CHAPTER 6: LET ME HANDLE THIS
KIMBERLY: “Put your weapon down,” As the door slammed open, a number of Corps rushed into the hall but Roland was clever as he quickly grabbed my waist and pulled me to himself, pointing the knife at my chest as if he was about to stab me. "Roland, please, put the knife down," I begged with trembling voice. I was very scared and kept my eyes shut. Roland’s arm tightened around my waist, and the tip of the knife pressed harder against my chest. "I said nobody moves!" he barked with clenched jaw. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a madman. Damien tried to intervene, but Mrs. Carter extended her hand, stopping him. "Let me handle this," she said, her voice calm but firm. I opened my eyes to look at her. She looked so elegant but the choas in the hall contrasted with her personality. "Roland, sweetheart, please, listen to me." "No! You don’t believe me, Grandma," Roland growled. "I love her. I was stupid—Tess tricked me. I didn’t mean to betray Kim. But I can fix it. I swear I can. Just let me marry her. Now." I could hear the smell of alcohol as Roland spoke. It's no wonder he had no shame. The officiant had long since stepped back, watching the scene with wide eyes. He seemed to tremble in fear as he clutched his book. "You think threatening her life is the way to fix things?" Damien spat, fists balled. "You're insane, Roland. Let her go." Roland turned the knife slightly toward Damien. "Back off, Damien! She was mine before you showed up. She still loves me, I know it. We were meant to grow old together. I made her a promise." My heart hammered against my ribs. "Roland, you broke every promise the moment you touched Tess," I snapped. “I'm sorry, Kim! Tess tricked me! She seduced me, Kim! I didn’t mean for it to happen. I made a mistake, okay?" Mrs. Carter took a slow step forward, palms raised. "We all make mistakes, darling. And I think Kimberly isn't even good enough for you. She isn't reliable. If she can switch to another man so easily just because you made a simple mistake, then she never loved you. Don't you get it?” I stiffened. Is that really how Evelyn understand the whole matter? Roland scoffed. “Kim loves me. She's being manipulated by Damien.” “You can be a bigger person and let Kim go. It's your choice right now. Except you want to spend the rest of your life in prison. Wouldn't you rather find peace another way?" Roland seemed to consider Evelyn's words as he hesitated for a second. But then he pressed the knife harder against my chest. "No, Grandma. I swear, If I can’t have her, no one can." “Roland, listen to me,” Evelyn spoke softly, each word measured. "If you truly love her, then let her choose. Don’t force her. She’s not your property." "I’m not forcing her, grandmother," Roland said desperately. "She was mine first. Damien doesn’t love her. He just wants her because I do." "That’s not true," Damien hissed. "You never deserved her. You were too busy chasing skirts while she gave everything to you." "Shut up! Just shut up, will you?" Roland yelled. "Kim and I are getting married now. Marry us now mister!" The officiant stammered, glancing at Evelyn. She nodded slowly. "Give him what he wants. Get them married." The man turned the page, his hands shaking as he began. "We are gathered here today to witness the union of... Roland Carter and Kimberly Walker..." My knees buckled slightly. Roland gripped my waist tighter to keep me from falling. "Do you, Roland Carter, take Kimberly to be your lawfully wedded wife...?" "I do," Roland said immediately, breathless. "Kimberly," the officiant said, voice strained. "Do you—" Suddenly, Roland was yanked back by two officers who had quietly crept up from behind. One tackled his arm while the other grabbed the knife, wrenching it from his grip. He got his hands injured in the process. "No!" Roland screamed, struggling wildly as he was brought to the ground. I stumbled forward, free, falling into Damien’s arms. "I’ve got you," he whispered, wrapping his arms around me protectively. Roland thrashed on the floor. "You all set me up! You ruined my birthday and I won't forgive you!" Evelyn shook her head, looking very disappointed. "No, Roland. You did this to yourself." The officers cuffed him and read him his rights. He screamed my name as they dragged him out of the registry. Silence fell. Then everyone sighed almost in unison. The officiant looked pale and visibly rattled but he found his voice and asked, "Should we... continue now?" Damien looked at me. "Are you okay?" I nodded, breathing heavily. It was hard for me not to shed tears. Roland had almost drove a knife through my chest. "Let’s get married,” I whispered. Evelyn moved to where I was standing and took my hands, squeezing them. "I’m sorry, child. Whatever I said earlier about you being unreliable wasn't the fact. Now let’s do this the right way." The officiant cleared his throat. "Let us begin anew. We are gathered here today to witness the union of Damien Carter and Kimberly Walker..." I barely heard the words. My heart was pounding, but in a different way now. Damien held my hand firmly, and locked eyes with mine. "Do you, Damien Carter, take Kimberly Walker to be your lawfully wedded wife...?" "I do," he said with a smirk. "And do you, Kimberly Walker, take Damien Carter...?" "I do." "By the power vested in me... I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." Damien leaned in and kissed me gently. Everyone applauded and I managed to give them a weak smile. Then we signed the marriage certificate together. It was official. Legal. And done. My parents congratulated me half heartedly. But my focus wasn't on them. Evelyn gave me a hug and kissed my forehead. "Welcome to the family, Kimberly. Now, let’s get you out of this madness and go out to celebrate." Damien grinned. "No Grandma. I have other plans.." Evelyn sneered. “Being possessive already?” Damien only smirked and took my hand in his. He led me to his car and drove off without telling me where we were going.CHAPTER 175: YOU HAD MY DAD ARRESTED?KIMBERLY:I was still half-asleep when the sound of someone knocking on our front door woke me from sleep. At first, I thought maybe it was a delivery, but then I heard a maid’s voice from the hallway.“Ma’am,” she said softly when I opened the door. “Your mom and sister are waiting downstairs.”That woke me completely. I sat there, blinking in confusion. My mom and Tess? At this hour? They never came here this early. Actually, my mom hadn’t stepped foot here since after Damien and I signed our marriage license. My chest tightened. Something wasn’t right.I reached over and tapped Damien on the arm. He was still stretched out, sleeping peacefully.“Baby,” I whispered, nudging him again. “Wake up. My family’s here.”He opened his eyes slowly, gave me that lazy morning smile, then rubbed his face. “What family?”“My mom and Tess. They’re downstairs waiting.”His smile faded a little. He sat up, swung his legs over the bed. “Hmm. Figures.”I squinted
CHAPTER 116; GETTING JAMES WALKER ARRESTED DAMIEN:I was hunched over some files in my office, going through contracts for the new fashion line, when a knock came at the door.“Yeah, come in,” I called, not bothering to look up.The door opened and Roy stepped inside, his usual stone-cold face giving nothing away. But I could tell by the way he shut the door behind him and locked it that this wasn’t just a casual update.“What’s up?” I asked, dropping my pen and leaning back in my chair.Roy walked forward and set a thick brown folder on my desk. “Boss, I’ve completed the investigation into all the recent incidents—the SUV explosion, the car ramming into yours, the kidnapping attempt while you and madam were jogging. All fingers point at one man.”I raised a brow. I had a suspect in mind but I wanted him to say it. “Who?”He met my eyes. “James Walker.”That's Kim’s father, as you guys may already know.I wasn’t shocked at all. The man had always been a snake in the grass. But heari
CHAPTER 115: THE PEACE OFFERING KIMBERLY:I woke up to the sound of drawers shutting and soft footsteps moving around the room. I rubbed my eyes, squinting against the light coming through the curtains. My hand reached for Damien’s side of the bed, but it was already cold.Sitting up, I found him fully dressed. He wore dark gray suit, crisp white shirt, and his tie was perfectly knotted. He looked like he was about to step out the door.I frowned, obviously surprised. “You didn’t wake me?”He turned instantly, flashing that smile that always made my chest soften, but this time I didn’t melt. “Good morning, sleepyhead.”“Good morning?” I muttered, folding my arms. “Is that all you’ve got to say? You didn’t think maybe I’d want to get ready with you? Like we always do?”He came over without missing a beat, lowering himself onto the bed next to me. His lips brushed mine in a quick kiss, then he slipped his hand over mine, caressing gently.“Baby,” he said in that calm tone he used when
CHAPTER 114: YOU THINK I’D PLAN MY OWN KIDNAPPING?DAMIEN:As I came out of officer Harris' office and shut the door behind me, my phone buzzed. It was a text from Roy: “Guards already at the gate, boss.” Good. I knew the minute I stepped out of Officer Harris’ office that the damn reporters would smell blood and camp outside like vultures. When I finally stepped out in the open, flash after flash blinded me. Cameras, mics, cell phones, all shoved toward me like weapons.“Mr. Carter! Is it true you fired at two unarmed men?”“Did your wife fake the attack for attention?”“Are you worried about lawsuits, Mr. Carter?”Their voices overlapped, nasty and greedy.I didn’t even blink. My guards formed a tight wall around me, muscling the press back, arms out, voices sharp. I just kept walking, not a single word leaving my lips. My driver had the car door open before I reached the curb. I slid into the back seat, slammed the door shut, and leaned back. The reporters pressed their faces aga
CHAPTER 113: GIVING A FORMAL STATEMENT DAMIEN:The car was dead silent as we headed home, except for the hum of the engine. Kim kept stealing worried glances at me while I had the phone pressed to my ear.“Officer Harris,” I said the moment he picked up. “It’s Damien Carter. We just got ambushed.”There was a pause on his end, before he respondedt, his voice sharp and alert. “Where are you right now, Mr. Carter?”“In my car. My men are driving us back to the estate. But listen carefully, I had to act in self-defense. Two men tried to drag my wife into a car. I neutralized them. They’re alive, but wounded.”“Neutralized,” Harris repeated, almost like he was making sure he heard me right.“I shot them in their arms and legs,” I clarified flatly. “Close-range. They’ll live.”There was a faint shuffle of papers through the phone before Harris spoke again. “I see. Well, Mr. Carter, considering shots were fired, I’ll need you to come down to the station and give a formal statement. It’s o
CHAPTER 112: KEEPING KIM SAFE KIMBERLY:I woke up to the sound of Damien’s voice in my ear.“Babe, wake up. Let’s go jogging. Early morning, fresh air is the perfect way to start the day.”I groaned and pulled the duvet over my head. “Five more minutes.”“Nope,” he chuckled, tugging at the duvet. “Come on, sleepyhead. You need to keep fit. You gotta look your best on our wedding day.”“I’m already beautiful,” I mumbled from under the covers, curling up like a ball.“You are,” he admitted, his voice softer, “but we’re still jogging.”Before I could protest again, he yanked the duvet right off me. Cold air hit my skin, making me squeal. “Damien!”He laughed like a little boy and leaned down, wiggling his fingers against my sides. I burst into uncontrollable laughter.“Stop—stop! Damien! Please!” I giggled so hard I couldn’t even breathe. He moved his hands down to my toes, tickling mercilessly.“No mercy,” he teased, his grin wicked.“Okay! I’ll go! I’ll go jogging!” I cried between la
