CHAPTER 6: LET ME HANDLE THIS
KIMBERLY: “Put your weapon down,” As the door slammed open, a number of Corps rushed into the hall but Roland was clever as he quickly grabbed my waist and pulled me to himself, pointing the knife at my chest as if he was about to stab me. "Roland, please, put the knife down," I begged with trembling voice. I was very scared and kept my eyes shut. Roland’s arm tightened around my waist, and the tip of the knife pressed harder against my chest. "I said nobody moves!" he barked with clenched jaw. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked like a madman. Damien tried to intervene, but Mrs. Carter extended her hand, stopping him. "Let me handle this," she said, her voice calm but firm. I opened my eyes to look at her. She looked so elegant but the choas in the hall contrasted with her personality. "Roland, sweetheart, please, listen to me." "No! You don’t believe me, Grandma," Roland growled. "I love her. I was stupid—Tess tricked me. I didn’t mean to betray Kim. But I can fix it. I swear I can. Just let me marry her. Now." I could hear the smell of alcohol as Roland spoke. It's no wonder he had no shame. The officiant had long since stepped back, watching the scene with wide eyes. He seemed to tremble in fear as he clutched his book. "You think threatening her life is the way to fix things?" Damien spat, fists balled. "You're insane, Roland. Let her go." Roland turned the knife slightly toward Damien. "Back off, Damien! She was mine before you showed up. She still loves me, I know it. We were meant to grow old together. I made her a promise." My heart hammered against my ribs. "Roland, you broke every promise the moment you touched Tess," I snapped. “I'm sorry, Kim! Tess tricked me! She seduced me, Kim! I didn’t mean for it to happen. I made a mistake, okay?" Mrs. Carter took a slow step forward, palms raised. "We all make mistakes, darling. And I think Kimberly isn't even good enough for you. She isn't reliable. If she can switch to another man so easily just because you made a simple mistake, then she never loved you. Don't you get it?” I stiffened. Is that really how Evelyn understand the whole matter? Roland scoffed. “Kim loves me. She's being manipulated by Damien.” “You can be a bigger person and let Kim go. It's your choice right now. Except you want to spend the rest of your life in prison. Wouldn't you rather find peace another way?" Roland seemed to consider Evelyn's words as he hesitated for a second. But then he pressed the knife harder against my chest. "No, Grandma. I swear, If I can’t have her, no one can." “Roland, listen to me,” Evelyn spoke softly, each word measured. "If you truly love her, then let her choose. Don’t force her. She’s not your property." "I’m not forcing her, grandmother," Roland said desperately. "She was mine first. Damien doesn’t love her. He just wants her because I do." "That’s not true," Damien hissed. "You never deserved her. You were too busy chasing skirts while she gave everything to you." "Shut up! Just shut up, will you?" Roland yelled. "Kim and I are getting married now. Marry us now mister!" The officiant stammered, glancing at Evelyn. She nodded slowly. "Give him what he wants. Get them married." The man turned the page, his hands shaking as he began. "We are gathered here today to witness the union of... Roland Carter and Kimberly Walker..." My knees buckled slightly. Roland gripped my waist tighter to keep me from falling. "Do you, Roland Carter, take Kimberly to be your lawfully wedded wife...?" "I do," Roland said immediately, breathless. "Kimberly," the officiant said, voice strained. "Do you—" Suddenly, Roland was yanked back by two officers who had quietly crept up from behind. One tackled his arm while the other grabbed the knife, wrenching it from his grip. He got his hands injured in the process. "No!" Roland screamed, struggling wildly as he was brought to the ground. I stumbled forward, free, falling into Damien’s arms. "I’ve got you," he whispered, wrapping his arms around me protectively. Roland thrashed on the floor. "You all set me up! You ruined my birthday and I won't forgive you!" Evelyn shook her head, looking very disappointed. "No, Roland. You did this to yourself." The officers cuffed him and read him his rights. He screamed my name as they dragged him out of the registry. Silence fell. Then everyone sighed almost in unison. The officiant looked pale and visibly rattled but he found his voice and asked, "Should we... continue now?" Damien looked at me. "Are you okay?" I nodded, breathing heavily. It was hard for me not to shed tears. Roland had almost drove a knife through my chest. "Let’s get married,” I whispered. Evelyn moved to where I was standing and took my hands, squeezing them. "I’m sorry, child. Whatever I said earlier about you being unreliable wasn't the fact. Now let’s do this the right way." The officiant cleared his throat. "Let us begin anew. We are gathered here today to witness the union of Damien Carter and Kimberly Walker..." I barely heard the words. My heart was pounding, but in a different way now. Damien held my hand firmly, and locked eyes with mine. "Do you, Damien Carter, take Kimberly Walker to be your lawfully wedded wife...?" "I do," he said with a smirk. "And do you, Kimberly Walker, take Damien Carter...?" "I do." "By the power vested in me... I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride." Damien leaned in and kissed me gently. Everyone applauded and I managed to give them a weak smile. Then we signed the marriage certificate together. It was official. Legal. And done. My parents congratulated me half heartedly. But my focus wasn't on them. Evelyn gave me a hug and kissed my forehead. "Welcome to the family, Kimberly. Now, let’s get you out of this madness and go out to celebrate." Damien grinned. "No Grandma. I have other plans.." Evelyn sneered. “Being possessive already?” Damien only smirked and took my hand in his. He led me to his car and drove off without telling me where we were going.CHAPTER 58: FACING BARBRA DAMIEN:I adjusted the cuff of my shirt, glancing at Kim through the mirror as she applied the last touch of gloss to her lips. She looked... stunning. She wore a tailored, light blue blazer that hugged her figure perfectly, paired with white wide-leg trousers that made her legs look even longer. She looked classy. Powerful. And every bit the head of analytics she has now become."Are you ready, Mrs. Carter?" I asked, walking up behind her and wrapping my arms around her waist. She gave me a small smile through the mirror. "I was born ready. You, however, look like you didn’t sleep much.""I had to work on my system for a few hours.”“Hours? And I didn't even notice your absence?” She looked genuinely surprised.“It's hard for you to notice when you were sleeping like that. Peaceful. Soft."She chuckled and leaned into me. "You're getting poetic again. Be careful how you play with words or you might just have me turned on."I smirked. "Then we'll just tak
CHAPTER 57: JUST DON'T STOPKIMBERLY:I wasn’t sure how my hands moved but before I knew it, my fingers were combing through Damien's hair as he deepened the kiss.I moved my body closer to his and the world behind us fell silent, as though it understood we needed space to breathe. There was no interruptions as his eyes met mine, intense yet soft, flickering with unspoken words and untamed emotion.I didn’t speak. There was no need to say anything. And maybe that was the strange beauty of being with Damien. Sometimes, silence felt more intimate than any whispered confession. He pulled me closer as if he wanted to absorb my body into his.“Kim…” His voice was low, husky, and definitely seductive.“Yes?” I breathed, barely able to form words. His hand reached up and brushed a stray curl behind my ear. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?”I tried to smile, but something about his gaze made my chest tighten. “I could ask you the same thing.”He chuckled softly, that deep, velvet soun
CHAPTER 56: THAT STRANGE HUGKIMBERLY:Damien walked slightly ahead of me, his hand resting gently on the small of my back. But even his touch couldn’t distract me from the turmoil in my heart.Whenever I came in contact with my father. James Walker, I always ended up being embarrassed. He made sure to remind me that I was an unwanted child. Him and my mum were very young and didn't plan on having me. But I came, anyway. And I haven't heard the end of it.As we walked into the Carter family living room, I saw my father sitting like he belonged there. Seated beside him were Kelvin Carter, Damien's father, and Barbra, Damien's overly-involved stepmother.I froze. My stomach twisted as if I had just swallowed ice. My dad, the same man who had never visited me without an agenda, was now rising to his feet, arms opening as he approached me with what looked like warmth. That was new. That wasn’t like him.And I couldn't help but frown."Kim," he said, pulling me into an unexpected hug. I
CHAPTER 55: KIM'S BRILLIANT IDEA DAMIEN:I read the email, sighed and continued working. It was nearly 6:15 PM when a gentle knock landed on my office door. I looked up from my laptop, still brooding over the email sitting open on my screen. The subject line alone had been enough to piss me off: "Support Barbra's Initiative – From Your Father, Kelvin Carter."The door creaked open slightly, and Kim's head poked in."Hey," she said, smiling softly. "Mind if I come in?"I forced a half-smile. "Of course not. You don’t need permission to come into my office."She stepped in, closing the door behind her. She had changed out of her blazer, leaving her in a sleek cream blouse tucked into black pencil skirt. She wore minimal makeup which had almost faded away. Her hair was up in a soft bun but she still managed to look like she owned the damn company."You don’t look happy," she said, taking the seat across from my desk.I leaned back in my chair and sighed, raking a hand through my hair."
CHAPTER 54: BARBRA HAS A NEW PLAN DAMIEN:I shut the door behind me with a thud and let out a frustrated sigh. I dropped into my chair and loosened my tie, staring blankly at the phone in front of me. I considered ignoring that call, but it kept vibrating. Reluctantly, I picked it up and answered, trying to mask the irritation still lingering in my tone.“Barbra.”“Oh, good. You finally picked up,” she said quickly, without so much as a greeting. “I’ve been thinking—Carter Corporation needs a Fashion and Lifestyle Department.”I blinked. “A what?”“You know, Fashion. Style. Couture. Every top conglomerate is diversifying. I have someone really talented in mind to run it too. Young, talented. Very passionate.”“And this is something that couldn’t wait until I got home?” I asked, already rubbing the bridge of my nose.“You don’t understand, Damien,” she said, her voice slightly clipped. “We need to move quickly on this. I’ve already set up a few informal interviews and made preliminar
CHAPTER 53: THE HEAD OF ANALYTICSDAMIEN:Kim and I came to the office together as we have been doing these past couple of days. The morning sun filtered through the tinted windows of my office, casting a warm glow on the glass table as I reviewed the presentation notes. Today was a special day for me. Kim was finally going to be introduced as the Head of Analytics in Carter Corporation. I walked to her office and stared at her. She was seated at her desk, eyes focused on her screen, completely unaware of how captivating she looked in that soft lavender blouse tucked into a sleek black pencil skirt. Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail, elegant and understated, just like her."You ready?" I asked, stepping closer to her desk. She looked up, a little surprised. "For what?"I smirked. "Your official coronation. You start today as Head of Analytics, remember?"Her eyes widened. "You're actually serious about this?""Dead serious," I said, slipping a hand into hers and squeezing gen
