DAMON'S POV

Selene and Kael eagerly tug me through the dim, deteriorating hallways of their dilapidated school. The grime-streaked floors are scuffed beyond recognition, and I instinctively recoil at the sight, resisting the overwhelming need to scrub them clean on the spot. The classrooms are no improvement. Desks are chipped and splintered, some barely standing. A few students are even sitting on plastic milk crates instead of chairs. I scan my surroundings to make sure we’re really in a school and not in some makeshift shelter.

Kael proudly leads me to his desk, which stands out as the only one that looks remotely tidy. From his bag, he pulls out a pristine white tablecloth and begins to set up his workspace with meticulous care. His pencils are laid out in perfect alignment, each one placed deliberately. Meanwhile, Selene dumps her pencil case upside down on her desk without a second thought. I see Kael flinch before casting her a disapproving look and immediat

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 118: THREE IN BED

DAMON'S POVI gathered her into my arms with gentle care, and not even a flicker of movement stirred from her body. Her breath remained deep and steady, her limbs limp, her weight slack against my chest. It was startling just how deeply asleep she was. The chaos from earlier — the raised voices, Elysia’s screaming — hadn’t touched her in the slightest. It made me wonder how much she must be carrying during the day, to reach a level of exhaustion so complete that even shouting couldn’t reach her.As I made my way quietly down the hallway, the hush of the house wrapped around me, broken only by the sudden rustle of sheets and a small voice calling out from one of the rooms.“Dad, are you staying in here tonight?” Kael’s sleepy voice came from behind his door, his head just barely poking out from beneath his blanket. His eyes were still puffy with sleep, one tiny hand rubbing at them as he blinked up at me.I stepped closer, just enough for him to se

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 117: BUBBLEGUM DISASTER

DAMON'S POVThe shower was impossibly cramped, like trying to clean myself inside a broom closet. Each movement brought chaos—an elbow collided sharply with the tiled wall, a bottle toppled from the overcrowded caddy, crashing onto the slick floor. I had barely stepped in before nearly knocking myself unconscious on the absurdly low showerhead. A few inches lower, and it would’ve doubled as a guillotine. Who on earth designed this torture chamber? And then there was the color.Everything—absolutely everything—was pink. A relentless explosion of bubblegum hues assaulted my senses. Pink shampoo lined the shelf like soldiers. Pink bars of soap sat in their trays, almost smug. A pink shower curtain clung to the rod like cotton candy, and the matching bathmats underfoot made it feel like I was showering inside a flamingo’s fever dream. I hadn’t imagined her to be the type to embrace this level of frilly chaos. Clearly, I’d misjudged. Regret crept in—I should’ve

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 116: VANILLA FUDGE

VELARA'S POVThe room buzzed with a kind of restless exhaustion, the kind that settled deep in the bones after a long day filled with too much noise and not enough rest. Damon’s voice cut through the quiet like a tired sigh, laced with sarcastic disbelief. “Calm down, will you? You and Kylie are easily the most hotheaded rogues I’ve ever had the misfortune of crossing paths with.” His tone was playful, but the weariness behind it was unmistakable.Across the room, Elysia let out a groan, the sound dragged from somewhere deep in her chest. She rubbed at her eyes with the back of her hand, the gesture oddly reminiscent of a cranky child past her bedtime. Her limbs moved slowly, as though each one carried its own weight. “Sorry,” she muttered, her voice cracking under the strain of fatigue. “I’m just running on empty.”She bent to retrieve a crumpled sweater from the floor, the fabric pooling in her hands like something forgotten. Her face twisted into a grim

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 115: DEVIL IN WAISTCOAT

VELARA'S POVThere’s a strange tension in the air having Damon inside my home. It feels foreign. Off. The kind of awkwardness that prickles beneath the skin. Things I normally handle for Kael were now being redirected to his father. Like cutting up his food. All of a sudden, I wasn’t the one he needed. When it came time for his bath, he didn’t call for me. He wanted Damon. All evening, my hands felt useless, like they didn’t belong to me. The task was simple—just warming up dinner. Nothing complicated. Nothing strenuous. But the way they trembled slightly, hovering over the microwave buttons or fumbling with the edge of a plate, told a different story. I couldn’t focus. My body moved through the motions, but my mind was stuck somewhere far darker.Damon, on the other hand, said nothing. Not a single word of complaint. He didn’t even seem to notice how disconnected I was. He sat there, fully absorbed in Kael’s stories, his eyes softening in a way I hadn’t s

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 114: PHOTOS AND FOUNDATION

VELARA'S POV With a reluctant exhale, I give in. He’s definitely going to be the most muscular secretary we’ve ever had at the front desk. He looks hilariously mismatched sitting behind it, especially with the pastel pink stationery and dainty decorations. I unlock my office door and head straight to the bookshelf. Pulling out the old hotel photo album, I make my way to my desk and settle into the chair. Damon walks over, standing beside me as I open the cover. The first page holds an aged black-and-white photograph of Lilith’s parents back when they owned this place. I remove the picture and hand it to him. It shows a man and a woman cradling a baby, which, according to Lilith, is her. Damon studied the photograph in his hand, head tilted slightly as his brows pulled together in faint concentration. “This doesn’t look too bad,” he murmured, eyes lingering on the aged black-and-white image. A quiet laugh escaped me, no more

  • TO DENY A LUNA   CHAPTER 113: REWRITING THE RULES

VELARA'S POVI waved off the earlier subject, urgency pressing harder now. Whatever else there was could wait. Right now, I needed clarity. My voice was steady as I turned to Isla, asking what she truly needed.“Yes.”Her shoulders were tight, and the strain in her voice made it clear how hard this had already been for her. She explained, carefully controlling her tone, that they were threatening to discharge him—unless he could start paying. The justification? A supposed lack of beds. But the truth was obvious beneath the excuse. He was a rogue. And rogues never got the benefit of the doubt.Behind me, Damon let out a gruff, disbelieving sound, the frustration in his voice sharp as he called it out for what it was—nonsense. He pointed out what we already knew. The hospital wasn’t even near full capacity.Isla dropped her gaze to the floor. There was a heavy silence before she admitted the truth, one we’d all grown painfully used to. It w
