Chapter Fifty-Zander

last update Last Updated: 2025-07-19 01:05:33

The breeze hit my skin awakening emotions that had been hidden for decades. My hair moved in the humid summer wind, and though it was summer in Louisiana, I could have lived outside for the rest of my life. Sweat or not sweat.

Piper stirred beside me, her leg draped over mine, and her arm across my stomach. My arm grew numb over an hour before, but I didn’t dare move. I didn’t want this dream to end.

I still couldn’t fathom that it was over. The curse. The torment. Now it was time for my true life to start. The one I didn’t deserve. The one that included my forever mate. The one woman I would spend the rest of my life with.

Piper stirred again, this time her pretty hazel gaze stared up at me. “Hey,” she whispered. “I can’t believe I fell asleep out here.”

“You needed the rest.”

She pushed off my chest and glanced around at the garden, and the sun moving across the sky. “What time is it? I’m starving.”

“Way past lunch,” I said, sitting up beside her. “I’m sure Vivian has something to

“I want to be a warrior when I grow up, Alpha Blackwood.”Glancing down at the pint-size pup pretending to wield a sword made me smile. “You do. What does your mother think about that?”He put his imaginary sword back into his holder. “She says I need to eat the good stuff and stop sneaking candy, or I won’t have muscles like yours. I think it’s bologna, but don’t tell her that.”I chuckled, while hauling the last of the lumber into a pile by the foundation next to the pack house. With the pack growing the way it was, we needed the extra space for female wolves carrying pups. “I won’t tell if you go grab me three of those cookies I smell cooking in the kitchen.”He glanced at the backdoor. “I’ll be back in a flash,” he said, taking off toward the stairs. It was a relief to get a second to myself from that chatterbox. Though, I didn’t mind. His dad died a few years back in a fight with a few rogue wolves he encountered. It'd been hard on him, and filling that void in his life was an

My body screamed at me when I tried to move the next morning. The positions Zander folded my body into throughout the night had every inch of me pissed. A stretch would do me well today. The sun was well into the sky when I pried my eyes opened the next morning. Sadly, a naked Zander wasn’t lying beside me. The sheets were cold to the touch. Slipping from the bed, I felt a tight pressure in-between my legs, and a grin settled on my face. I could get used to this ... I found one of Zander’s t-shirts resting on the end of the bed, so I slipped it over my head and followed the sound of talking. There was a lightness in the air as I skipped down the steps, and walked toward the kitchen. William and Zander sat at the kitchen table with a man I’d never seen before. I halted in the doorway, suddenly regretting my attempt at being sexy and wearing his clothing. Zander stood up, his gaze swept me from head to toe, and he smiled. “Piper,” he said. “Good morning.”William chuckled. “You me

The tears in my eyes blurred my vision. My father’s tugs became harder, and it only made me cling to Zander. I tried to blink the tears away, in an attempt to see him for one more second. I just needed one more second ... Zander gave up his life for my dad. That reality was a bittersweet poison sliding down my throat. He’d given up our chance to be together to save my father. I wore his mark on my neck, and he gave it up. To save a man that didn't want me to be there. It didn't seem real. It all felt like a dream, a nightmare come to life. Dad tugged me harder, urging me to stand up. “Get up, Sweetheart. We have to find a way out of here.”The bittersweet taste in my mouth turned to acid in my throat. I turned my gaze upward toward my father’s ashen face. “I don’t want to leave. Zander’s dead. He saved your life, and you’re still trying to run! They saved your life!”My father stepped back and stood up straight. “Piper. I know he did, but we have to leave before another one of tho

It was crazy to see the light. To see your life flash in front of your eyes. For the life, you had to slowly seep away, and you have no control over it, because you’re gone. Vapor. The pathetic images that showed up in my exit made me sick to my stomach. The only bright days were the last few weeks with Piper. She’d been the flaming light of hope in my life. And if the hell-hound hadn’t killed me—we would have broken the curse. I’d looked into those hazel eyes for the last time, but this time, I’d seen love staring back at me. Maybe it was the grand gesture of saving her father’s life or just the right timing, but she said she loved me. With a hurt woman like Piper, proving you loved her, meant more than saying it. I was glad I couldn’t see the aftermath of her sitting there with my limp body in her arms. The angry part of me didn’t show until I landed in the garden and I realized something didn’t feel right. Wasn’t I dead? I’d never died before, so I didn’t have anything to compa

Zander pulled me closer to his side as fear started a lake of nausea in my stomach. I watched helplessly as William used all of his strength—which I knew he had a lot of—to pull open the door, with no luck. “What is going on?!” my father asked again, his voice growing louder. I could hear the fear in it even though he tried to mask it as anger. “Is it Douche Boy,” Amanda asked from behind us, over the rim of her coffee. “He did leave a while ago didn’t he?”I knew Henry didn’t have the strength to hold the door closed against William. Even if he used something to barricade us in. Wolves were stronger than that. Zander glanced down at me. We both knew who was behind it. Priscilla had locked us inside. I didn’t know why, but it couldn’t be for any reason that was good. “I’m not sure,” Zander said, his voice calm. Dad’s eyes widened. “Is this some sort of sick game you’re playing? Has Piper been locked inside all this time, too?”“Dad, no—,”He lifted his hat and ran his palm over
