“Liberty!” Madeline’s voice rings out. Before I can turn around to greet her she hugs me.

“Martin and I were worried about you. You just weren’t here in the morning! Where did you go?”

"Liberty was concerned about Mavericks' mission and came to me to voice her concerns and to see if we could come up with a mitigating measure. I decided to come back here with Liberty to keep her company," York answers with a half truth for me.

I nod confirming his words, “Thank you Beta heir York, have a safe journey home,” I stammer, as I fight my tears.

York smiles at me, but I can see concern in his eyes. Does he believe me? Or is he just worried about Maverick?

When York is out of hearing range Madeline and Martin start their cross examination on my whereabouts. I tell them about my dream and that I went to the castle in the hope that they would send extra men out to help them.

Their eyes betray their genuine pity for me. The feeling of truly being believed and loved breaks the dam. I break dow

Liberty povSummer break has started. Madeline and I said goodbye to Martin who will be returning to his own pack. Madeline and I travelled in silence, each in our own thoughts. I was thinking about how I would get through the summer break. She was thinking about Martin. I’m curious why Martin and Madeline have decided to not accept each other as chosen mates. They just belong together. I can’t imagine one of them finding their fated mate. It would leave the other heartbroken.I would have gladly given up my fated mate to be with Maverick. But then again that’s easy for me to say as a part of the pull between me and Maverick can be explained as us likely being mates. Thinking of Maverick makes me smile and cry at the same time. I cherish the memories we made together in the short time we had and mourn all of the things we will never get to experience together. “What are we going to do this summer?” I ask Madeline in an attempt to stop thinking about Maverick.“Train, run, sun bathe,

Liberty povEverything seems surreal. Life for everyone around me seems to move one while I stand still. Frozen in time. Everything is difficult, it’s as if I’m walking though loose beach sand while everyone else seems to be traveling over nice smooth paved roads. Naveah is quiet. Mourning the loss of Maverick and Gunner in a far corner of my mind. On the fourth day of mourning I went to the administration to ask if I could have the spare key to Mavericks room. I need to be in his presence one last time. As I’m just his girlfriend and nothing official I presume that his father will have his room cleaned out shortly after the mourning period. I want to take some of his clothes and maybe something else to remember him by. I doubt that his father will notice if I take a couple of shirts. I hope I can find something that I can remember him by that’s not something they will miss. Something that will not wear down over time. When I enter the administration Mrs. Howard spots me and comes

Liberty povI feel like an empty husk Maverick has only been gone for two days. As much as I want to believe that Maverick will return I can’t. Naveah is of no help either. She too feels gloomy and overwhelmed with a sense of dread. Madeline and Martin do their best to help me get through the day. In class I’m distracted and during dinner I just move food about on my plate. Madeline ends up feeding me as Martin watches me with great concern. I know he will ask questions. He’s not one to quietly watch me run myself into the ground. I just hope I can somehow give him answers that aren’t too far from the truth. All days come to an end and so does this day. Before I go to bed I leave my window cracked open so that if Maverick returns he can easily enter my room. I know it’s ridiculous, he’s only just left. Even if the mission was a success he couldn’t be back already. I find myself in an unfamiliar forest. I hear voices talking and I quietly make my way over to them, making sure I sta

Rover povA cold splash of water wakes me up. I try to open my eyes but my right eye refuses service. The vision in my left eye is blurry and lacks colour. The bitter taste of wolfsbane lingers in my mouth. That explains why my right eye won’t open yet. My head throbs. I try to move, the movement opens a dam of memories to break. The way Maverick, Peter, Harold, Henry and I were quickly separated from the other warriors by rogues who just forced themselves between us. We tried to get to Maverick even though we knew we were outnumbered. The beating we received for trying. I can’t remember how many fists pounded on my body. How many claws dug into my flesh or how many teeth tore into me.When I came round the first time I saw Maverick tied face down to four stakes in the ground. Multiple rogues with silverlaced whips of all kinds were raining lashes down on him. At first he screamed, then the dreams became groans and then he was silent. Even in silence his body jerked on impact of a l

Maverick pov Grumbling, the men exit their rooms. Fully dressed with their backpacks on they assemble in front of the barracks. I catch myself scrutinising everyone one of them. ‘Would you betray me and for who?’ Is the question I ask each one of them in silence. Asked out loud none of them would admit that they have or will betray me. Let alone tell me who they are loyal to. Standing in line they watch me, waiting for the sign to either shift and run or march in human form. Shifting would make us faster and I think that would benefit us as then the rogues would have less time to organise a trap or attack. The distrust and insecurity make me anxious and indecisive. Something I’ve never been before. “March!” I give the sign. I turn and start the march to the borders of the Kingdom. Silently we make our way through the forest where only a few weeks ago academy students lost their lives to the rabid rogues we are now setting out to extinguish. After an uneventful day walk we make ca
