Chapter 1: The Dark Citadel

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-07-25 08:23:37

The storm outside the mountain pass howled like a dying beast.

Dr. Lyra Sterling readjusted the strap on her leather medical kit. Her boots crunched on the ice-covered stone steps, climbing up to the obsidian gates of Vance Citadel. The air here was thin, freezing, and dense with a suffocating supernatural aura that made her inner wolf whimper in caution.

"You still have time to turn back, Doctor," Beta Marcus grunted, his heavy jaw tight as he led her through the massive iron doors. "The Alpha hasn't slept in three weeks. The silver poison in his bloodstream has driven him completely insane. He’s blinded andj violent, and his wolf is in total control. The last physician was carried out on a stretcher.

Lyra kept her chin up, masking the nervous flutter in her chest. "I’m not here to comfort him, Marcus. I’m here to neutralize the silver."

She needed the contract payout. The sanctuary she secretly ran for rogue wolf children was running out of medical supplies. If she failed tonight, ten innocent orphans would end up on the streets.

Marcus stopped before a pair of reinforced titanium doors scarred with massive claw marks. The air surrounding the threshold radiated intense heat, smelling faintly of burnt copper, ozone, and dark cedarwood.

"God help you," Marcus whispered, unlocking the heavy deadbolts and stepping back.

Lyra took a deep, steadying breath, pushed the door open, and stepped into the pitch-black chamber.

The room was vast, illuminated only by the intermittent flashes of lightning through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Furniture lay smashed across the marble floor. In the far corner, sitting atop a raised stone platform, was a massive silhouette.

Alpha Caelum Vance.

He sat shirtless, his broad torso covered in intricate scars and deep, inflamed silver wounds that glowed faintly green in the dim light. His chest rose and fell in ragged heaves. Across his eyes was a thick black cloth band, hiding his blinded gaze.

The moment the door clicked shut, Caelum’s head snapped toward her.

"I told you to leave me to rot, Marcus," Caelum growled, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the floorboards and rattled the glass windows.

"I am not Marcus, Alpha," Lyra said softly, keeping her voice steady as she set her medical case on a low table. "I am Dr. Vane. I’m here to treat your silver burns."

Caelum laughed darkly, the sound sending a cold shiver down her spine. "A female physician? Did my uncle send you to finish the job?"

In a blur of terrifying, superhuman speed, Caelum lunged off the platform.

Lyra gasped as his tall, muscular body pressed into her, hard against the cold stone wall. His large, calloused hand clamped loosely around her throat—not crushing her windpipe, but holding her in place with terrifying strength. His heat radiated off him like a furnace, drowning her senses in the scent of crushed cedar, rain, and raw male dominance.

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't snap your neck right now," Caelum hissed against her cheek, his nostrils flaring as he leaned close.

Lyra forced herself not to panic. Her hands came up, her bare palms pressing directly against his bare, silver-burned chest to push him back.

The instant her skin met his flesh, an electric shockwave exploded between them.

A blinding flare of golden light flashed behind Lyra’s eyelids. Her inner wolf—normally silent and hidden—erupted into a loud, desperate purr. Across his chest, Caelum’s silver-poisoned veins pulsed wildly.

Caelum froze. His grip on her throat slackened, his fingers trembling. His nostrils flared violently as he inhaled deep, agonizing breaths against the crook of her neck.

"What... what is this?" Caelum rasped, his voice dropping an octave into a low, animalistic purr that sent a throb straight to Lyra’s core.

He leaned down further, his lips brushing against her racing pulse point. The cloth band over his eyes couldn't hide the raw shock on his face.

"Jasmine and rain," Caelum whispered, his mouth tracing the line of her jawline. "You smell like starlight."

Lyra’s breath hitched. No. It's impossible. He’s the Obsidian King. He can't be...

"Mate," Caelum growled softly, his teeth grazing her skin in a promise that made her knees buckle. "You're my fated mate."

"When that blast went off... my heart stopped, Lyra."He leaned up, placing his forehead against hers, his hot breath fanning across her lips. The air was thick and heady with the scent of dark chocolate and cedarwood, coiling around her senses."You are my absolute world," Caelum purred, a low, animalistic sound vibr

The massive ramp of the gunship slammed down forcefully onto the helipad of the Obsidian Ridge Citadel, which lay covered in rain.As Lyra made her way through the magnificent stone hallways of the royal fortress, Caelum guided her. The War Room, which was located underground, was entered by heavy iron doors that opened. Inside, thirty of the most powerful pack generals and elders were seated around a glowing stone table.Elder Vance was a large, weathered wolf with white-silver hair who wore the regal robes of the royal house. He was serving as the head of the table. It was a massive silver signet ring that pulsated with a faint, corrupted black glow, and it was sitting on his thumb. It is Caelum! There you are, at long last! Elder Vance yelled out while bending his head ever-so-slightly, yet his dark eyes continued to fixate on Lyra with a lustful gaze. Moreover, you brought the Sun Princess!
