Chapter 19 – The Escape

The city burned, not with fire, but with data.

Screens across rooftops flashed tribunal signatures. Anonymous forums buzzed with names. Asset maps leaked in real time.

Isolde pulled the blackout curtain aside.

Down below, the street pulsed with noise cop radios, press vans, confused civilians. Velvet’s last remaining entry point had been sealed and tagged by forensics.

Vivienne stood beside her, pale but steady.

“They’re coming,” Isolde said.

“Are we running?”

“No,” she said, voice calm. “We’re evacuating.”

Dorian was already at the console. The map Penelope designed was glowing an underground rail of safe exits, false doors, service tunnels built under the club during its original construction. Never digitized. Never documented.

“Node-5’s active,” he said. “We have a twelve-minute window before that block’s cordoned off.”

Isolde pulled her jacket tight. “That’s enough.”

The plan was always brutal in its elegance: disappear not alone, but together.

Seven women waited downstairs. Three

The air was too still in the glass-walled penthouse on Madison Avenue. From the thirty-seventh floor, the city looked like a jewel box cracked open with sharp light, glittering wealth, and silent ambition. Inside the boardroom, there was no laughter. Only the soft click of expensive watches beneath tailored sleeves, the gentle slide of dossiers across a black marble table, and the expectation of blood.Dorian Blackthorn stepped through the doors like a ghost resurrected. His suit was obsidian black, as though mourning what Velvet had become. A subtle tie pin his only adornment held the shape of a fractured key. Behind him, the doors sealed with a whisper. No one stood. No one clapped. They’d already counted him out.“You’re late,” murmured Chancellor Avery Vale, crossing her legs with glacial ease. Her voice always sounded like it was dipped in gin and contempt. “Most people don’t return to the ruins they helped burn.”Dorian didn’t smile. “I built it. I decide what gets buried.”Isol

Rain streaked down the windows of the taxi as it cut through the Lower East Side. Isolde sat in the back, drenched, her hands trembling against her knees. The glow of her phone screen showed the photo again. Her flat. Her window. Lights on. No damage. But she hadn’t left the lights on.She hadn’t been there since the deposition.“Faster,” she told the driver, her voice sharper than she intended. The man nodded, muttered something in Spanish, and turned down a narrow side street to avoid traffic. Isolde’s reflection in the window looked foreign hair soaked to her scalp, mascara smudged beneath her eyes like bruises. When the cab finally stopped, she bolted out without waiting for change. Rain washed down her spine as she sprinted across the sidewalk and up the stairs two at a time. Her building was quiet, eerily so.She paused at her door.No visible damage. No sign of a break-in.She slid the key into the lock slowly. It turned too easily. The bolt hadn’t been engaged. She stepped ins

The lights in Isolde’s apartment blinked just once.It was so quick she almost missed it. A subtle flicker in the overhead filament bulb that made the shadows lurch against the plaster wall. She froze mid-step, holding a mug of untouched tea, heart pinched tight.Something was wrong. She set the cup down slowly, eyes darting to the corner desk where her laptop had been running silent background decryption on the Velvet blackbox server. The screen had gone dark. She approached. Tapped the spacebar. Nothing. She pressed again harder this time. The machine jolted to life, but the desktop was… empty.Gone were the folders: “Vivienne Recordings,” “Stage 7 Tapes,” “Internal Archive.” Even her dummy shell accounts were wiped. A blinking terminal window remained open in the bottom corner, as if to mock her.ACCESS: REVOKEDSESSION TERMINATED. TRACE LEVEL: 9PROTOCOL: SANDGLASS ENGAGEDA slow, crawling chill climbed her spine.Sandglass wasn’t her protocol. It was Penelope’s.“Bitch,” Isolde w

  • Tangled In Velvet    Chapter 64 – A Spy in the System

It was a quiet morning in Dorian’s penthouse, a lie of calm, the kind that always came before fire.He stood barefoot in his office, shirt unbuttoned, sleeves rolled to the elbows, his tie dangling forgotten across the back of a leather chair. His eyes were locked on the flickering wall of monitors, surveillance feeds, encrypted transmissions, digital pulses of Velvet’s decaying kingdom.“Is this real?” he asked.“Yes,” came the reply, curt and sure. Penelope’s voice through the line was clipped with something between dread and fury. “The signal isn’t external. It’s coming from inside your system.”Dorian’s jaw tensed. “How deep?”“Deep enough.” A pause. “Someone with your biometric level or close to it.”He didn’t respond.Instead, he turned slowly toward the polished side table near the glass wall. A photo frame sat there. A rare thing in Dorian Blackthorn’s world. An image of him and Isolde, heads tilted in toward each other, their smiles faint and stolen. That moment had never bee

The air outside Velvet was thicker than smoke. It was anticipation.A cluster of journalists lingered behind velvet ropes, cameras armed with suspicion. Protesters circled like moths. And higher up, beyond the club’s discreet entry façade, the building loomed like a corpse dressed for a wake.Isolde stood just behind the tinted windows of a nondescript sedan, watching it all.Dorian sat beside her. Silent. Stone-etched. But his hand was on hers.“I thought it would feel emptier,” she murmured. He turned slightly. “It’s not empty. It’s molting.”She raised an eyebrow. “That’s an elegant word for a snake shedding its skin.”Dorian offered a shadow of a smile. “Better than calling it what it is.”“And what is that?”He looked back at the building. “A nest for the next regime.”The words hit with icy precision. They stepped out of the car and approached the front entrance this time not as predators, or prey. But as the ones holding the blade.Inside, the club was quiet. The chandeliers we

  • Tangled In Velvet    Chapter 62 – Dorian’s Gift

The dim vault stank of mildew and secrets, thick with the weight of rotted velvet and time.Cassian stood just inside the doorway, one arm wrapped around Vivienne, the other holding a matte black pistol sleek, familiar, not trembling in the slightest.Vivienne’s eyes locked with Isolde’s, wide, panicked, pleading. Her hands were bound. Blood darkened the corner of her mouth.Cassian’s voice was almost casual. “Dorian.” He said it like a curse and an old prayer. “Still playing protector. Still pretending you didn’t build half of this with me.”Dorian didn’t flinch. “Let her go.”Cassian tilted his head, like he was trying to remember what mercy was. “You came down here to find answers. You found me instead.”Isolde stepped forward. “You’ve already lost. We have everything. The ledgers. The footage. The network’s falling apart ”Cassian laughed. “You really think Wade mattered? That little performance in Velvet was the show? You haven’t even touched the inner rooms.”He yanked Vivienne
