CHAPTER 124

Nikolai closed Tiana’s door quietly and stood there for a second, his hand still on the knob. Then he turned and walked to his room at the end of the hall. He went inside, shut the door, and let out a slow breath. The room was dim, the lamp low, the bed untouched. He sat on the edge of it, leaned forward, and laced his fingers together.

The house was silent. And for the first time all day, so was he. He sat on the edge of the mattress, feeling it dip under his weight. The phone emer

CHAPTER 127Nikolai arrived exactly twenty-eight minutes later, parking the Range Rover in the circular driveway and taking the front steps two at a time. Maria opened the door before he could knock. "She's in the study, Mr. Nikolai." He found Eva standing behind the desk, the papers spread out like a battle plan. She looked triumphant, energized in a way that made his skin crawl. "These are the divorce terms," she said without preamble, gesturing to the documents. "Everything we discussed. Tiana gets ten million, you get full custody of Pascal, and the unborn child transfers to you after two years. Fair. Generous. Clean." Nikolai picked up the papers, scanning the first page. Legalese swam before his eyes — whereas and heretofore and party of the first part. He flipped to the second page, the third, reading the terms in detail. Then he started laughing. It was a low, dark sound that started in his chest and built until his shoulders shook. He set the papers down, still chucklin

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 126

CHAPTER 126 The studio was all white. Natural light poured through floor-to-ceiling windows. Indy stood on a raised platform in the center, wearing the third outfit of the morning, a structured blazer dress in midnight blue with geometric cutouts along the ribs. "Turn," Renata commanded from her perch on a velvet stool, one leg crossed over the other, sketchpad balanced on her knee. Indy pivoted slowly, arms slightly raised. "The waist needs to come in," she murmured, making quick marks on her sketch. "And the hem, it's pulling. Gabriela, pins." Her assistant rushed forward with a pincushion strapped to her wrist. She knelt beside Indy, adjusting the fabric with expert fingers, inserting pins with quick, precise movements. Indy's phone buzzed in her purse across the room. She glanced toward it instinctively. "Eyes forward, darling," Renata said without looking up. "We're not finished." The ringing stopped. Indy exhaled and refocused on the mirror ahead, studying her reflection

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 125

CHAPTER 125 Eva Toriaga stood at the window of the mansion's sunlit study, phone pressed to her ear, watching frost melt on the garden paths below. "Harold," she said into the phone, her voice crisp and commanding. "I need you here within the hour. We have business to finalize." The lawyer's response crackled through the speaker. Eva cut him off. "No. Not over the phone. In person. This requires your complete attention." She ended the call without waiting for agreement and set the phone on the mahogany desk. Outside, a gardener raked dead leaves from beneath the bare oak trees. The grounds looked skeletal in winter, stripped down to essentials. Good. She preferred things without ornamentation, without the soft lies of spring and summer. Tiana needed to go. The terms needed to be ironclad. And she needed it done before Nikolai found his spine. Fifty minutes later, the doorbell chimed. Eva didn't answer it herself — that's what staff were for. But she was waiting in the study wh

He scrolled through his contacts, past business associates and family members, until he found the name he needed: Locke McNeil. The private investigator had worked for him before when he needed background checks on potential business partners for Hartwell. He was the kind of man who understood that some questions were better left unasked, and some answers better left unspoken.Nikolai's thumbs moved across the screen:Need to m

CHAPTER 123 Nikolai pushed open the door to Pascal’s room quietly. Pascal was already in his pajamas, sitting cross-legged on the bed, brushing his teeth with exaggerated concentration, foam at the corners of his mouth. Nikolai leaned against the doorframe. “Ready for bed?” Pascal nodded vigorously, toothbrush still in his mouth. He spat into the small bucket beside the bed, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and grinned. “Are you really home?” “I am really home,” Nikolai said. “Come on. Let’s brush properly.” Pascal hopped off the bed and followed Nikolai into the attached bathroom. The sink was child-height, a step stool already in place. Nikolai handed him a fresh toothbrush and squeezed toothpaste onto it. They stood side by side in front of the mirror. Pascal on the stool, Nikolai bending slightly at the waist, brushing in unison. Pascal mumbled around the brush, “Dad?” “Hmm?” “One of our teachers said today that it’s not too early to start earning our own money.

  • Tastes Like Damn Chocolate    Chapter 122

CHAPTER 122 Ryan and Tiana kept looking at the garden in silence. The box of chocolates rested open between them on the bench, half-empty already, wrappers scattered like small silver flags of surrender. Tiana had eaten three bars with quiet, almost desperate enjoyment; Ryan had matched her pace, though his appetite wasn’t for chocolate. He looked at her deeply. The fading bruises around her temple, the way her left leg hung limp in the brace, the wheelchair that still felt like an intruder in her life. She stared at the frozen fountain, fingers absently tracing the armrest, lost in thought. “You’re doing better than you think,” he said quietly. Tiana glanced at him, a small, tired smile tugging at her lips. “I don’t feel like it.” “You are,” Ryan insisted. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, voice low and steady. “Take it slowly, T. One day at a time. One step, even if it’s just an inch forward with that brace on. But fight. Fight like the warrior I know you are.” She looke
