It didn’t take long for the numbness to settle in. Looking around at the enormous room carefully decorated with the smiling faces of friends and family, it was clear they were from two different worlds. Zira wiped her eyes with the back of her hand for what felt like the hundredth time. This time her face stayed dry.

There was no use in shedding any more tears. She pushed the blankets off herself and looked around the room until she found her shoes. It didn’t take too long. They were the only pair lying on the floor. Kady’s mountain of shoes was neatly organized in her walk-in closet. Zira moved to the bedroom door paying extra attention to how she rolled her feet across the ground so they didn’t make a sound.

It was hard to ignore the fact that this was the second time this week that she had to sneak out of someone’s house. It’s not like they were going to stop her from leaving. She just didn’t want to have to answer any questions. Especially since she was certain they were all lyin

    All of the voices grew louder until they were howling inside her head. She looked into the bright blue eyes that pleaded with her. Inky blackness spread from the center consuming all color and light until they were pools of darkness covering his entire eye socket. He lurched forward grabbing the barrel of the gun and forcing it against his forehead. Zira yelped and squeezed. BANG!Zira sat up screaming and flailing. Hands wrestled with hers making her flail more. A firm grasp locked on and forced her down.“Zira! It’s me! It’s me, calm down. You’re okay.” The soft voice brought back all of Zira’s memories. She wasn’t in the woods. There was no cold metal in her hand. No one pleading for their life. Relief flooded through her shaking her whole body. That nightmare was behind her. “What happened?” she looked up at Kady. The concern on her face was almost too much. Light was just beginning to break through between the black-out curtains hanging from the large window across from her bed.

    Zira lurched forward, her screams and sobs filled the air as she looked around the darkness. The sounds of snarls and screams still rang in her ears making her sob harder.“Z, baby what is it what? What did you do to her!” Warm hands rubbed the clammy skin on her shoulders. Zira opened her eyes and blinked. The darkness had receded, illuminated by the warm light of lanterns. “No sir, we were just napping and she started screaming.” Zira whipped her head around. She was in the back of a truck with someone’s arms wrapped around her. None of it was right. Her sobs grew until she was choking. She had to get away. The arms wrapped around her tightened and Mason leaned closer to her face his lips puckered as he tried to press them to her cheek.“No!” Zira screamed and struggled to get away. A large hand caught his face and pushed him backward.“This doesn’t look like nothing god dammit. Get the hell out of here Mason.” The gruff voice snapped. She whipped at her face trying to stop the tea

    Party number one was a bust as expected. Zira and Aubrey got there late. They needed to have a few drinks just to convince their selves to go. Kady did her best to make her not notice the dirty looks but now that it was pointed out by someone else and Zira knew it wasn’t just her it was impossible to overlook. In the past, Zira always had so much fun with Kady that she never noticed the awkward atmosphere. Of course, the alcohol helped too. The three girls were dancing and laughing when Taylor came and wrapped his arms around Kady’s waist. She squealed and turned around to kiss him. They were so cute together it was almost sickening. Zira never thought about having a relationship like that before. After her time with Mason, she just wanted to have fun and do whatever she wanted. The thought of that kind of commitment made her sick.     “Hello again, Doll.” He whispered into her ear. Revolted by his closeness and that awful nickname, Zira opened her mouth to tell him off but his hand clamped down hard over her mouth. She pushed against him but the man was built like a brick wall.“You know I was just curious before but after seeing how those two dumb asses were looking at you I have to see for myself. Don’t worry. I’ll make sure my father gives you a good deal on your tuition.” The smile on his face was pure evil. Zira thrashed against him but it only made him chuckle. He pressed his body flush against hers and she couldn’t help but tremble. Her eyes darted in every direction looking for an escape.The hardness she felt press against her made her eyes widen. As his grip on her mouth tightened Zira bit down on his hand as hard as she could. He yanked his hand away from her just long enough for her to scream. It was a full scream.     Despite the sunny day, it felt like a cloud was hanging over her head. Waffles were her favorite but even those didn’t taste good to her. She tossed the plate into the nearest garbage can on the side of the road. Things had been going well all things considered. Most of the town hated her for some unknown reason but it wasn’t just her. It seemed as though anyone that wasn’t local was shunned.The harassment was another story. But she couldn’t tell Kady or Taylor. Aside from the fact that Zira wasn’t there to make friends, she needed to keep a low profile. Finding Fredericks University was a miracle let alone getting accepted and a full ride. It was the perfect school with good credentials that no one has ever heard of.
