The upper residential wing of the Crescent Moon Pack manor is always colder than the rest of the estate. Thick stone walls, built generations ago to withstand siege and winter alike, seem to store the chill of every passing season. Tonight, the air feels particularly sharp, biting right through my woolen shawl.

I walk down the quiet corridor toward Kael’s study, wanting to speak with him before the madness of tomorrow.

The flagstones are uneven beneath my thin slippers, but I know every dip and groove by heart. I have walked this path a thousand times as a girl, racing to meet him after his private lessons. Back then, the hallway felt full of warmth and running laughter. Now, the wall torches flicker low in their iron sconces, casting long, grotesque shadows that stretch and warp against the dark tapestries.

Tomorrow is the formal welcoming ceremony, a grand public display to honor his return from the northern border campaigns. The entire territory is buzzing with anticipation, a frenzied energy that has kept me on edge all day. I just need a single moment with him away from the crowds, a quiet space to look into his eyes and find the boy who used to share sweetberries behind the old oak tree. I need to know that the fragile hope in my chest isn't a delusion.

My hand is already half-raised, fingers curling into a loose fist to tap against the dark oak, when the sudden friction of speech freezes me mid-motion.

Voices rise from behind the heavy wood, sharp and tense, stopping my hand before I can knock.

The door is thick, banded with heavy iron studs designed to keep secrets in, but the stone corridor acts as a natural amplifier, catching the harsh vibrations and carrying them straight to my ears. My heart hitches a ride up to my throat, hammering wildly against my ribs. I should step back. I should turn around and walk away, respecting the privacy of the future Alpha. Yet, my boots feel as though they have been nailed to the floorboards.

"She is a Beta's daughter, Kael," the Alpha King’s voice rumbles, cold and unyielding. "You need an alliance, not a childhood playmate."

The words hit me like a physical blow, knocking the wind straight out of my lungs. Alpha King Kenneth sounds exactly like the stone walls surrounding us—ancient, rigid, and completely lacking in human warmth. There is no room for sentimentality in his tone, only the brutal arithmetic of power and territory. He speaks of me not as a person, but as an operational oversight, a minor variable that needs to be permanently deleted from his son's ledger.

I press my back against the rough stone wall adjacent to the frame, my fingers digging into the mortar until my nails ache.

I hold my breath, waiting for Kael to defend me, to speak of our bond.

Come on, Kael, I plead silently into the dark corridor, my chest tightening until it feels like it might burst. Tell him. Tell him about the promise you made when we were ten years old. Tell him that a fated connection cannot be traded away for border land or gold coins. I strain my ears, desperate for the sound of his deep, familiar voice cutting through his father's tyranny, demanding the right to choose his own Luna. I expect the passionate fire of the boy who swore he would always protect me.

Instead, there is only a long, heavy silence that chips away a piece of my soul.

The silence stretches out, thick and suffocating, filling the narrow hallway until I can barely breathe. Every tick of the grandfather clock at the end of the hall sounds like a gavel dropping on my future. Kael doesn't argue. He doesn't shout. He doesn't even offer a mild protest. The lack of sound is more destructive than a physical strike, a quiet validation of everything his father just spat into the room.

"The Frost Pack has three thousand battle-ready wolves," Kenneth continues, his heavy boots pacing across the study floor, the wood groaning under his immense weight. "Selena Frost is a high-born Alpha female. She brings the northern silver mines and a secure border. What does Aurora bring you, Kael? Loyalty? Sentiment? You cannot feed a pack on old memories."

"I understand, Father," Kael's voice finally breaks through, but it isn't the voice of my Kael. It is flat, measured, and entirely mechanical. The soul has been completely drained from it, replaced by the data-driven precision of a commander who has learned to treat living things like resources.

"Good," the King barks, a terrifying satisfaction dripping from his words. "The public rejection must be absolute tomorrow. The Frost delegates will be watching. There can be no lingering doubts about where your allegiance lies. You will break the informal tie completely, or I will ensure she is removed from the territory permanently."

"It will be executed exactly as required," Kael replies softly.

Executed. The word hangs in the chill air like a death sentence.

My knees buckle, and I have to grip the iron sconce to keep from collapsing onto the cold stone. The world tilts on its axis, spinning into an unrecognizable, hostile shape. The boy who held my berry-stained fingers in the summer heat has been entirely swallowed by the armor he wears. The prince inside that room doesn't see a childhood promise; he sees a political calculation.

I don't wait to hear the rest of their strategy. I turn and stumble back down the dark corridor, my footsteps completely silent against the flagstones, a ghost fleeing a tomb. The heavy warnings Marcus gave me earlier return to mock me, each one a direct hit to my foolish, stubborn pride. Princes change faster. He had been right. Everyone had been right except for me.

By the time I reach the safety of my small, secluded room in the lower levels, my breath is coming in ragged, shallow gasps. I pull the window open, letting the freezing night air rush in to shock my senses, to force the numbness out of my body. Down below, the massive iron gates of the courtyard loom in the darkness, looking like the teeth of a giant beast waiting to swallow me whole.

Tomorrow, the banners of the Crescent Moon Pack will flutter in celebration. The crowds will cheer for their war hero, and Kael will stand before them in his polished iron armor. And I, the foolish Beta's daughter who believed in childhood fairy tales, will be led to the slaughterhouse of his ambition.

The fragile thread holding the glass ornament of my hope has finally snapped, and the shards are buried deep in my chest.

Cold rain hammered against the stained glass windows of the high tower, turning the stone steps slick with water and soot. The spiral staircase reeked of spilled oil and iron. Up ahead, thunder rattled the wooden beams overhead, but the noise inside the chamber was even louder. The Alpha King had run out of ground to take. He retreated to the high tower, his remaining loyal guards forming a desperate ring of iron.Eight guards in black armor stood shoulder to shoulder at the top of the stairs. Their shields locked together, forming a wall of pointed steel. Behind them stood the King. His golden crown sat crooked on his matted hair. He wielded a massive broadsword, his eyes wild with the madness of a cornered beast."Hold the door!" the King roared, his voice thick with spit and blood. "Kill them! Bring me their heads!"Rowan and I didn't slow down. We hit the top step together. My dagger caught the first guard under his throat guard, sliding through the thin leather gap. Beside me, Ro

The heavy iron doors of the grand hall slammed back against the stone walls with a deafening crash. Cold wind rushed into the chamber, carrying the scent of smoke and burnt pine from the outer courtyards. I stepped over the splintered threshold, my broadsword held low at my side. Rowan walked half a pace behind me, his massive frame blocking out the moonlight filtering through the shattered stained-glass windows. At the far end of the hall, standing on the raised marble dais, Selena backed up against the golden throne. Her silk dress was torn at the hem, splattered with mud from her frantic retreat through the lower keep. Her dark hair pulled loose from its jewels, hanging in tangled strands around her face."Get away from me!" she screamed, her hand trembling as she pointed a thin silver dagger toward us. "Guards! Kill them! Tear them apart!"A dozen dark pack warriors shifted forward, their eyes wild and bloodshot. They held heavy iron spears and broad shields, their knuckles white

The heavy oak doors of the throne room yielded with a groaning crack as our breach team slammed through them. Dust rained down from the high arched ceiling, mingling with the bitter stench of wet fur, burnt iron, and raw panic.I charged across the threshold first, my twin silver daggers drawn and steady in my hands. Rowan kept pace at my right shoulder, his massive broadsword held low and ready. Six of our elite Ashford warriors fanned out behind us, their boots clicking against the polished marble floor. At the far end of the hall, standing on the raised dais before the carved stone throne, stood Selena. She wasn't alone. A dozen dark pack warriors surrounded her, their shoulders hunched and eyes darting around the hall like trapped animals. They smelled like copper and fear. But Selena didn't look scared. She looked insane. Her silver-threaded tunic was torn at the collar, stained with dirt and grease from the siege. Her tangled hair hung around her face in wild, matted clumps. Her

The mud near the eastern drainage grate smelled like rotting algae and stale rainwater. I crouched low in the wet ditch, my chest pressed against the damp soil, staring up at the monolithic gray stone of the Citadel's iron-reinforced walls. The roar of distant steel echoed from the main courtyard. Rowan was keeping their front forces occupied, his battle cry carrying over the high battlements like thunder.Beside me, Kael tightened the dark leather strap on his forearm. His face was pale, lined with dark circles, but his grip on his short blade was steady. He didn't look like the arrogant Alpha who used to toss empty promises at my feet. He looked like a man fighting to clear his debt."The tunnel drops thirty feet straight down under the lower dungeon cells," Kael whispered, his breath fogging in the damp night air. "Two guards watch the inner iron hatch. Three more patrol the holding cells where the pack elders are chained.""No mistakes, Kael," I said softly, my voice cold and dire

The air smelled like wet earth, burnt iron, and raw panic. High above the valley, the Citadel sat like a dark stone crown on the sharp peak of the ridge. Its massive black iron gates had shut out the world for generations, but today they were going to collapse.I took a deep breath, letting the wild heat of my silver wolf run hot through my veins. Beside me, our frontline warriors stood shoulder to shoulder in the tall grass. Leather armor creaked as men tightened their grips on shield straps and heavy axes. Everyone knew what was waiting behind those stone ramparts. Kael had packed the courtyard with every loyalist soldier he had left, desperate to protect his dying hold on power."Ready?" Rowan asked, his voice low and steady."Ready," I said.A horn blasted across the ridge, its long note splitting the overcast sky.Our forces hit the Citadel gates with massive, coordinated force, the sound of clashing metal echoing across the entire mountain range. The first light of the final day rises, cutting through the heavy purple mist above the pine trees. It wasn't a gentle sunrise. The morning sky looked bruised, streaked with dull red like fresh blood smeared across cold glass. Then came the drums. The war drums begin their heavy beat, thudding deep in the valley. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. The noise didn't just travel through the air. It rattled right up through the soles of my boots, shaking my ribs and vibrating in my teeth. It was the sound of total war, the kind that meant somebody wasn't walking away when the sun went down.We take our positions, the Citadel gates looming massive and dark before us.The heavy iron-reinforced oak doors of Kael’s fortress stood eighty feet tall, embedded deep into the gray cliffside. Towering stone ramparts stretched out on either side, packed thick with Crescent Moon archers and spearmen. They looked like tiny black ants against the massive wall, but I could hear their bowstrings pulling taut.Rowa
