Chapter 7

Author: Bright Light
Stella said nothing. She simply lowered her eyes and hid her emotions.

Julian could not be bothered to talk to her anymore. He got up and walked around the living room. He looked around and asked, “Where’s Luna?”

Luna was a Ragdoll cat. Julian and Yara had raised her together for years. Before they left for the trip, he had told the servants to take good care of her.

He looked around but could not find the familiar ball of white fur. His frown deepened. He called for a servant. “Where’s Luna?”

The servant’s face turned pale. She hurried around the house and searched everywhere. Her eyes darted around.

Finally, after a long hesitation, she lowered her voice and stammered, “Sir… Ms. Wallace… let Luna go. I tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen.”

Stella suddenly looked up. A look of disbelief crossed her face. “What are you talking about? When did I ever let Luna go?”

The servant kept her head down. Her voice became even quieter, but every word cut deep. “Ms. Wallace, I know you don’t like Luna, but Mr. Quinn and Ms. Xenford raised her for years…”

“I didn’t.” Stella’s voice turned cold. “Don’t you dare fling such baseless accusations against me—”

“That’s enough!”

Julian cut her off sharply. His eyes were as cold as ice, and the disgust in his voice was unmistakable. “Stella, how heartless are you? Luna means everything to Yara. You couldn’t even tolerate her?”

He strode over and grabbed Stella by the wrist. His grip was so tight that it felt as if he would crush her bones.

“You’d better pray that nothing has happened to Luna. Find her right now. If you can’t find her, there won’t be a wedding. You can forget about ever coming back here!”

Stella took a deep breath. Her chest heaved, but she did not argue.

She pulled her hand free and walked out the door.

There were no streetlights outside. It was pitch-black. She turned on her phone’s flashlight and searched the paths around the villa, one place at a time.

She searched through the grass, behind the bushes, and beside the rock garden.

After almost an hour, rain began to fall. The raindrops were large and heavy. They quickly soaked her clothes.

She did not dare go back. Julian meant what he said. If she could not find Luna, he really would not let her back through the door.

Her high heels made it difficult to walk through the muddy path. Her heels kept sinking into the mud. In the end, she took off her shoes and walked barefoot.

After another half hour, she finally saw something splashing in the lake.

It was Luna. The Ragdoll had somehow fallen into the lake. She was desperately struggling to stay afloat and looked like she was about to sink.

Stella did not have time to think. She took off her coat and jumped into the lake.

The water was much colder than she had expected. There was broken glass on the bottom of the lake. Sharp pain shot through the soles of her feet.

She gritted her teeth and kept going. She swam toward Luna, grabbed her, and struggled back to shore.

Once she reached the shore, Stella saw that the bottoms of her feet had been badly wounded by the broken glass. Every step felt like she was walking on knives.

She held Luna in her arms and limped back to the villa.

“I found Luna.” Stella handed the cat to Julian. Her voice was hoarse. “She’s okay. She was just scared.”

Julian took the cat. He looked down at Stella’s feet. They were covered in mud, and blood was still dripping from them. His brows furrowed. “How did you manage to get yourself into this state?”

Stella did not answer. She turned around and headed for her room. Her body swayed, but she managed to steady herself.

“Stella, I’m talking to you!” Julian could not help calling after her. There was a trace of unease in his voice.

She stopped but did not turn around. Her figure looked thin and fragile from behind. Her voice was so soft that it almost disappeared into the wind.

“In your eyes, that cat matters much more than I do. So, worry about the cat that’s yours and Yara’s. What happens to me has nothing to do with you.”

With that, she went upstairs without looking back.

Julian stood there. He watched her disappear around the corner. The strange sense of unease returned.

He looked down at the trembling cat in his arms, then at the staircase. His throat felt strangely tight.

In the end, he did not go after her.

Stella returned to her room, took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and went to bed.

Her body felt heavier and heavier. She kept getting chills. She knew she had caught a fever.

She had just closed her eyes when someone knocked on the door.

“Ms. Wallace…” A servant’s voice came from outside. “Mr. Quinn wants you to come to his room.”

Stella opened her eyes. She was too exhausted to move. But she knew Julian would not let it go if she refused.

She forced herself out of bed and made her way to Julian’s room.

As soon as she walked in, she saw Luna lying on the floor. The cat was vomiting and had severe diarrhea. She was barely conscious.

The veterinarian was crouched beside Luna. His expression was grim. “Sir, she has ingested a lot of rat poison.”

Julian’s face was as dark as a storm cloud. He stared at Stella and coldly said, “Stella, explain yourself!”

Stella froze. Tears clung to her lashes and trembled there.Julian let go of her and took a step back. He pulled the ring from his pocket. The gemstone was a brilliant green. A few faint scratches covered its surface from when he had thrown it.“Here. Take it back.” He held out his hand. The ring rested in his palm. “If you don’t want something, I won’t keep it. But if you don’t want me anymore…”He looked at her. His expression was firm and determined, as if he had just made a very important decision.“Then, I have nothing left to live for.”Stella’s eyes widened, and her face went deathly pale. “What do you mean?”Julian said nothing. He turned and walked away. His steps were long and heavy. His dress shoes struck the concrete floor of the hallway with a steady thud. Every step felt like a blow to her heart.Stella stood in the doorway and watched his back disappear at the end of the hall. A terrible feeling suddenly swept over her. It felt as if something had finally snapped

Julian hung up. His face was dark with anger. His fingers tightened around the phone until the case almost bent.He called his lawyer. His voice was cold and firm. “I want to sue Yara for intentional assault, defamation, and false accusations. I want to press every charge we can.”“Do we have enough evidence?”“Yes.” Julian’s voice came through gritted teeth. “If we don’t, I’ll make sure we do.”After he dealt with Yara’s case, he went back to the inn.It was already dark. The streetlights were on. Their dull orange glow fell across the steps and over him. His shadow stretched long behind him.He knocked on Room 301.“Why are you here again?” Stella’s voice came from inside. She sounded tired, as if she had just woken up.“I’m hungry,” Julian said. His voice was hoarse. “You used to love cooking for me. Could you make me something one more time?”There was only silence. It lasted so long that he thought she would not answer.“I’m not cooking for you anymore.” Her voice was so

Julian sat outside the inn all afternoon. He did not leave. He sat on the steps. His suit jacket was draped over his knees, and his shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. His skin was swollen with several mosquito bites, but he did not even scratch them.He called Colin. His voice was hoarse. “Look into Yara.”“Look into what?”“Everything she’s done over the years, especially anything that has to do with Stella.”Colin was silent for a moment. Julian could hear the sound of his keyboard through the phone. “You finally figured it out?”“Stop talking and get it done.”An hour later, Colin sent him a file. It was more than a dozen pages long. It contained screenshots, audio recordings, bank transfer records, and pages of detailed information.Julian opened it. The more he read, the darker his expression became. What Yara had done over the years went far beyond the kidnapping and the false accusations. She had paid someone to tamper with Stella’s car. Someone had cut the br

The owner curled her lip and spat out another sunflower seed shell. “She never said she had a fiance. She only said she was alone and has no family.”Julian felt a dull ache in his chest. It was not a sharp pain. It was a deep, heavy ache that came again and again, like a dull knife cutting into him.He said nothing and went straight upstairs to the third floor, two steps at a time.He stopped in front of Room 301 and took a deep breath. His fingers curled slightly. Then, he knocked. The door opened.Stella stood in the doorway. She wore a faded T-shirt with a loose collar. Her hair was tied back casually, and a few loose strands fell around her face. Her face was still pale. Her lips were dry and cracked. The bandage around her wrist was still there. It was wrapped around her wrist several times. It had gotten a little dirty, and the edges were frayed. When she saw him, her expression did not change. There was no surprise, anger, or sadness in her eyes. She was simply calm.

Julian froze. Tears clung to his eyes, but they did not fall.“Think about it.” Colin looked him straight in the eyes and spoke slowly.“You said she was boring. But when she practiced the piano until her fingers were covered in calluses, didn’t you secretly watch her? “You claimed that she’s uptight, but some part of you enjoyed it when she told you to do something, right?“Then, there’s all the talk about you hating her, yet you never really pushed her away when she chased after you for seven years. Did you ever really push her away?”Julian opened his mouth, but he could not say a word. His throat felt as if something was stuck in it.“You paraded Yara around and kissed her right in front of Stella. Don’t you think that was cruel and childish?”Colin’s voice was quiet, but every word hit Julian like a hammer. “You don’t love Yara. You were trying to make Stella angry. You wanted to make her jealous and chase after you because you wanted all her attention on you.”“Shut

Julian shook his head. His voice was hoarse, as if smoke had burned his throat. “No. She vanished without a trace.”Colin was silent for a while. He leaned against the car door beside Julian. Neither of them said a word. The only sound was the river nearby. The water flowed steadily and quietly.“Julian, there’s something I need to tell you.” Colin suddenly said. His voice was calm, but his words carried a weight that Julian could not ignore.“What?”“Do you remember the night Luna died? Stella fell from the second floor.”Julian frowned. The cigarette was still between his fingers. Another bit of ash fell from the tip. “Why are you bringing that up?”“I looked into it.” Colin turned to him. His expression was serious. The streetlight illuminated one side of his face and left the other in shadow. “Stella didn’t poison Luna. It was one of the servants. She was worried you’d blame her for not taking good care of Luna, so she purposely said Stella had let Luna go. She was the one
