CHAPTER 4: YOU'LL MARRY DAMIEN

KIMBERLY:

“What is it?” Jasmine asked, seeing the puzzled look on my face.

I turned my phone screen toward her so she could read the message.

“I think you should go.”

“But Jas ..”

“Just go babe. What's the worst that can happen? Just as I told you earlier, be smart and take advantage of the situation,” Jasmine advised me.

I nodded.

My fingers trembled as I put on my shoes and combed my curled hair. I barely glanced at the mirror before I hurried off.

When I got to the Carter's estate, I was led into the drawing room—one of the smaller reception lounges, but still grand with its high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and marble floors that gleamed under the lights.

There, seated like a queen on her throne, was Mrs. Evelyn Carter.

She wore a deep emerald gown that looked like it belonged in a museum, and her silver-gray hair was styled to perfection. Her piercing eyes, was sharp as razors, and settled on me the moment I entered. Damien sat beside her on the right and my dad sat on a couch on her left.

Damien looked charming as he crossed his legs, furrowed his brows slightly and lazily tapped on his phone.

Roland sat at a far end of the room, pouting. As soon as I came in, he rose from his seat and came to me. He hugged me tightly while I tried to push him away.

“I'm sorry, Kim, I didn't mean to hurt you. Please don't leave me.” He looked regretful but I wasn't going to fall for that.

"Come here, Kimberly," Evelyn said authoritatively. “You get off her, Roland.”

I obeyed as Roland shifted a little, my heart a frantic drummer inside my chest.

"Sit."

Her voice wasn’t loud, but it didn’t need to be. It carried the weight of a thousand commands.

I sat on the edge of the antique couch, barely letting the cushions sigh beneath me.

"Why did you do what you did?"

I blinked. I'm I to be blamed now?

I opened my mouth, then shut it. She deserved the truth. They all did.

So, I reached into my handbag, pulled out my phone, and swiped until I found the video.

"You should watch this first, Mrs Carter," I said, handing it to her.

She took the phone with delicate fingers, adjusted her glasses, and hit play. I watched her face, trying to read the minute shifts in her expression.

Even Damien looked up from his phone then.

A heavy silence filled the room as the video played—Roland's low moans, Tess’s breathy whispers, the unmistakable betrayal all on display.

When the video ended, Mrs. Carter handed the phone back without saying a word.

She looked at me, her expression unreadable. “So, what do you want to do with that video?”

I hesitated, but there was no point pretending.

“I’m no longer interested in getting married to Roland,” I said, my voice low but firm. “I’m aware of the deal between our two families but I can't live with a man who fucks my own sister every chance he got.”

“Watch your language, Kim.” Evelyn warned.

“I'm sorry, Mr. Carter.” I apologized. Then continued. “This video is evidence of why I'm no longer interested in getting married to him. Not after this. I can’t trust him. I won’t waste my life waiting for him to hurt me again.”

“I already told you I'm sorry Kim, more than ten times.” Roland was still on his feet.

“That doesn't change a thing,” I retorted.

Damien cleared his throat, his lip twitching into something that looked suspiciously like satisfaction.

His grandmother gave him a side-eye before turning back to me.

“Good,” she said. “Then you’ll marry Damien.”

Roland gasped.

My heart palpitated..

And my Dad didn't look happy at all. He probably came to convince Evelyn to let Roland marry Tess.

What he just heard was totally unexpected.

“What?” I cried.

“That's not happening. There's no way in hell I'm letting Damien have her.” Roland protested defiantly.

Evelyn turned to his direction with a look of disdain. “You dare to challenge me?”

“I'm sorry, Nanna but Kim and I grew up together. She might be upset now but when she calms down, she'll get back to her senses and realise that we can't live without each other. I love her, grandmother.”

“You should have thought about all these before you went about sleeping with her sister.” Evelyn retorted.

Roland turned to Damien. “What do you have to say about this? Please tell Nanna you can't take my wife.”

“She's not married to you yet, Roland. So you can't just call her your wife. Besides, I've always had the best interest of this family at heart and if Nanna says marrying Kim will save our family name from a scandal, then so be it.”

“You bastard! How dare you….” Roland was so furious.

He raised his hand to hit his brother but Damien gave him a look that says ‘I dare you to try.”

“I'm the Victim in all of this, Roland.” Damien seemed a little smug. “I didn't make you go sleep with your fiancee 's sister and neither did I ask Kim to kiss me. Now I'm being forced to marry her and you still blame me?”

But the look on Damien's face said he isn't entirely against the idea.

“Mrs. Carter, please I.. I didn't mean to stir any trouble..” I spoke to her with a trembling voice.

She lifted a finger, silencing me.

“This family doesn’t do scandals. And you, Kimberly, are already caught in one. You kissed Damien in front of the cameras. Your sister posted it on social media. Your father is humiliated. Roland is a disgrace. But you,” she smiled faintly, “you can still make something good out of this.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but nothing came out.

Damien leaned forward then, his voice calm but firm. “Do I have a choice in this, Nanna?”

I took a quick glance at him. His eyes looked as piercing as his grandmother’s and his beard was neatly trimmed. His lips pressed into a thin line and his designer suits hugged his broad frame like a second skin.

He was hot, really hotter than Roland.

But this was really irrelevant right now.

His grandmother simply shook her head and muttered, “No.”

“I don’t want to marry Roland anymore,” I whispered. “But I didn't think it would come to this.”

“Life rarely goes according to plan,” Mrs. Carter said. “You’re getting married right now. Your marriage licence has to be flaunted in the same platform where the picture of you kissing Damien was posted. That way, no one will have the right to question you kissing your husband in public. Did I make myself clear?”

“Yes, Mrs Carter.”

Damien stood, adjusting his cufflinks with a sigh. “Well. I suppose we should get going.”

“That marriage will never happen.” Roland said as he stormed away.

“It’s not like you can do anything about it.” Evelyn said as she rose to her feet.

I stood up and followed her behind. But I wasn't sure where I was going because I sure couldn't be dragged into a marriage I didn't plan for.

But as I took a few steps towards the hallway, a woman appeared out of nowhere and jacked the collar of my shirt. “You cheap conniving sloth! You must have planned all this.”

CHAPTER 33: THE TWITTER POSTKIMBERLY:“Welcome Dad,” I greeted politely.I didn't bother responding to my Dad’s statement about the way I talked to Tess, because I knew he cherished Tess more than me and responding to him would only make us argue. I wasn't ready for that.Instead, I stepped out of the ward for some air. The hallway was quiet, the kind of quiet that made every little sound feel amplified. My phone buzzed in my palm. Beth was calling me.I swiped to answer. "Hello?""Kim! Oh my God, have you seen what's on Twitter?"The urgency in her voice immediately set me on edge. "Twitter? No, I haven’t checked anything. I’m in the hospital. My mum’s still here, recovering.""Kim," she said, voice dropping, "there's a post about you. It’s going viral."My stomach twisted. "What kind of post?""There’s a picture of you and Roland—he’s standing close to you, holding flowers. Someone captioned it, 'She married one brother but still can't let go of the other. But Damien was smart and knew Tess too well.“Touché,” Tess said after Damien rejected her dinner offer. “But it was worth asking.”Damien turned to me and pressed a quick peck to my temple. “I’ll see you later.”“Okay,” I responded softly. As he turned to leave, Tess stepped aside—barely—and her shoulder brushed his.It was deliberate.Damien didn’t look back, but the smirk I saw on Tess's face left me a little bit irritated. What the hell was Tess up to now?I decided not to dwell on it.Mum had eaten a little and was now propped up on the bed, awake and watching the muted television hanging from the corner. Her fingers occasionally twitched over the sheets, but her color had returned slightly. I sat beside her, scrolling through my phone, still feelin

CHAPTER 31: I NEED YOU TO RESPECT BOUNDARIES DAMIEN:I sat near the conference room window, trying to pretend I gave a damn about the board’s quarterly projections, but my mind was on my sudden marriage and the chaos that came with it.I was supposed to be listening. The projector hummed lowly, displaying graphs and quarterly projections onto the wall of the conference room. The CFO was in the middle of a very enthusiastic breakdown of our third-quarter profits and stock trajectory. Words like "capital efficiency" and "emerging markets" was all I could hear. But all I could think about was Kim.My sudden wife. My fiery, complicated wife.I leaned back in my chair, and folded my arms, trying to appear engaged while my mind ran circles. Our marriage had been chaos from the start. She didn’t plan it. Neither did I. We ended up together because Roland, my step brother, cheated on her. So, seeing me with other girls must have made her feel like the unluckiest woman on earth. I understo

CHAPTER 30: THE UNEXPECTED VISITORKIMBERLY:“Can I come in, Kim? Please?”That was Barbra at the door begging to enter my room. Isn't that unbelievable? She was dressed in a chic beige jumpsuit and flat heels. Isn't that too glamorous for 8 a.m? She stood with a perfectly rehearsed smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes."Barbra?" My brows drew together. "What do you want?"“You know, I'm your mother in-law. You should call me Mum,” Barbra stated.I scoffed before I could stop myself. “My mother in-law is late.”"Don't be dramatic, Kim. Can I come in?" she asked again, her tone surprisingly... gentle.I blinked, utterly thrown off. Of all the people I expected to see at my door, she ranked dead last."Um... sure," I said, stepping aside reluctantly. I tightened the robe again, not missing the flick of her eyes as they scanned our private living room. She walked in like she was in charge, sat on the couch and picked up the remote control. I remained standing, definitely alert.Th

CHAPTER 29: CAN I COME IN, KIM?KIMBERLY:It was almost dawn when I dozed off on a hospital chair. It wasn't easy sitting all night. My back practically hurt. But I didn't mind at all. This is my mother we're talking about here.Luckily Damien sent his driver as he had promised and I was a bit relieved. The doctor said my mother's surgery would take place later today. But I had to go and take a short rest, freshen up and have a change of clothing. I couldn't do all that here in the hospital. It was around 7:am when Damien's driver arrived. As soon as he pulled up at the entrance of the hospital, I rose from my chair and went to him.“Hi, just give me a minute. I need to let my family know I'm leaving.”“No problem, ma’am. Take your time.”I went back to the ward and leaned down gently, pressing a soft kiss on my mother's forehead.“You’ll be okay, Mum,” I whispered, brushing a few stray strands of hair from her face.I turned to the nurse nearby and slipped some dollar notes into her

CHAPTER 28: A NIGHT IN THE HOSPITAL WITH MY FAMILY EVERLY: I tried to ignore Tess but she seemed determined to make trouble. How could she even think of fighting me when our mother was lying critically ill here in the hospital? Her voice, coated with that signature sarcasm, cut through the air. "Show off, “ she hissed. “You can fool every other person but you can fool me, Kim. We both know this marriage is just for show. And Damien doesn't even care about you. So who are you trying to impress, hugging him in public?” I turned slowly, willing my temper to stay buried deep. “If it's easy, go find someone you can hug in public,” I shot back. She was left speechless. “You should be worried about Mum’s health right now but you obviously can't hide your jealousy even in a moment like this.” I was ready to give her a piece of my mind but Damien gently placed a hand on my wrist. "It's enough," he said, his voice low, firm, and calm. "She’s not worth it." Not knowing what else to s

  • TRADING MY EX FOR HIS STEP BROTHER    THE DEPOSIT HAS ALREADY BEEN MADE

CHAPTER 27: THE DEPOSIT HAS ALREADY BEEN MADE KIMBERLY:It took about twenty minutes before we arrived at St. James Hospital. When we arrived, Damien parked swiftly, and I jumped out even before the engine fully died.My fingers kept trembling and my heart hammered in my chest as we stepped away from the car. “Relax Kim,” he said, noticing how nervous I was. “Your mother will be fine.”I nodded in appreciation. My mom... I just hoped she would be fine.We rushed into the emergency ward, and after verifying my identity, a nurse led me inside. My Dad paced the hallway and stopped as soon as he saw us. “Kim, Damien, you came.”“You didn't expect me to come?”“I didn't expect Damien to come with you.”“Oh. Where's Mum?”“Come,” he said as he took us to her ward. Then the sight of my mother made me shiver. She looked so... helpless. And pale against the hospital sheets. Wires and tubes were connected to her frail body. And her chest rose and fell slowly, almost too slowly."Mom..." I wh

  • TRADING MY EX FOR HIS STEP BROTHER    YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, KIM

CHAPTER 26: YOUR BEAUTIFUL, KIMKIMBERLY:“You're beautiful, Kim,” Damien whispered as he nibbled my earlobe with his tongue.By the time his lips found mine again, I was trembling. The second movie still played softly in the background—365 Days, a bold, sensual film about a mafia boss who gives a woman a year to fall in love with him. The movie has intense seduction, power play, and raw chemistry. I had chosen it as a second option after Damien complained that Perfect Strangers, the first movie I had chosen, didn't give him what he wanted. I had hoped that 365 Days would stir something in Damien, and make him see me as more than a reluctant wife. And from the way his hands roamed my body now, it was working. His fingers slid along my bare thigh, grazing the hem of the wine red silky robe I had purchased earlier that day. It was barely decent, clinging to every curve with just a single tie at the waist. The hem stopped at my upper thigh, leaving my legs exposed. This outfit also c

CHAPTER 25: SHARING A KISS KIMBERLY:Roland was about to enter the living room but when he saw me putting a piece of dessert into Damien's mouth, he turned abruptly and left. I smirked and Damien chuckled.“What game are you playing, Kim?”I pretended like I didn't understand. “What do you mean? Is it a crime to enjoy a meal with my husband?”He shook his head in disbelief. “I didn't know you had so much mischief up your sleeve.”“Oh, so I'm now the one who's mischievous? Simply because I stopped allowing the Carter's to toy with my emotions? Look Damien, I'm done playing the victim.”“Well, I think I like this version of you. And I think we should start afresh.”I nodded. “It's okay with me.”When we finished eating, he took my hand and led me upstairs. I quickly washed up and put on the robe I just purchased a few hours ago.Damien's eyes lit up when I emerged in our private living room. “Wow! You look like a piece of steak,” he said with a smirk. “I need to wash up too. Give me a
