“ I am getting married again, “ Dante said, crushing Aurelia’s heart into tiniest pieces. “ And I am not asking for permission. “
He put his fork down, ending his breakfast and glanced at her who had not even touched her plate. Aurelia sat frozen on the chair. Her fingers fidgeted with the hem of her dress. Her gaze was on her lap and her eyes stung with unshed tears but she held herself composed.
“ Is it Aisha? “ she asked. Her voice was barely audible. Dante looked at her and took a deep breath, shaking his head in a yes. “ She is coming back. “
She closed her eyes and finally …. Accepted. Her husband of 2 years had never loved her. His heart belonged entirely to Aisha Hayden, the woman who left him 3 years ago. In reality, their marriage wasn’t based on love, it was entirely arranged. She did not even want to marry anyone at such a young age but …. She could not deny the only kind person who was there for her.
Vincent Salvatore. Dante's grandfather.
She had barely turned eighteen when Dante’s grandfather had asked her father for Dante’s and her marriage. His words — Aurelia can bring happiness into my family and my grandson’s life — were enough to melt Aurelia.
She never really had a good relationship with her own family who treated her as an outsider due to her living away all her life. Dante’s grandmother, mother and even his sisters were not happy about this marriage. She was younger than Dante and always humiliated for being naive, called dumb and not knowing standards that matches the Salvatores but no one could say anything against the decision taken by Vincent Salvatore.
Dante was not a man made for love. He only agreed because he had to get married one day and because he respected his grandfather. But even after two years of this marriage, they were still two complete strangers to each other. Aurelia had done everything, put in all her efforts so this marriage could work but …. Dante wasn’t a man you could change.
She had grown tired, she was falling apart, breaking. She was losing her own light and when Dante had announced he was going to marry Aisha. She knew there was nothing left. No reason, no one behind.
She finally lifted her head and nodded her head. “ Everyone had said it before and we both also knew we would not last long. “
Her heart ached as she said those words but Dante remained silent but continued to watch her. “ I am not divorcing you. I can’t hurt my grandfather because you were his choice for me. You’re still going to be my wife, live here how you always had. Everything will be the same. “
Aurelia smiled bitterly. Her hands clenched so hard that her knuckles turned white. She shook her head and looked directly in his eyes. “ Right, everything will be the same. You never really gave me any rights of a wife and you’re never going to either. I had been living silently and I'm going to live exactly like that. “
Her dark brown orbs squinted as she chuckled at his concern. She stared at him in disbelief that the man she fell in love with despite everything, could actually speak about keeping her while marrying another woman.
Aurelia was beautiful. One of the gorgeous faces in the world and that beauty had men and women kneel in front of her. But she had lost all that spark and glow because of the unwanted relationship she was in.
“ I can’t live here. “
Silence fell and Dante straightened up. His hands now intertwined as he leaned forward on the table and gazed at her hard. “ What does it mean, Aurelia? “ His voice was deep and by that tone, Aurelia knew Dante understood what she said very well but he was more like testing her if she dared say that or not.
“ I don't think that after Aisha starts living here, there’s any place for me. Well, there was none even before. “
Aurelia spoke. The words were painful, mockful but her voice was soft. Dante leaned back, tilted his face in amusement. He had never seen her talk like that and was amazed that she did.
“ Grandpa won't take this news of yours well and I can’t disobey him. “ Aurelia whispered a laugh and said. “ You're going against grandpa and marrying Aisha. Is this not going to hurt him? “
” I listened to him and married you but look at us. Are we even compatible? You’re way too young to understand the kind of things I deal with. I’m marrying Aisha on mom’s order and because- “ Aurelia stood up and smiled painfully while nodding her head.
” Because you love her. You have always loved her. “
She completed his sentence. Dante’s gaze narrowed at her and lines of confusion formed on his forehead. “ Are you in your senses? “ He stood up, the chair screeched back with force and he closed the distance between us.
“ I want divorce. “ she spoke. She stood her grounds. She had bore two years of this cage with no love, no respect but no she wont accept another woman. If he was going to keep her, she wouldn't be there.
She looked in his eyes, her face tilted up to match it. He was tall. 6 ‘3 muscular lean body that towered her tiny frame. The way his gaze devoured her made her hands tremble and she could feel herself shrinking.
” I am not giving you divorce. Be a little mature and think before you speak. Think about grandpa. “
Aurelia fell silent. She felt her chest aching painfully. “ Why should I be the one thinking about grandpa? Why can’t I think about myself? “
” We both know what grandpa means to you. And about thinking about yourself, think as much as you want but we both know it as well that you’re going to listen to your parents. “
He spoke the harsh truth. The reality of her life. Yes, till today, her family had been the one making decisions for her. What she'd study, what she'd dress, whom she'd meet etc etc.
Aurelia clenched her fists in anger. How could he mock and make fun of her? She shook her head. “ Grandpa loves me and after hearing my decision, I know he’s going to support me. “
” enough Aurelia. I don't want any arguments. I have made myself clear and I don't want any trouble. Aisha will be arriving next week. “ Dante threw the bomb on her head but Aurelia was not going to back down. Not after this.
“ Don’t you dare ask for divorce again and If you dare do it, then don't blame me for what happens to you next. “
Dante’s PovGone. The word echoed in my skull like a gunshot, drowning out everything else. My mind seemed to forget everything or things that surrounded me. The beeps from Grandfather’s monitor, Jessica’s hesitant breathing, Father’s unyielding stare. My hand gripped the phone so tight I felt the case creak under my fingers. Vlad’s voice was still spilling out, frantic, but I couldn’t process it. Not yet.Aurelia. Gone.“What the fuck do you mean she’s gone?” I snarled into the receiver, already shoving past Father and towards the door. The VIP suite room felt too small and the air felt too thick, like it was choking me. I burst out into the hallway and immediately nurses scattered as I stormed toward the exit, my tie flapping loose like a noose I’d escaped.“Dante- ” Father’s voice called after me, but I didn’t stop. Didn’t look back. The hospital doors whooshed open, spitting me out into the cold evening air. My car was waiting at the curb, engine idling. I needed to move, to ru
Author’s PovDante burst through the hospital’s private entrance like a storm. His polished shoes squeaked against the sterile marble. His hair, which was usually meticulously styled, was a wreck now. A few strands fell into his eyes. His tie hung loose around his neck like a noose he’d forgotten to tighten. Sweat beaded at his temples despite the air-conditioned chill. His heart slammed against his ribs so hard he could feel it in his throat. The security guard recognized him instantly and waved him through without a word. A nurse in crisp navy scrubs hurried forward.“Mr. Salvatore, this way. VIP wing, room 1402.”He didn’t thank her nor did he slow down. The corridor smelled of antiseptic and money. Muted voices drifted from behind closed doors as he shoved past a cluster of family retainers until he reached the glass-walled waiting area outside the suite. His father was standing there. Example of what he called ‘ perfection’ ; tall, silver-haired, impeccably suited, speaking in l
Author’s PovDante was sitting behind the wide mahogany desk in his corner office. The city skyline was a gray smear beyond the tinted glass. Files were laid open in front of him. The ongoing contracts, projections, numbers that should have demanded every scrap of his attention but his mind refused to stay anchored. He could not focus on anything but her. Aurelia. She’d looked pale that morning. She looked fragile, in a way that didn’t suit her. She had been looking so down in the past few days and had lost her glow. The faint shadows under her eyes, the way her hand had trembled just slightly when she adjusted the strap of her bag. He’d noticed. Of course he’d noticed. He always noticed her, even when he pretended not to.He growled and ran his fingers through his perfectly styled hair which got messed up a bit but he still looked the devilish handsome God he was. He should have insisted on driving her to the hospital himself. Mia was good- excellent, even but Mia wasn’t him. Mia
Author’s PovI am done. The penthouse door clicked shut behind Aurelia with a soft finality that felt like the end of everything. Her heart was a raw, bleeding thing inside her chest, aching so violently she wondered if it might simply stop. She stood frozen in the foyer for a long moment, staring at nothing. The cold marble floor reflected the dim city lights like shattered glass. Dante loved Aisha. He always had. He would always choose her. So why did this betrayal carve me open like a fresh wound? Why did it feel like dying? Her bag slipped from her numb fingers and hit the floor with a dull thud. She didn’t pick it up. Instead she walked, slow and mechanical, toward the wide leather couch that still smelled faintly of his cologne. The whole penthouse smelled of him, reminded her of him. She sank down onto the couch, inch by inch until she was curled into herself, knees drawn up and her arms wrapped tight around her middle as if she could physically hold the pieces together.Ho
Author’s Pov“ I don't know, Mia. I’ve just been feeling so sick. “ Aurelia dropped her tired body on the soft mattress and fell back. She did not even had the strength to sit straighten up and just sank onto the bed. The silk sheets were cool against her bare legs. Exhaustion pressed down on her like a physical weight. She had been feeling down and sick. Days of strange nausea, bone deep tiredness and a faint dizziness that came and went. It had been happening for a month or so but she didn't give it any importance but it had gotten worse that she could not bear it anymore. She rubbed her temples and then reached for her phone.Mia picked up on the second ring. “ I don’t feel good. “ The moment Mia picked up, Aurelia spoke. “Hey, you okay?” Mia’s voice was warm and concerned, the way it always was.“I… don’t know,” Aurelia admitted softly. She gulped the lump formed in her throat, feeling the build up of saliva as if she was gonna throw up. “I’ve been feeling off. Really off. Tired
Author’s PovAurelia tiredly walked inside of the penthouse that was where she mostly lived … with Dante. Her mind was a whirlpool of emotions. The previous conversation with Vincent Salvatore was making her head spin. He had asked himself to divorce his grandson and that was what Aurelia wanted as well but why was she feeling so …. Taken aback. She felt so … upset and the thought of going away from Dante was eating her alive but she also knew he won't ever be able to love her and she could never live her whole life. She dropped her bag on the couch and sat down not knowing what to do now. Her family had abandoned her. Dante's family had never supported her. Dante never really cared. Only Vincent Salvatore was there and now he was helping her, she knew she could live her life happily and maybe could start over again. “ Why did you meet grandpa? “ she heard Dante’s cold voice and her eyes widened.
