CHAPTER 5: COMMOTION AT THE REGISTRY
KIMBERLY: I didn't notice her earlier, didn't even know when she came in. But when I heard her venomous voice and felt her firm hand on my shirt collar, I knew something was about to change. I held her hand and peeled her fingers off my shirt collar. “What are you doing, ma’am? Take your hands off me.” Everly halted in her tracks and turned. “What's the meaning of this, Barbra?” Barbra is Roland's mother. She glared at me. “She had it all planned out. She connived with her sister and set Roland up so she could marry the heir to Carter's Dynasty. Don't you get it? Roland has said several times that Tess seduced him.” Evelyn’s voice was low and cold. “Behave yourself Barbra and walk away. You should be ashamed of what your son did. But instead, you're here defending him. I guess apples don't fall far from the tree.” Barbra seemed furious. “If you succeed in marrying Damien, I will make your life a living hell.” I looked at her and nodded. “Challenge accepted.” A few minutes earlier, I wasn't certain about marrying Damien but hearing her say that made me make up my mind. I followed them to the Range Rover waiting at the garage and we all headed to the marriage registry. My mother’s car was already parked in front of the registry. Dad must have called her and told her to come. "Why is my heart pounding this way?" I muttered under my breath as Damien guided me up the steps. He looked every bit the billionaire heir as he walked with confidence strides. Our parents followed behind us. My father… Well, he had nothing but disappointment etched across his face. "Are you nervous?" Damien asked, his hand brushing against mine. "You mean aside from the fact that I’m marrying a man I barely know to spite another man who broke my heart? No, not at all." He chuckled. "You’ve got fire, Kimberly. That’ll make this interesting." "I’m glad this is entertainment for you, Damien," I snapped, but there was no real venom in my tone. I was too emotionally drained to be vicious. We stepped inside the registry, and the official behind the desk looked up and gave us a polite smile. Then he turned to Evelyn. "Mrs. Carter. Welcome ,” he beamed at her and it seemed she had informed him that we were coming. "Let’s make it quick," Damien said, adjusting his cufflinks again. I was about to say something to him when the door burst open with such force that it slammed into the wall. We all turned around in alarm. It was Roland. His face was pale, hair disheveled like he had been running. His chest heaved as his eyes landed on me. Rage. Hurt. Desperation. All of it swirled in his eyes. "You’re not doing this," he barked. "You’re not marrying my brother." My heart lodged in my throat. "Roland—" "No!" he shouted, cutting me off. "I won’t stand here and watch this madness happen. Kimberly, please—don’t do this." Damien crossed his arms. "You're not exactly in a position to object, brother." Roland ignored him. He moved towards me with slow, deliberate steps. "I made a mistake," he said. "I was weak. Tess… she came to me. She seduced me. I—I didn’t want any of it. You have to believe me. I love you, Kim. I’ve always loved you." I stepped back, my hands trembling. "You didn’t even try to stop it. You looked into my sister’s eyes and betrayed me. Don’t come here acting like you're innocent." "I was drunk! She cornered me! Please, Kim, you know me! We grew up together! You know my heart!" Damien rolled his eyes. "Jesus, this is pathetic." Roland’s eyes flicked to Damien. "You always wanted everything I had. My toys, my friends, my life—and now her? You think you can swoop in because I made a mistake?" Damien smirked. "You lost her the moment she saw who you really are. I’m just the consolation prize." "Don’t you dare!" Roland’s voice cracked. And then… he pulled out a knife. Everyone froze.. Gasps echoed around the room. My step mother screamed. Damien stepped in front of me instinctively. "Roland!" my father shouted, raising his hands. "Put that down!" Roland’s hands trembled, but the weapon was steady. His eyes were glossy now, red-rimmed with unshed tears. "If I can’t have her, no one will," he whispered. "I swear to God, Kim… I’ll end it all. Right here. Right now." Damien spoke calmly. "Don’t be stupid, Roland." "I’m not being stupid! I’m in pain! I’m in hell!" "So your solution is murder-suicide? That’s your grand redemption arc?" "You don’t understand! You’ve never loved anyone but yourself!" "You’re right," Damien said, pulling me closer behind him, his body tense. "But maybe I’m learning now. Maybe she’s changing that." Roland’s eyes flicked to me again. "Tell me you don’t love me. Look me in the eyes and say it." My mouth was dry. My vision was blurry. I wasn’t afraid of dying—I was afraid of how much he had already broken me. "I don’t love you, Roland. Not anymore." His hands shook harder. "No… no. Don’t say that. Please…" "Roland," Damien said quietly. "Look around. There are too many witnesses. And cameras. You won’t get away with this. You’ll spend the rest of your life in prison, and Kim will still be mine." Roland screamed and pointed the knife toward me, but before he could lunge… Bang! The door slammed open again.CHAPTER 58: FACING BARBRA DAMIEN:I adjusted the cuff of my shirt, glancing at Kim through the mirror as she applied the last touch of gloss to her lips. She looked... stunning. She wore a tailored, light blue blazer that hugged her figure perfectly, paired with white wide-leg trousers that made her legs look even longer. She looked classy. Powerful. And every bit the head of analytics she has now become."Are you ready, Mrs. Carter?" I asked, walking up behind her and wrapping my arms around her waist. She gave me a small smile through the mirror. "I was born ready. You, however, look like you didn’t sleep much.""I had to work on my system for a few hours.”“Hours? And I didn't even notice your absence?” She looked genuinely surprised.“It's hard for you to notice when you were sleeping like that. Peaceful. Soft."She chuckled and leaned into me. "You're getting poetic again. Be careful how you play with words or you might just have me turned on."I smirked. "Then we'll just tak
CHAPTER 57: JUST DON'T STOPKIMBERLY:I wasn’t sure how my hands moved but before I knew it, my fingers were combing through Damien's hair as he deepened the kiss.I moved my body closer to his and the world behind us fell silent, as though it understood we needed space to breathe. There was no interruptions as his eyes met mine, intense yet soft, flickering with unspoken words and untamed emotion.I didn’t speak. There was no need to say anything. And maybe that was the strange beauty of being with Damien. Sometimes, silence felt more intimate than any whispered confession. He pulled me closer as if he wanted to absorb my body into his.“Kim…” His voice was low, husky, and definitely seductive.“Yes?” I breathed, barely able to form words. His hand reached up and brushed a stray curl behind my ear. “Do you have any idea what you do to me?”I tried to smile, but something about his gaze made my chest tighten. “I could ask you the same thing.”He chuckled softly, that deep, velvet soun
CHAPTER 56: THAT STRANGE HUGKIMBERLY:Damien walked slightly ahead of me, his hand resting gently on the small of my back. But even his touch couldn’t distract me from the turmoil in my heart.Whenever I came in contact with my father. James Walker, I always ended up being embarrassed. He made sure to remind me that I was an unwanted child. Him and my mum were very young and didn't plan on having me. But I came, anyway. And I haven't heard the end of it.As we walked into the Carter family living room, I saw my father sitting like he belonged there. Seated beside him were Kelvin Carter, Damien's father, and Barbra, Damien's overly-involved stepmother.I froze. My stomach twisted as if I had just swallowed ice. My dad, the same man who had never visited me without an agenda, was now rising to his feet, arms opening as he approached me with what looked like warmth. That was new. That wasn’t like him.And I couldn't help but frown."Kim," he said, pulling me into an unexpected hug. I
CHAPTER 55: KIM'S BRILLIANT IDEA DAMIEN:I read the email, sighed and continued working. It was nearly 6:15 PM when a gentle knock landed on my office door. I looked up from my laptop, still brooding over the email sitting open on my screen. The subject line alone had been enough to piss me off: "Support Barbra's Initiative – From Your Father, Kelvin Carter."The door creaked open slightly, and Kim's head poked in."Hey," she said, smiling softly. "Mind if I come in?"I forced a half-smile. "Of course not. You don’t need permission to come into my office."She stepped in, closing the door behind her. She had changed out of her blazer, leaving her in a sleek cream blouse tucked into black pencil skirt. She wore minimal makeup which had almost faded away. Her hair was up in a soft bun but she still managed to look like she owned the damn company."You don’t look happy," she said, taking the seat across from my desk.I leaned back in my chair and sighed, raking a hand through my hair."
CHAPTER 54: BARBRA HAS A NEW PLAN DAMIEN:I shut the door behind me with a thud and let out a frustrated sigh. I dropped into my chair and loosened my tie, staring blankly at the phone in front of me. I considered ignoring that call, but it kept vibrating. Reluctantly, I picked it up and answered, trying to mask the irritation still lingering in my tone.“Barbra.”“Oh, good. You finally picked up,” she said quickly, without so much as a greeting. “I’ve been thinking—Carter Corporation needs a Fashion and Lifestyle Department.”I blinked. “A what?”“You know, Fashion. Style. Couture. Every top conglomerate is diversifying. I have someone really talented in mind to run it too. Young, talented. Very passionate.”“And this is something that couldn’t wait until I got home?” I asked, already rubbing the bridge of my nose.“You don’t understand, Damien,” she said, her voice slightly clipped. “We need to move quickly on this. I’ve already set up a few informal interviews and made preliminar
CHAPTER 53: THE HEAD OF ANALYTICSDAMIEN:Kim and I came to the office together as we have been doing these past couple of days. The morning sun filtered through the tinted windows of my office, casting a warm glow on the glass table as I reviewed the presentation notes. Today was a special day for me. Kim was finally going to be introduced as the Head of Analytics in Carter Corporation. I walked to her office and stared at her. She was seated at her desk, eyes focused on her screen, completely unaware of how captivating she looked in that soft lavender blouse tucked into a sleek black pencil skirt. Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail, elegant and understated, just like her."You ready?" I asked, stepping closer to her desk. She looked up, a little surprised. "For what?"I smirked. "Your official coronation. You start today as Head of Analytics, remember?"Her eyes widened. "You're actually serious about this?""Dead serious," I said, slipping a hand into hers and squeezing gen
