Chapter 1

There was no screaming or hysterics like I thought there would be.

Silence settled over the room.

I slipped the wedding band from my finger and set it gently on the table.

When I spoke, my voice was calm and clear, completely devoid of emotion.

"Keep the ring. I'll have the dowry returned as well. As for the wedding, whether you cancel it or go through with it together, that's up to you."

I turned and walked away without even asking why. Then, something crashed onto the floor behind me.

Marcel tumbled off the bed. Staggering forward, he dropped to his knees at my feet with his fists clenched.

"Cedric, I'm sorry... I'm the one who deserves blame. I forced Delilah into this. You’ve always been the only one she truly loved.

"Hit me. Kill me if you want. Just... don't act like you don't care."

Delilah hurriedly gathered the clothes from the floor and draped them over his shoulders before getting on her knees beside him. Nevertheless, what spilled from her lips wasn't guilt but overwhelming concern for him.

"No, Cedric. This is all my fault. Ever since we were kids, Marcel has always been the person who's cared about you most. I'm the one who seduced him.

"If you want to hate someone, hate me. Blame me. Take it all out on me."

My legs felt as heavy as lead. With a vacant gaze, I turned back numbly and looked down at the two people I'd once treasured most.

I still remembered the first pair of sneakers I ever owned. Marcel had secretly bought them for me.

I'd always been soft-hearted. Whenever people bullied me, I'd just endure it. However, no matter how many people stood on the other side, Marcel would always stand up for me.

He also had a camera he treasured more than anything. Inside were photographs of every important moment in my life: graduation, birthday celebrations, and the day I won first place in a speech contest.

He did all of it for one reason—because I was his best friend.

As for Delilah...

She had initiated our first kiss. Blushing furiously, she'd risen onto her toes and wrapped her arms carefully around my waist.

I had a sensitive stomach, so she’d always sneak little snacks into my bag, and in her phone notes, she kept track of all my dietary restrictions and preferences.

When I failed an interview and got drunk, crying that I was a failure after all, she stayed up all night without saying a word, helping me revise my resume line by line until dawn.

She did all of it for one reason. It was because, in her eyes, I was her hero.

I used to believe I was the luckiest man in the world, but now, the two people I loved most were on their knees before me.

Who was I supposed to blame?

Who could I possibly blame?

  • Tears at Midnight   Chapter 9

Delilah headed straight for her destination. On a street scented with red wine and cinnamon, she paced back and forth in hesitation, unable to summon the courage to walk into my office on her own, into that closed-off world that belonged only to me.Fortunately, as snow drifted softly through the Nordic winter, she spotted me leaving the building surrounded by my colleagues. After saying goodbye to everyone, I turned and noticed her familiar figure. Surprise flickered across my face for only a moment before fading into calm indifference. When Delilah caught my gaze, she awkwardly started to raise a hand, but I merely gave her a polite nod, the same one I would offer a stranger. She felt even less willing to approach. For a long time afterward, she only dared follow me from a distance. When I was about to miss the bus, she hurried ahead, intending to flag it down for me. Then she realized I was perfectly capable of waving the driver over myself. When a drunk man staggered toward m

A few days passed before Delilah and Marcel finally gave up searching. Then they moved in together. It was something they had once wanted more than anything. No more secrecy or looking over their shoulders, yet something felt wrong.Whenever Delilah bought breakfast, she still instinctively ordered enough for three people. The antacids she no longer needed to carry were still tucked inside her purse. When she picked Marcel up from work, the car's navigation system would automatically suggest Cedric's office as its first destination.Marcel wasn't any different. Whenever he ordered coffee, he instinctively chose extra sugar because that was how Cedric liked it.Even though he loved spicy food, he still caught himself asking for the mild version because Cedric could never handle anything too hot.Whenever they passed a collectible shop, he'd automatically buy an entire box of figurines, only to remember there was no longer anyone waiting excitedly to unwrap them. The two of them

The thin sheet of paper trembled in the silence for a long time, like the final echo of a departing voice.Tears finally broke free from Marcel's lashes and splashed onto the letter, landing atop tear stains that had already dried there."Cedric..." Marcel's fingers tightened around the page until his knuckles turned white.Delilah stared at the neat handwriting covering the letter, her chest filling with an indescribable ache. The man who had always listened to them, who had grinned foolishly and declared himself the happiest person in the world, had been forced by their betrayal to grow wings. The very first thing he did after learning to fly was leave them forever. How could Cedric do this? How could he... really leave?"Don't panic. I'll go find him right now. Maybe he's just hiding somewhere, sulking." Delilah forced a smile as she lifted a hand, intending to wipe away Marcel's tears. However, when her gaze landed on the neat handwriting that looked so much like Cedric him

Gone?Delilah stood frozen, unable to process what she'd just heard.Wasn't today supposed to be the wedding Cedric had been looking forward to more than anything? Why would he leave?Marcel's eyes were vacant as he repeated in a hoarse voice, "Cedric... he's gone... He's really gone."Something seemed to click into place, and Delilah's hands slowly curled into fists."Gone where? Today's our wedding day. Where could he possibly go? Go find him! The wedding still has to happen!"The bridesmaids were frantic.Delilah and Marcel, however, remained unusually silent. They finally understood that Cedric's forgiveness had all been an act. He had never intended to go through with the wedding."Wait, you're saying he's not the groom? That can't be right. We didn't do the wrong makeup, did we? We can't afford a mistake like that!" Panicking, the makeup artist pulled out her phone and opened the wedding planning group chat.Indeed, Cedric was the one who confirmed every detail, but the

Knock, knock, knock...Still half asleep, Marcel opened the door. When he saw it was the makeup artist, he glanced at the time. "Do I need makeup too?""Of course, you do. You have to be the most handsome man today!"Lugging an enormous case, the makeup artist squeezed past him and hurried inside to set up.The photographer assigned to follow the wedding party immediately began checking his equipment as well.Marcel still hadn't fully processed what was happening. He was about to point out that the groom was supposed to be the most handsome man there, not him.Still, a secret possessiveness stirred in his heart. Lowering his gaze, he forced a smile and said nothing.Following the wedding team's instructions, he headed into the bathroom to change into his suit. The moment he saw it, though, he froze. "Um... are you sure you didn't grab the wrong outfit?"It didn't look anything like a best man's suit. In fact, it looked exactly like the tuxedo he'd modeled for Cedric the day be

When I got home, the house was pitch black.Standing alone in the darkness, I sent Delilah a text.[One of my colleagues asked me to come over and watch the game. It's getting late, so I won't be coming home tonight.]Her reply came almost immediately.[Okay. But don't stay up too late. Your stomach's been acting up, so you have to get up and eat breakfast tomorrow morning.]There was none of her usual prying.I knew Delilah wouldn't be coming home that night, so I pulled out my suitcase and started packing. After sitting alone in the living room until dawn, I took a cab straight to the bridal boutique."Cedric, you're here. Have you had breakfast? I brought you some bread."The moment I walked in, Delilah and Marcel came over to greet me, drawing envious looks from the staff."What a lucky groom you are! Your fiancee and your best friend got here ages ago and have been waiting for you."At that title, Marcel's face instantly turned pale.Delilah noticed the change in his e
