The morning started earlier than usual for Alejandro. He was already at his desk by seven, holding a fresh cup of black coffee. The city was barely awake outside his window. The office was quiet, just the way he liked it.

He leaned back in his chair, staring at the folder on his desk. It wasn’t anything urgent. It was just basically routine updates from the downtown project team, but his thoughts weren’t on construction timelines or budget sheets.

His mind kept circling back to the gallery, to Corte Notturna, and to Sofia Winston.

He hadn’t expected to be surprised by her, not really. She had played her cards well, timing the delivery, arranging the setting, keeping her tone balanced between casual and calculated. He respected that.

What unsettled him a little was how much she had read him. She knew exactly what that painting meant. She hadn’t flaunted it or forced his hand. She had simply offered him the chance to show up and see it for himself, and he did show up.

The old chapel stood quietly at the edge of the cemetery. Its weathered stone walls bore witness to Alfonso Meraz's funeral. He was a man who had brought peace to rival families in the city during a time of fragile balance. He hadn't been a boss himself, but his influence had kept blood off the streets more than once. His passing had drawn a complicated crowd. Men in black suits arrived in silence. Some came out of respect, others came out of strategy.Don Alessandro Hernandez sat in the back row, with his hat in his lap. It was a gesture of old-school reverence. He watched the proceedings with the stillness of a predator. At his late fifties, he moved slowly, but no one doubted that his mind was sharp. One of his men stood quietly behind him, with his hands folded, and his eyes sweeping the room.A few pews to the left and two rows ahead sat Don Ricardo Lorca. He was equally still, equally composed. The last time they had shared a room had been years ago, and even then, words between

Alejandro arrived at exactly noon. The car ride had been quiet, as his mind was focused. As he stepped out onto the walkway leading to the private gallery attached to Sofia Winston's residence, he straightened his jacket and adjusted his cufflinks. He wasn’t here for small talk. The door opened before he could knock. Her assistant greeted him with a polite nod and stepped aside, letting him into a softly lit foyer that led into the gallery room. Sofia was already waiting inside."Mr. Hernandez," she said simply, with a smooth tone."Ms. Winston," he replied with a nod.The gallery space was understated but curated with intention. The lighting was warm, the floors were polished, and a few select pieces hung along the walls, but one stood out immediately. "Corte Notturna." It was place at the center, set to draw attention, it dominated the room.Alejandro took a step closer, saying nothing. He stared at the painting. His gaze scanned the lines, the colors, the texture he had committed

The morning sun gently shone through Sofia Winston’s tall apartment windows, lighting up the room, but Sofia wasn't paying attention to the view or her drinks on the table. Her eyes were fixed on a crate, sitting like a trophy in the middle of her living room. She stood silently in front of it, with her arms crossed, just staring. The shipping label read Milan, but to her, it spelled out something completely different: leverage. Her assistant, walked in with a clipboard. “It arrived last night, just like you asked. Customs almost held it for another week, but the gallery’s people hurried the paperwork. They thought it was for the River Crest project.”Sofia didn’t react. “I'm not sure,” she said calmly, though they both knew she hadn’t mentioned buying anything for that project. Her assistant just assumed that since they had a pending project and she was receiving a shipment, it would most likely be for the project. Her assistant tilted her head slightly. There was a question on her

Gabriella unlocked her door and stepped into her quiet apartment. She dropped her keys into the bowl by the door, kicked off her shoes, and walked further inside.Rachel was already in the kitchen, holding a mug. "I thought I heard the door," she said, pouring another cup of tea. "How did it go?"Gabriella managed a tired smile. "It went."Rachel handed her a mug and pointed to the couch. "That good, huh?"They sat down together. Gabriella held the warm mug for a moment before speaking. "The event was really impressive. It was very fancy. A bit grander than I expected."Rachel raised an eyebrow. "That doesn't sound like the problem."Gabriella paused, then added quietly, "Alejandro was there."Rachel blinked. "Oh.""He gave a speech," Gabriella said, her voice steady. "Right before he started speaking, he looked around the room. His eyes landed on me."Rachel watched her carefully. "And?"Gabriella stared into her tea. "It was just a moment. He didn't pause, but I knew he saw me.""An

Alejandro hadn’t moved from the corner where he sat at the event. He sat alone now, with a glass of water untouched before him. The ice had long melted. The crowd from the event was beginning to thin, as people began to leave. Conversations were ending, as the attendees headed toward the exit, and for the first time all night, he felt like he could finally breathe.Still, he just sat there.Gabriella had walked past him earlier; well, not past. She went around him in a neat little circle, polite enough to be social, distant and enough to show she was avoiding him like a plague. She had spoken to Sofia, then left. He hadn't gone after her, not with everyone watching, and not with everything between them unresolved and now even more complicated.“Mr. Hernandez?” Sofia’s voice broke through his thoughts. He turned his head slightly. She stood a few steps away, holding a clutch in one hand and the faintest smile on her lips. "I just said goodbye to the museum donors," she continued. "Ri
