Chapter 2

Author: Yo Yo Yo
David's anxious voice from the other end of the phone snapped me out of my trip down memory lane.

"Hello? Natalie? Can you give me a reply? I need to pick Mia up from the hospital now," he pressed for an answer.

I hadn't realized how anxious he sounded in my previous life. He pushed me to help Mia before swiftly turning around to pin the crime on me. It was almost as if he were afraid of dragging Mia into this mess.

Was David involved in all of this? I couldn't help but shudder at the thought.

I glanced at Mia through my peripheral vision. She looked visibly distressed and kept sneaking glances at room 302. It was as if she was hiding a huge secret in that room.

I cleared my throat and put on a calm demeanor.

"I can't cover her shift. I just helped out at the ER, so I'm exhausted. Besides, I have my own patients to tend to. I'm afraid I won't be able to help Mia out," I replied.

Mia turned around in shock. Since she wasn't expecting me to turn down her request, she instantly got worked up over my reply.

"What? I just need you to give him some fluids! It wouldn't even take up much of your time. Why are you refusing to help me with such a small task?" she barked.

"It's just a small favor, Natalie. Why won't you help Mia out? I'm so disappointed in you," my brother reprimanded me in a stern voice.

Since I didn't want to waste my breath any longer, I hung up the phone and proceeded to tend to other matters.

Mia rolled her eyes and began to grumble under her breath, "What a selfish woman. I knew I couldn't count on you to help me out."

When I chose to help her without any hesitation in my past life, she ended up throwing me under the bus. Hence, I refused to help her again.

Mia usually acted obnoxiously and arrogantly. On top of that, she'd constantly pawn her work off on the other nurses. Aside from me, no one at the nurses' station seemed to want anything to do with her.

So, when she went around asking for help, everyone turned her down. In the end, her stomach ache went away, and she stormed off to the washroom, feeling annoyed.

Why was she in such a hurry to get someone to take over her shift? Did something happen to Max already?

In order to confirm my suspicions, I put on a pair of gloves and headed to room 302 after Mia left.

Max looked shockingly pale under the moonlight. When I lifted the covers and checked his body temperature, I froze in shock.

Max was cold to the touch, and his body was in rigor mortis. In other words, he had to have been dead for at least an hour.

Mia was the one who gave him his IV medication at 1:00 am. Did she accidentally kill him by giving him the wrong drug an hour ago? Was that why she was frantically looking for someone to pin the blame on?

My entire body began to tremble out of fear as the thought crossed my mind.

My first instinct was to inform the hospital of the situation, but I immediately dismissed the idea before I could act on it.

I was currently in the room of a patient I wasn't responsible for. Judging by how irresponsible Mia was, she'd definitely accuse me of killing Max and pin the blame on me. So, once I made sure no one noticed, I swiftly left the hospital room.

After standing at the nurses' station for what seemed like forever, I calmed down and realized something important.

If the patient was already dead around 1:00 am, why did Nick's autopsy report state that the time of death was between 5:00 am to 6:00 am?

Nick was known as a genius forensic pathologist. He was so skilled that he was able to narrow down the exact time of death with only a one-hour margin of error. He had never made a single mistake in his entire career.

So, how did such a professional forensic pathologist make such a big mistake?

By the time Max's father reached the end of the video, he was clenching his fists in anger and glaring venomously at Mia."My son… My poor, poor son…" he cried. "I can't believe you killed him."He continued, "He was only seven. Why would you do such a thing? I don't even want the compensation anymore. I just want you dead!"Max's father was outraged. David stepped in front of Mia to protect her. He'd previously claimed that he wouldn't press charges if the Campbells killed me, but he was now trying to stop Max's father from doing anything rash by using his power as a police officer."Don't do anything stupid, or I'll be forced to arrest you all," he warned. Before he could say anything else, he was hit by a baseball bat. A couple of his teeth were even knocked out of his mouth."What a great swing," I thought to myself.David fell to the floor and began to twitch from the pain. Upon seeing this, Nick didn't have the guts to stand up for Mia anymore. He was just about to cla

Max's father's hands were trembling. He looked shocked."What did you just say?" he asked in disbelief. "I'll kill you if I find out that you're lying to me."David hastily interrupted me and barked, "Stop spouting nonsense, Natalie!"I ignored him and continued, "Someone sent me this video as proof. Take a look at it yourself."I enlarged the video and pressed play. The video was taken in a dimly lit stairwell. In the video, Mia was seen suspiciously making a phone call. She looked very anxious. She couldn't stop stomping her feet. In a panicked voice, she cried, "What do I do? I wanted to teach that brat a lesson, so I gave him some penicillin. I didn't know he was deathly allergic. I didn't think he was going to die from it!"Since it was very quiet at night, I was able to recognize my brother's voice immediately. On the other end of the phone, he was patiently giving Mia instructions on what to do."When 5:00 am rolls around, don't give Max the fluids. Pretend like you ha

Mia chose her words very carefully, and she managed to gain the support of the people online."I think it's commendable for a young woman like her to take responsibility for her actions.""Some medical practitioners are just despicable. How can you blame others for your mistakes? I can't believe she still has a job.""I feel so bad for this girl. My older sister is very bossy as well. She'd never admit to her mistakes. When I call her out, she'd just brush it off by claiming that she's older than me.""In my opinion, the older sister should be the one compensating the victim's family. Why is the younger sister the only one taking responsibility for this? It's not fair at all!""I found Natalie Hoffman on social media! Let's express our opinions directly on her account!"A lot of the comments were from the same few accounts. These people had clearly been paid to insult me under Mia's post, but many of the general users weren't aware of this. As a result, a huge group of people wer

I was very excited, but I quickly calmed myself. Although the evidence suggested that Mia had premeditated the murder, my conclusion remained speculative.I had to make Mia confess to giving Max the stolen penicillin, but there was no way she'd voluntarily admit to murder.By the time I returned to the nurses' station, the Campbells had already left. "Did Max's parents leave?" Puzzled, I asked my colleagues."Yeah. Mia dropped by earlier and told them that she misread the label of the drug vial, which led to a medical error," my colleague replied. She continued, "She even offered them monetary compensation and asked them to stop causing a scene. She also told them to drop the charges against her.""That's it?" I asked in disbelief."Yeah. I told you they were just after the money. As soon as Mia said she was willing to pay up, they looked overjoyed. They even started discussing it right on the spot.""I can't believe the Campbells are asking for eight million dollars. Where is

After asking around, I learned that Max's parents had been causing a scene at the entrance of the building for some time now. They were demanding compensation from the hospital."This hospital killed my son, but no one has taken responsibility for his death yet. You must compensate us for your mistake.""If you won't pay us in cash, you'll pay with blood. I demand justice for my son!" "Look, everyone. This hospital gave my son the wrong drug and killed him by mistake! Do you really want to entrust your lives and well-being to these murderers? They have a blatant disregard for human lives!"I sighed and said, "While I have no problem with them asking for compensation, I find it hard to believe that they're actually grieving. All they do is talk about money.""That's because Max's mom is pregnant with another child," my colleague replied. All of a sudden, everything clicked into place. Everyone instantly understood what was going on. A couple of my other colleagues began to shar

"I—" Mia's eyes were darting all over the place. "That doesn't prove anything. For all I know, you could've injected the patient with penicillin after I left to set me up. David and Nick like me better. So, you probably did it because you were jealous of me!" she barked. At this point, she wasn't even making any sense anymore. Based on how well I knew her, I could tell that she was hiding something. Being charged with premeditated murder was a lot more complicated than being accused of medical negligence. If she were found guilty of murder, she could be given a death sentence.Since the evidence that I'd submitted completely redefined the case, the higher-ups in the police department took the investigation very seriously. A special unit was established to conduct a new investigation. Under investigation for dereliction of duty, David and Nick were suspended from their respective jobs and placed under house arrest while they awaited disciplinary action. All of us were having a
