Nothing like a 2 AM church session after a bloody ambush to make a guy feel alive. I stepped into the chapel, taking in the scene. The room was fuller than usual. Guys were packed around the table like sardines, bloody and tired. A haze of cigarette smoke hung low, curling around the overhead light like an omen.
Jake took his seat at the head of the table, slouching back in his chair as I sat down next to him. The room fell into an uncomfortable silence as the weight of the night’s events settled over us. We all knew how grim things were looking now. The docks were supposed to be a clean hit, any easy score. But nothing about it was clean.
“First off,” Jake said finally, his voice low and even, “tonight was a clusterfuck. But we made it out. That’s what matters.”
