Chapter 2

Author: Amber Fleck
Serena blushed instantly.

Frederick, who had been responsible for taking notes, could no longer contain himself and chided, "Nonsense! After you stabbed Dr. Sheldon, Captain Jensen felt guilty and took care of him to plead for mercy on your behalf. She was afraid that you would end up in prison if Dr. Sheldon filed a lawsuit against you.

"After you disappeared, Captain Jensen used up all her annual leave just to look for your whereabouts. Even when Dr. Sheldon came to the station to see her, it was to inquire about your situation."

"You vanished for three years, and Captain Jensen was not getting any younger. Her mother had been bedridden for many years, and her greatest wish was to see Captain Jensen get married. Out of compassion, Dr. Sheldon suggested to Captain Jensen that they hold a fake wedding to please her mother," Frederick added.

Serena gave a long sigh and turned around.

Frederick was heartbroken, and his fingers almost reached my face. "Because we could not find you for so long and Dr. Sheldon was single, we persuaded Captain Jensen to marry Dr. Sheldon and give him the commitment he deserved. You accused Captain Jensen of something so disgraceful. Channing, you really made a huge mistake."

Serena looked sad. "Channing, do you know the other reason Myles and I held a fake wedding?"

She walked up to me and slammed her wedding ring heavily on the table. "Myles said you hated him and did not want a misunderstanding to create a rift between us, so he tried to lure you out through the wedding. Myles designed the entire wedding setup according to your preferences. The suit you had chosen and the diamond ring you had ordered were all prepared backstage, just waiting for you to appear."

Serena continued, "As for Myles himself, he walked through the ceremony with me in a cheap rented suit and a prop ring bought at a wholesale price. You did not show up. He even posted the wedding video online, hoping you would see it and come back."

The livestream chat was flooded with comments again.

[I saw that video before! I was wondering why the groom was dressed so shabbily. Even his ring was too big.]

[Many people were mocking him in the comments, saying he married a bride who did not love him and even showed off online.]

[I was one of those who mocked him back then, and now I know the truth... I am such an idiot.]

When I looked at the wedding ring, I could not help but recall three years ago when Serena had accepted my proposal. I had also graduated with a master's degree and been offered a better job. My father's condition had also improved, and he would be able to be discharged from the hospital soon.

Immersed in happiness and beautiful dreams for the future, I called Myles. "Dude, Serena said yes to my proposal! You are my best friend, will you be my best man? I want you to share the luck and find a girlfriend soon!"

Myles agreed with a chuckle.

After I hung up, the first thing I chose before Serena's wedding dress was Myles' best man outfit.

If I had not seen that scene, the wedding ring that should have been on my ring finger would have become handcuffs binding me.

The woman who once nestled in my arms, saying that marrying me meant marrying happiness, was now against me, forcing me to reveal the whereabouts of the culprit who destroyed everything. "Channing, tell me where Myles is if you have any conscience."

I squeezed my eyes shut, but a tear still found its way down my cheek. "A-3-2 of the funeral parlor. You will find what you are looking for there."

During her imprisonment, Serena visited me every month. She relocated my father's grave and planted a small pine tree beside it. Every month, apart from the fresh news from the outside world, she brought me a branch of pine."Channing, behave well. I am waiting for you outside."I did not want her to waste her time on me and avoided seeing her for several consecutive months. She chose to write to me instead. Occasionally, her letter contained our old photos. When I looked at our innocent smiles in the photo, I still could not help feeling emotional.Serena wrote a caption beside the photo.[Channing, our lives have just happened to take a detour. Give me a chance to correct it and bring us back on the right track, okay? Even if this detour is long and will take a lifetime to correct it, I am willing to do it.]I stroked our two smiling faces in the photo and eventually did not refuse.Life in prison was simple. I chose to learn a skill.Due to my good performance, I received

When I came to my senses, I had already clutched the monster's neck. The next second, a tremendous force toppled me, making me slam onto the ground. Violent slaps were then delivered to my face one after another."Channing, what possible options do you have? Did you not do what you considered criminal for your own selfish desires? Go find your police officer girlfriend. Turn yourself in and beg for forgiveness."I was knocked unconscious. The next three years were like hell on earth. Because I refused to follow their assigned tasks, I received a beating every day. All the dirty deeds they had done were also pinned on me.Even if I returned home, I could not escape imprisonment.Myles even called me. "Channing, you cannot go back anyway; how about submitting to us? Your father is dead, and Serena has married me. What do you have to hold on to? Life goes on. Why do you have to trouble yourself?"I just replied, "Myles, karma is always a b*tch."Fate did not keep me waiting for lon

Myles was too forceful, and his bandaged abdomen immediately started bleeding again.Serena immediately rang the emergency call bell. The doctor arrived quickly.Amidst the chaos, Serena handcuffed my wrists. "Channing, have you not hurt Myles enough? Now you even came to the hospital to threaten him? Myles was so kind to you. How could you do such a thing?"I immediately burst into tears, but my throat felt like it was being squeezed, and not a single word could come out. I could only shake my head helplessly.Myles' injury assessment report was quickly released.Because he avoided all the vital organs, he was fine. Now, Serena took out this assessment report again. Trembling, she asked, "Channing, you have no medical knowledge; how could you avoid all the vital organs? It was not you who stabbed Myles. It was Myles who held your hand and stabbed himself, right?"As soon as she said that, the livestream comment section was instantly in an uproar.[What a plot twist. Why did D

I looked at Myles in disbelief. "This is the woman in bed 15. She was not seriously ill at all and was chatting with my dad last night. The nurse who did the rounds before bedtime asked her if she wanted to sign the organ donation agreement. She did not want to sign at first, but she was superstitious and thought that signing it might help her get better. She ended up passing away this morning. Myles, was it you..."Seeing the familiar face turn pale, my eyes instantly reddened.Myles sighed. "Channing, I have been so kind to you. Why do you think so badly of me? She signed the agreement voluntarily. I merely took her organs according to her wishes and made some profit from them. She alone could have saved at least five lives, and I am the savior of the other five people."I interrupted him sharply. "But you killed her. You killed a living person. You committed murder; it is a crime."Myles raised his hands in a surrendering gesture innocently. "But it was all their own choice. She

The next time I saw Serena was in the meeting room.Through the glass, she looked even more haggard than I was, who was about to be executed the next day."Channing, it is my fault." Serena's hand holding the phone was shaking. "I will find a lawyer for you right away. How about you appeal to the court?"I shook my head with a smile. "What is the point in talking about this now? I am still going to die eventually."Perhaps the word "die" triggered her. Serena shook her head wildly. "No. It is different, Channing. It is different. Why did I not notice earlier? If I had noticed earlier, would things not have turned out this way?"Serena sobbed uncontrollably, like a child. "Channing, I am truly trash that betrayed you. Everything is my fault. I will not let this end like this. Channing, I will make this right."The meeting time was up. Serena put down the receiver and staggered out.The next day, I was not taken to the execution ground; instead, I was sent back to the interrogatio
