I’ve always found comfort in silence. 

As a 24-year-old librarian, my days are always blurry, people criticize me for being weird. I have no friends so I spend my time alone in the most predictable way possible.

I should have left hours ago, but I liked being here alone. Of course, No one to make awkward conversations with since no one expects anything from me. 

I heard a sound.

A low, velvety whisper that seemed to brush right against my ear.

 I froze. My heart slammed against my ribs.

 I spun around, but the aisle was empty. The whisper had sounded so real, I could swear.

The voice was warm, masculine, and dangerously close. I told myself it was just my imagination, but my skin was already tingling.

I kept walking toward the back wall then I saw something strange.

A soft golden glow appeared between two massive bookshelves I walked past a thousand times. It was a  hidden section. 

The books here looked ancient, their leather spines shimmering faintly. Titles like The Touch of Shadows, Bound by Moonlight, and Whispers After Dark seemed to pulse with their own light.

My fingers trembled as I reached out and pulled one book from the shelf. It felt warm, almost alive. I was so curious to see so I opened it slowly.

The words on the page began to move, swirling like black smoke across the paper. I gasped.

A deep, rich voice filled the air behind me.

“Hello, little librarian.”

I whirled around, nearly dropping the book. Standing there was the most striking man I had ever seen in my entire life. 

He was tall and broad-shouldered, with dark hair streaked with silver at the temples. His eyes were a piercing midnight blue that seemed to pull me in. 

He wore a fitted black shirt that clung to his powerful frame, looking both refined and untamed.

“Who are you?” I whispered, pressing my back against the shelf.

“I am Lucian,” he said calmly, his voice like warm velvet. “Guardian of the Midnight Library. This section only appears between twelve and one. You were never meant to find it.”

I couldn’t breathe properly. “This isn’t real. I must be dreaming.”

Lucian stepped closer, moving with graceful confidence. “Would you like me to prove how real this is?”

My pulse raced for a moment. Every instinct told me to run, but my body refused to move. There was something magnetic about him. He looked dangerous and irresistible at the same time.

“These books contain ancient erotic magic,” he warned, his midnight eyes locked on mine. “Every story can be brought to life. The pleasure you’ll feel will be real. Absolutely real. But staying too long comes with a price.”
