It had been one whole week since that dinner. Wedding invitation samples covered the table. Jenna, my best friend, sat across from me while Alex sat close beside me, his arm slung over the back of my chair, and I kept playing my part, pushing forward with the wedding plans as though nothing had changed.

“Tell me again why I let you two plan my wedding?” I said.

Jenna looked up from the laptop balanced on her knees. “Because I'm your best friend, we’ve been inseparable since college, and somewhere along the line I realized you have terrible taste.”

I gasped. Alex laughed beside me.

“See?” Jenna pointed at him. “Your fiancé agrees with me.”

“Alex has terrible taste too,” I said.

“Careful,” he said, pulling me closer against his chest. “I gave you the good side of the bed.”

“And that makes you an expert on wedding planning?” I said, pulling away.

“Absolutely.”One side of his mouth lifted higher than the other.

That was the strange thing about betrayal. Alex still looked like the man I’d fallen in love with. Betrayal doesn’t change the face of the person sitting beside you, and for a minute I wished I hadn’t spent the last few days learning things about him I couldn’t unlearn. I wanted, badly, to just be happy, planning my wedding and letting myself enjoy it.

“So,” Jenna said, turning the laptop towards us, “I’ve narrowed the venues down to three.”

Alex leaned forward squinting at the screen. I stayed where I was, my mind drifting back to the conversation with Zara. The meal Zara had made him. The lunch he’d claimed was with James.

And here I was, planning my wedding with this same man, listening to Jenna complain about floral arrangements as if my entire relationship hadn’t shifted beneath my feet.

“Eloise?”

I blinked. “What?”

Jenna's brows furrowed. “I asked which one you liked.”

“Oh.” I looked at the screen. “The second one.”

“You didn’t even look,” she said.

“Come on, I did.”

“You looked at it for just three seconds.”

“Yeah, three very meaningful seconds.”

Alex laughed. Jenna threw a cushion at me, and I caught it, and for a few minutes everything felt normal. Jenna talked about the guest list, Alex interrupted her twice, and I found myself actually laughing.

It unsettled me how naturally my body leaned toward him, how when his hand settled on my thigh my first instinct wasn’t to move it. My body still wanted him, still craved his touch, and our old intimacy, and hating myself for it didn't make the wanting stop.

“By the way,” Jenna said, closing the laptop, “I need to meet the florist tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” I asked.

“Yes, Tomorrow.”

“Alex glanced at her. “Six work?”

“Six? For what?” I said as I looked between them.

“The venue needs the decoration details confirmed before the weekend,” Jenna explained. “I’ll handle the flowers. Alex can handle the payment and contract stuff.”

I looked at Alex. “You two better pick something I’d like. I don’t trust your judgment.”

“Relax babe, I got you,” he said, kissing my forehead.

I smiled. Jenna reached across the table for her keys and at the same moment Alex reached for a pen that had rolled near them, their fingers brushing. Neither reacted, but I noticed the way he pulled his hands back a beat too slow.

Stop reading into everything. I told myself. He’s just being polite.

“Good, I’ll send you the address,” Jenna said, already heading for the door, keys shoved in her pocket.

She was so happy being my wedding planner, and I didn't want her to know what had been happening. It would break something in her too, I thought, not just for me.

I’d protected Jenna from things before, my mother diagnosis, the two months I nearly failed out of my licensing program, because that was simply what I did for the people I loved. Carried it myself so they wouldn’t have to.

Jenna really didn’t need to know yet.

TWO DAYS LATER,

Silence had settled over my office for more than thirty minutes. Zara hadn’t moved much, her arms folded loosely across her stomach.

“Something’s changed,” she finally said.

I looked up. “What do you mean?”

“Alex.” Her fingers gripped her arm.

The name still did something strange to me. I kept my voice casual. “What about him?”

“He feels distracted lately. He’s physically there, but it’s like his mind is somewhere else.” Her thumb moved slowly back and forth against her arm as she spoke.

I made a small note. A pattern was starting to shape up.

“Have you asked him?”

“He says he’s busy.”

“Could he simply be overwhelmed with work?” I questioned.

“Maybe.”

The word had no conviction behind it.

The silence stretched, filled only by the distant murmur of voices and a car horn drifting in through the window, neither of us willing to break it.

“No,” she said finally, “I don’t think that’s it.”

I sat up straighter. “Why?”

“This feels different.”

I leaned back slightly, taking a note as the suspense within me built. “And what makes you think he is different?”

She hesitated. “I think he’s seeing someone.”

Another woman, I thought.

“I saw a message while I was with him this afternoon.” She added.

Alex came home to me, then went to Zara, and now there's a third name in the rotation. “What message?” I asked

She was quiet for a moment. “I didn’t read all of it. His phone was beside him, It lit up with a notification, and I caught the first line before he snatched it away.”

I kept my expression calm. “What did it say?”

Zara's lips parted. “It said, I wish you were here with me right now, baby.”

Inside me, everything had gone still. This message wasn’t for Zara. It wasn’t for me either. Which left exactly one question: who was it for?

I wanted to ask who had sent it, what time it came in, whether he’d looked nervous when he grabbed the phone away from her, but that was too many questions for one session.

A good therapist would have let the silence do its work give.. , but in the moment I wasn’t her therapist anymore, I was just a woman collecting evidence, wearing my license like a disguise.

I wrote in the corner of my notepad.

Time. Find out.

Eloise povZara came back on a Tuesday, five days after the arrest. I had referred her the day before to a colleague named Dr. Reyes, who was good with trauma and good with betrayal. His office was just down the street. I’d sent the paperwork, copied my supervisor, and closed her file. Every rule I had ever sworn to follow said I should never be in a room with her again.“Ms. Ellis is here,” my secretary said over the intercom. “She doesn’t have an appointment.”I looked at the closed folder on my desk for a while. “Send her in.”She came in wearing a pink dress. The ribbon was back in her hair. The version of Zara I had sat across from for weeks always looked one bad night away from breaking. This one looked rested. Her skin was clear and her shoulders sat low and easy. She closed the door, crossed to the chair she always used, sat down, and crossed her ankles. She smelled faintly of jasmine. I noticed my own hands, one flat on the folder, the other gripping the arm of my chair.“I

Alex POVFinally it was Thursday. The day I had spent three years waiting for. A long glass table and nine faces I had spent six months learning.I wore the navy suit Eloise had bought me. The watch Eloise gave me was back on my wrist, and the shoes Jenna had gotten me were on my feet. A man with something to hide doesn’t wear the gift his fiancée gave him, so I wore it on purpose.Bennett sat at the head of the table with his hands folded. He nodded once when I came in. Warm, almost fond.I gave them everything they needed to know in ten minutes: the projected returns, the fee structure, the custodian arrangement, the ten-year forecast, and the endorsement page with the Bennett name printed across the top.I’ve done it enough times that my voice does the work while the rest of me watches the room. Harold Weiss, Mr. Bennett's best friend had his arms crossed fully invested in my work. I knew he’d already decided to make the first move.“If there are no questions,” I said, “I’d like to

“Everything came back negative, Ms. Bennett. You’re clear.” Dana said it twice, the way people do when they know how long a second can be.“Thank you. Thank you so much,” I said, thanking a stranger for handing my own body back to me.Then I walked into the staff restroom, locked the door, and sat on the closed lid of the toilet with both hands over my mouth until the shaking ran out. Clear. The word kept running. I was clear, and Zara wasn’t, and the man responsible was living his normal life. I had spent the past days being clever. I had watched, and listened, and kept my face still, and it had never occurred to me to be afraid. That was the part that came in now. Cold and late, like finding the crack in a floor.I had waited long enough. I stood up and washed my hands. The water ran hot over my palm. I looked at the woman in the mirror. She looked nothing like Dr. Eloise. She looked like a woman who had let her guard down for a man who manipulated her and used her. Her lipstick

I had told Zara to come the next morning, she arrived ten minutes late, which was very unlike her. Her hair pulled back carelessly and her eyes swollen, the lids pink and heavy.“I told him,” she said, sitting down heavily. “Not about the results. Just that I thought he might have been with someone else,”My brows drew together. “How did that go?”“He didn’t get angry.” She frowned, like she was still replaying the moment, looking for the part that made sense. “He just asked me a question. He said, when was the last time you were with someone else? Who did you have before me?Something hot and tight twisted in my chest. “He turned it around on you?” I said.“I guess. I don’t know. He said it so calmly, like it was a fair thing to ask. He kept stirring his coffee the whole time, slow little circles, and he never once looked away from me.” She shook her head. “It threw me off. I ended up apologizing to him. Can you believe that? I apologized.”I could believe it because I had spent thre

Zara was already in the waiting room when I arrived, ten minutes before I even unlocked my office door. She sat with her knees pressed together and her handbag clutched in her lap like something that might be taken from her.Her blue dress was wrinkled, and there were faint shadows beneath her eyes, the kind that come from a night spent staring at the ceiling.“You’re early,” I said.“I just couldn’t sit at home.”She followed me down the hall, her heels tapping the tile in a quick, nervous rhythm. I unlocked the door and let her in first. I flicked on the desk lamp and the light threw pale stripes across the carpet. I offered her water, and she took the glass with both hands, as if it might slip away from her.The room smelled of the last traces of the lavender candle I’d lit the evening before. The clock on the wall ticked loudly in the stillness. She sat down across from me and her hands stayed knotted in her lap.“I haven’t been with anyone else,” she said, before I’d even opened

Lucienne sat between a bookshop and a florist, behind a green door with a brass handle worn smooth by years of hands. Inside, it was cool and quiet and smelled like butter and lemon. Soft jazz drifted from somewhere near the kitchen, and the clink of cutlery followed it.The hostess, a young woman in a black apron, looked up with a bright smile. “Table for one?”I’m actually hoping to see the dining room,” I said. My fiancé and I are thinking of celebrating our anniversary here.”It was the lie people tell every day. It slid out clean. It scared me a little how easily it came.“Of course let me show you.”She led me through the dining room, past white tablecloths and low candles, and out into a courtyard where a small stone fountain trickled in the center. Ivy climbed the walls. String lights hung overhead, unlit in the daylight.“This is our most requested spot,” the hostess said, gesturing to a corner booth tucked against the tile. A small brass lamp shaped as a shell glowed beside
