EMBER’S POV

I have walked the length of this bedroom forty times and I have counted every single one.

Knox left before it was properly light. He didn’t wake me.

I felt the bed go cold when he got up and heard him speaking quietly to Reyes in the corridor, but I kept my eyes closed and pretended I was still asleep.

If I opened them, we would have to talk about what was happening today, and I wasn’t ready to do that yet.

I wasn’t ready to face the depleting thing within me, the hopelessness and p

I would also like to address something I have noticed recently because, if I am being completely transparent, I find it quite hurtful. For most authors writing serialized fiction on apps like this, updating one chapter a day is already a normal and consistent update schedule. I know that a few months ago, when I had more time, I was sometimes putting out three chapters a day, and on particularly good days, even four. But as life has gotten busier, I have had to figure out what is actually sustainable for me long-term, and right now, that is two chapters daily. So when I see comments along the lines of, “she just gave us two chapters,” or people criticizing the fact that I am “only” updating twice a day, I genuinely find it hurtful. What exactly am I supposed to be producing every day? The entire book?I think sometimes, because you are reading the chapters much faster than I can possibly write them, it becomes easy to forget that there is an actual person behind this story, sitting do

EMBER’S POVThe corridor goes very quiet. My next breath catches somewhere in my chest, and a cold stillness settles over me.“What I can tell you is that today she’s better than she’s been in weeks,” he goes on, gentler. “She’s not cured. Not by any mile, but she is breathing. She’s sitting up, she’s lucid, and she’s already argued with two nurses, which I am choosing to take as a good sign. Maybe this sustains her for a month. Maybe it doesn’t hold through tomorrow. I genuinely don’t know. So if you want my advice, go in there and enjoy the fact that she’s willing to complain about her overly sweetened coffee.”“Right.” I clear my throat. “Right. Okay.”He doesn’t leave. He’s looking at me with an odd expression, and then he says, “May I ask you something?”“Sure.”“How did you even find it?”“I didn’t find it on my own, I just-”“Lady Ember.” He gives me a look with real authority. “I’ve been practising for thirty-one years. I have never seen blacklung slowed. Not once. You walked

KNOX’S POV“Leave?”“Tonight.” I wave a wet hand toward the door. “We take Silas’s ridiculous box of food, steal a car, and drive to the southern packs where nobody knows my face. We buy an ugly little house near the sea. You get a garden. I grow a beard, get fat, and tell everybody I used to fish for a living. The East would never find us there. Case closed.”Ember laughs against my chest.“And the North? What happens to your people?”“What about them?”“Knox!” She smacks my bare shoulder, splashing water right into my face.“Fine. Fine.” I shrug one shoulder. “Apparently they still require a King. Deeply inconvenient. But I’m allowed to fantasise about running away with my wife for thirty seconds.”She turns and swats my chest with the flat of her hand again.“That is incredibly selfish.”“I know. I’m enjoying it.”“You’re literally the King.”“Yeah. I’ve seen the paperwork.”“Knox.”“Fine.” I catch her wrist and kiss the inside of it, right over the pulse, because that’s the only a

KNOX’S POVI don’t move.“I think everything goes way back to your family’s past,” she says, and it’s coming faster now. “What if this shit started with Lady Ida? Think about it. She was a trader. She had a perfectly normal excuse to disappear for months, cross borders, come back with crates nobody questioned because she was family. Everybody already knew she was strange, so every weird thing became Oh, that’s just Ida.” Her hands are moving now. “What if the East never needed to sneak somebody through your gates, Knox? What if your family literally married the fucking spy in and then spent years laughing about her weird books? Doesn’t that sound far too familiar?”The water has gone almost cold.“Hale. She grew up glued to Ida,” I say.“Exactly. She might be finishing off whatever it is Ida started in this house. Marjorie said Hale followed her everywhere, sat at her feet, swallowed every story.” Ember’s eyes are enormous. “Then Ida disappears, just as mysteriously, and Hale keeps th

KNOX’S POV“Yeah.” I stare at the tap. “That’s what scares me. I stood over that kid and asked him straight if anyone told him what to say. He looked at me like I’d asked whether the sky was edible. He had no idea what I meant.” I shake my head slowly. “Nobody coached him, Ember. Whatever happened, he thinks he actually saw Marjorie.”“Then how the hell—”“Exactly.” I hear my own voice climbing and pull it back. “So now I have a seventy-year-old woman apparently escaping a locked cell, walking past two armed guards, killing seven girls without leaving a mark, then coming back downstairs, locking herself back in and going to sleep. That is insane. Nobody does that. Except the keys went missing, two men swear they saw her face, the herbs came from her garden, and every road points straight at her. It is so fucking tidy that it’s driving me insane.”Ember is quiet for a moment.“Can you tell me what you genuinely think? I know your face.” She doesn’t turn around. “You’ve been circling so
