom's voice pulls me back. "You okay?"

"Yeah. Just... processing."

"Want to tell me what that was about? Because it looked intense."

When I finish, she's quiet for a long moment.

"What do you think?" I ask.

Charlotte But my hand finds Rhys's under the table, and my grip is so tight I can feel my nails digging into his palm.James doesn't look convinced, but he nods. "Alright. Just... stay focused. Don't let them rattle you. That's what they want.""We won't," I say.I force myself to look away from Elena, to focus on the papers in front of me. My heart is pounding so hard I can feel it in my throat, but my hands are steady as I open my folder. The rage that floods through me is so intense it's almost cleansing. It burns away the lingering hurt, the confusion, the careful distance I've been maintaining. She played me. Played us both. And now she's sitting over there like she's won something."All rise."The bailiff's voice cuts through my thoughts. I stand with everyone else, watching as Judge Katherine Morrison enters, a woman in her sixties with steel-gray hair and an expression that tolerates no nonsense."You may be seated."The rustling of bodies settling back into chairs fills the

RhysMonday morning arrives with grey skies and a biting wind.Charlotte is up before me, already dressed in a black suit. "You ready?" I ask, adjusting my tie in the mirror."As ready as I'll ever be." She checks her reflection one last time. The courthouse is swarmed with reporters when we arrive. Cameras flash. Voices shout questions."Mr. Van Allen! Is it true Kevin Anders tried to have your girlfriend killed?""Charlotte! How does it feel facing your ex-husband in court?""Will you be seeking damages beyond the criminal charges?"Our security team creates a path through the chaos. Charlotte keeps her head down, her hand tight in mine.We don't answer any of them.Inside the courthouse, the atmosphere is quieter but no less tense. People in expensive suits hurry past, clutching briefcases and folders. We're walking toward the courtroom when I see them.Dorathy Anders, dressed in black like she's attending a funeral, her face pinched and angry. And beside her, Tara, Kevin's wife,

Rhys"You don't have to rush off," Charlotte protests, but there's a hint of relief in her voice."I know, sweetheart. But I've been here all day, and you two probably want some time together." Greta pulls Charlotte into a hug, whispering something I can't hear. Then she turns to me. "Take care of my girl, Rhys.""Always," I promise. She studies me for a moment longer than necessary, as if trying to read what happened between the office and here. Then she nods, kisses Charlotte's cheek, and gathers her things.Charlotte walks her to the door. I watch them exchange a few more quiet words before Greta leaves, throwing one last concerned glance over her shoulder. The door closes.Charlotte stands there for a moment, her hand still on the doorknob, her back to me."Charlotte...""I'm going upstairs." Her voice is steady. Too steady. "I need to change out of these clothes."She doesn't wait for a response. Just walks past me and heads up the stairs, her footsteps measured and careful.I fo

RhysThe door clicks shut behind Elena, and the silence that follows feels like a held breath.Charlotte is still standing by my desk, that pleasant smile fixed on her face like a mask. But I know her. I've learned to read every micro-expression, every shift in her posture. And right now, she's a bomb with the timer ticking down."Charlotte...""Your coffee's getting cold." She gestures to the cup she brought. "You should drink it while it's hot."I don't care about the coffee." I move closer to her, but she takes a small step back. Subtle. Almost imperceptible. "That wasn't what it looked like.""What did it look like?" Her voice is so calm it makes my chest tighten."Elena was, she came by unannounced. Said she had questions about the evidence for Kevin's trial." The words tumble out too fast. "She was leaning over the desk, and I was about to tell her to back off when you walked in.""Okay.""Okay?" I search her face for anger, for hurt, for anything. But she's giving me nothing. "

Charlotte "You saved me.""I should have been there sooner. Should have gone with you. Should have...""Stop." I reach over with my free hand and take his. "You couldn't have known. Kevin is insane. Desperate. He dressed as a server just to get close to me."I lean my head on his shoulder, exhausted. "I just want this to be over. The trial, Kevin, all of it.""Soon. It'll be over soon." He presses a kiss to the top of my head. "And then he'll rot in prison for the rest of his life."We sit like that for a long time, the ice pack slowly melting against my throat, Rhys's blood drying on his knuckles.Eventually, he helps me change into pajamas and tucks me into bed like I'm something precious and breakable."Get some sleep," he murmurs. "I'll be right here.""You should clean your hands. They're going to get infected.""In a minute. Right now, I just need to make sure you're okay."I drift off to the sound of his breathing, steady and sure beside me.------------------The next morning

  • THE WRONG BROTHER    Chapter 110

Charlotte Blood sprays across the white wall, across Rhys's shirt, across his knuckles.Kevin tries to fight back, throwing a wild punch that Rhys dodges easily. Another punch to Kevin's stomach. Kevin doubles over, gasping."Rhys..." I try to speak, but my voice comes out as a hoarse whisper. He doesn't hear me. Or maybe he does and doesn't care. He grabs Kevin by the collar and slams him against the wall again, his fist connecting with Kevin's face with a sickening crunch.Kevin's nose breaks. Blood pours down his face."You touched her!" Each word is punctuated by another hit. "You put your hands on her! You tried to kill her!"Kevin tries to stand, tries to push Rhys away, but his legs give out. He slumps against the wall, sliding down to the floor, leaving a smear of blood on the pristine white paint."Rhys, stop!" I finally manage to get the words out, my throat burning. "Please!"But he's not listening. He hauls Kevin up by his shirt and hits him again. Kevin's head snaps back
