POV: IVY

My husband did not defend me when his girlfriend embarrassed me in front of his business partners. He waited until we were alone to tell me I had disappointed him.

The table fell into a suffocating silence after Melanie’s words echoed across the linen tablecloth. The senator’s wife offered a tight, uncomfortable smile, quickly lowering her eyes to her dessert plate, while two board members exchanged subtle, knowing glances across the floral centerpiece. Every pair of eyes at the head table was fixed on me, waiting for Gemma’s legendary temper to flare, waiting for a scene that would confirm every rumor whispering through the high-society columns.

I gripped my linen napkin beneath the table until my knuckles turned stark white. My heart hammered violently against my ribs, but I forced my facial muscles into an icy, unbothered mask.

“Of course I haven't forgotten the harbor estate,” I said, keeping my voice smooth, quiet, and completely level. “I was simply considering the museum gallery's new lighting installation for this spring's exhibition. But Michael and I will finalize those details with the board in due time.”

It was a smooth recovery, but the stain had already spread. Michael didn't back me up. He didn't offer a single word to smooth over the tension, nor did he reprimand Melanie for her blatant disrespect. He simply sat beside her, his stormy gray eyes fixed on me with a cold, piercing intensity that felt like a trial where the verdict had already been decided.

For the remainder of the evening, the air around our table was heavy with whispering guests and covert stares. Every laughter felt directed at me; every quiet side-conversation felt like a judgment on my failure to hold my husband’s attention. I sat through the remaining toasts, keeping my chin lifted, enduring the slow execution of my dignity.

When the gala finally ended at midnight, Michael escorted me to the private rear exit of the Grand Plaza. The instant the heavy Maybach doors closed, cutting off the noise of the city, the atmosphere inside the car turned arctic.

Michael leaned back against the leather headrest, unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket. His profile was carved out of shadow and stone by the passing streetlights.

“What was that?” Michael asked, his voice low, flat, and laced with absolute disdain.

I stared straight ahead at the rain-slicked windshield. “I answered her question, Michael.”

“You froze,” he corrected coldly, turning his head to look at me. “You sat there like a terrified amateur in front of the key stakeholders of my firm. Melanie asked a completely reasonable question about a foundation you allegedly spearhead, and you looked like you had never heard the name of the estate before.”

A wave of bitter injustice flared in my chest, hot and sharp. “Reasonable? She deliberately tried to humiliate me in front of your board. She positioned herself as the woman who knows your life better than your wife, and you sat right beside her and let her do it.”

Michael’s gray eyes narrowed into dangerous, icy slits.

“Melanie has been by my side through five years of corporate expansion,” Michael stated, his tone completely devoid of empathy. “She understands the stakes, and she understands this business. If her presence unsettles you, that is your personal failing, not hers. You were brought into this marriage to present an untouchable, flawless front. Tonight, you looked weak.”

I swallowed hard, pushing down the furious, hurt words threatening to burst from my throat. I couldn't afford a real fight. I couldn't let my temper break Gemma’s persona, nor could I risk pushing Michael into investigating why "Gemma" was suddenly struggling with her own past. Arguing would only make things worse.

So I turned my face toward the cold glass of the window and remained silent for the rest of the drive.

When we reached the mansion, Michael walked straight to his private study without a backward glance. I retreated to the east wing, shutting the heavy oak door of my guest suite and locking it tight.

My hands trembled violently as I reached behind my neck to unfasten the heavy diamond choker. The cold metal clattered against the marble vanity, dropping away to reveal the pale, crescent-shaped birthmark near my collarbone. I pulled off Gemma’s emerald rings, shedding the expensive armor piece by piece until I was just Ivy again, exhausted, broken, and completely alone in a cage of gold.

I sat on the edge of the large bed, pulling my knees to my chest as tears finally burned the backs of my eyes.

Needing a single anchor to reality, I picked up my phone and dialed the direct line to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

It rang twice before the night shift nurse answered. “St. Jude’s, ICU unit.”

“Hello,” I whispered, my voice cracking slightly. “It’s Ivy. I’m calling to check on my grandmother’s vitals after the evening shift.”

“Oh, Miss Ivy,” the nurse’s voice softened instantly. “Her monitors are completely stable tonight. The direct medical clearance from Mr. Sterling’s treasury went through smoothly this afternoon, so the specialist team has already ordered the equipment for next week’s procedure.”

A long, shuddering breath escaped my lips. “Thank you... thank you so much.”

“She was awake for a little while earlier this evening,” the nurse added gently. “She kept asking if you were resting well. She told me to make sure you weren't pushing yourself too hard.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing my hand over my mouth to choke back a sob. I’m fighting, Grandmother, I thought. I’m enduring every single bit of it so you can stay here with me.

I hung up the phone, placed it face down on the nightstand beside her photograph, and lay down in the quiet dark.

The next morning, I woke at seven. I dressed in a simple, high-collared navy silk blouse and tailored trousers, applying a light layer of makeup to cover the dark circles under my eyes before heading down to the formal dining room.

Michael was already seated at the head of the long mahogany table, sipping black coffee while scanning financial reports on his tablet. He didn't look up when I pulled out a chair across from him.

Mrs. Gable set a cup of tea in front of me and quietly withdrew from the room.

The silence between us stretched for several long minutes, heavy and sharp. I took a slow sip of my tea, waiting for him to finish his reading.

Finally, Michael set his tablet flat on the table. He raised his dark head, his cold, analytical gaze settling on my face.

“Melanie called my office an hour ago,” Michael said flatly, his voice cutting through the quiet dining room like a winter draft. “She wants to meet with you today.”

My hand froze over my teacup. I looked up, meeting his eyes. “A meeting? With me?”

“Yes,” Michael replied, without a single drop of warmth or hesitation. “She requested a private lunch at the Grand Horizon Club at one o'clock. She believes the two of you need to clear the air after last night.”

“And you expect me to go?” I asked, keeping my tone carefully measured despite the spike of anxiety in my chest.

Michael leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on the edge of the table. His stormy gray eyes locked onto mine with a dark, uncompromising command.

“Melanie has requested a private meeting,” Michael said, his voice dropping into a low, razor-sharp thread. “I suggest you do not make this more difficult than it needs to be.”

It was a private sanctuary for the city's ultra-wealthy, where floor-to-ceiling windows framed panoramic views and the tables were spaced far enough apart to ensure complete discretion. When I stepped off the private elevator in my tailored navy suit and high-collared silk blouse, the maître d’ immediately recognized me, or rather, recognized the face I was wearing.“Right this way, Mrs. Sterling,” he murmured smoothly, guiding me past hushed tables toward a secluded corner booth wrapped in frosted glass.Melanie was already seated. Corporate titans, politicians, and high-society elite moved beneath the vaulted ceilings, their voices blending into a polished hum of money and influence. Beside me, Michael walked with his usual cold, imposing grace, his arm offered to me only because the cameras lined the red carpet outside. My fingers rested on his crisp tuxedo sleeve, but the distance between us felt like a chasm. Remembering the sting of my mistake at his parents' dinner, I kept my answers short, measured, and agonizingly careful whenever board members approached us.“You’re remarkably reserved tonight, Gemma,” an elderly investor noted, studying me over his glass of scotch.“I prefer to let Michael’s achievements take center stage this evening,” I replied sm

POV: IVYOne wrong answer at dinner was enough to make Michael look at me as if I had already failed him.The silent ride back from his parents' estate felt like sitting inside a moving tomb. Rain lashed relentlessly against the Maybach’s tinted glass, blurred red taillights bleeding across the dark city streets. Beside me, Michael sat with his hands folded loosely in his lap, his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. The air between us was thick with unexpressed rage. When the car finally pulled up under the portico of the mansion, Michael didn't wait for the driver to open his door. He pushed it open himself, stepping out into the storm. I gathered the emerald velvet skirt of Gemma’s dress and hurried after him into the warm glow of the foyer, the door shutting out the howling wind.Michael turned on his heel and the second Mrs. Gable took his coat and withdrew down the hall.“What was that performance tonight?” Michael demanded, his voice dangerously low, cutting through the vast entr

POV: IVYMy first family dinner as Michael Sterling’s wife began with a compliment and ended with everyone questioning whether I deserved the name I was wearing. For two solid days after my conversation with Michael, I locked myself in the east wing suite with Gemma’s black binder, flashcards, and handwritten notes. I memorized the history of the Sterling and Sterling-Vance families, drilled myself on ancestral holiday homes in the Hamptons, and reviewed every major family gathering from the past decade. If I was going to survive a dinner under the sharp scrutiny of Michael’s parents, I couldn't afford a single slip-up.When Thursday evening arrived, I wore a modest, high-necked emerald velvet dress that matched Gemma’s precise style, pairing it with minimal jewelry so the heavy diamond ring on my finger stood out like a warning beacon. The private dining room at the Sterling family estate was a masterclass in intimidation. It was money to keep my grandmother alive.I stood by the window of my guest suite at seven in the morning, holding my phone tightly to my ear. The autumn sun had barely pierced the heavy grey fog hanging over the mansion's grounds.“Miss Ivy,” the hospital administrator’s voice sounded crisp through the receiver. “The initial trust transfer cleared the emergency ICU fees, but the specialist team has scheduled the secondary procedure for next week. The remaining medical authorization forms require either your signature as the primary guarantor or direct confirmation from the funding account.”“Direct confirmation?” I asked, my grip tightening on the smooth plastic of my phone. “My mother hasn't routed the remaining balance yet?”“Mrs. Evelyn Sterling’s office requested a delay on the secondary transfer until the end of the month,” the administrator explained politely. “However, the me
