Chapter 3

Author: Amber Fleck
The police acted quickly and immediately locked down the scene. However, they did not find Myles' ashes inside after opening the locker; there was only a thin folder.

Serena threw the folder in front of me. "Channing, are you deliberately stalling for time?"

Frederick tried to persuade her. "Captain Jensen, let me handle the interrogation. Dr. Sheldon is likely still alive. You should send the others to search for Dr. Sheldon's whereabouts. Continuing the interrogation might delay the best rescue time for Dr. Sheldon."

Just as Serena hesitated, I raised my chin toward her. "Have you looked at the documents inside?"

Serena put on her gloves and opened them.

Inside the folder was a voluntary organ donation agreement. There were dark red bloodstains at the edges of the paper, but they were far less eye-catching than my father's trembling signature.

Serena frowned. "Channing, what is the meaning of this? Do you think Mr. Jones signed the agreement under Myles' coercion? I was there at the time. The situation was not what you think. Myles did not even bring this agreement. The nurse on rounds just mentioned it, and Mr. Jones voluntarily proposed to sign it."

I could no longer control my emotions. "My dad signed voluntarily? Serena, your five years as a criminal investigator were for nothing."

For the first time, the tide of opinion in the livestream chat began to turn.

[Could Dr. Sheldon have tricked Channing's father into signing the organ donation agreement and deliberately caused the surgery to fail?]

[It is terrifying to think about. If that is true, I can understand why Channing killed him. Who could stay rational in that situation?]

[Did he not also kill four other people? As far as I know, the identities of those four victims all seem related to the organ donation lead. It feels like we are getting close to the truth.]

[Putting myself in Channing's shoes is devastating. His best friend killed his father for profit, and his girlfriend, the head of the criminal investigation team, even married his best friend. Even after avenging himself, he still ended up being interrogated by his own girlfriend and forced to admit his guilt. This is too cruel.]

Serena also noticed the comments. Her expression sank, and she was about to argue.

The interrogation room door was suddenly kicked open. "Captain Jensen! Major discovery! Channing operated overseas for years. Based on the clues, we can deduce that he was involved in human organ trafficking!"

This statement hit like a bolt from the blue.

Serena glared at me, almost grinding her teeth. "Channing, your acting is superb. I almost fell for it. You brainwashed Mr. Jones into signing the agreement, did you not? You trafficked human organs and even sacrificed your own father to pin the blame on Myles. Have you no humanity?"

The livestream chat erupted in a massive uproar.

[Holy crap, Channing was the mastermind behind the human organ trafficking?]

[So he persuaded his own father to sign the donation agreement beforehand. After Dr. Sheldon had the patients sign it, he killed all the doctors involved and pinned the blame on them. There will be no way to prove anything.]

[Gosh, how heartless. Watch out for your enemies, but watch out for your friends even more.]

When I looked at those comments, I almost laughed myself to tears.

Serena almost collapsed. "Channing, do you not have anything to explain?"

I wiped my eyes. "What is there to explain? You already convicted me, did you not?"

Frederick abruptly stood up. "Take Channing back to the detention center. Everyone, set out now to search for Dr. Sheldon."

Serena did not move.

As I was escorted past her, she hesitated as she extended her hand, but she said nothing in the end.

After 48 hours of intensive searching by the police, some of Myles' remains were finally found in another grave near my father's at the funeral parlor. He was curled up, all four limbs and his spine broken. Only upon close inspection could one discern that he was kneeling.

Frederick's eyes instantly reddened. "Channing is a monster."

Serena even fainted immediately.

The forensic pathologist announced after the autopsy, "All of the victim's organs have been removed."

I did not lie about not knowing where Myles was because every part of him was in a different place.

Occasionally, her letter contained our old photos. When I looked at our innocent smiles in the photo, I still could not help feeling emotional.Serena wrote a caption beside the photo.[Channing, our lives have just happened to take a detour. Give me a chance to correct it and bring us back on the right track, okay? Even if this detour is long and will take a lifetime to correct it, I am willing to do it.]I stroked our two smiling faces in the photo and eventually did not refuse.Life in prison was simple. When I came to my senses, I had already clutched the monster's neck. The next second, a tremendous force toppled me, making me slam onto the ground. Violent slaps were then delivered to my face one after another."Channing, what possible options do you have? Did you not do what you considered criminal for your own selfish desires? Go find your police officer girlfriend. Turn yourself in and beg for forgiveness."I was knocked unconscious. The next three years were like hell on earth. Because I refused to follow their assigned tasks, I received a beating every day. All the dirty deeds they had done were also pinned on me.Even if I returned home, I could not escape imprisonment.Myles even called me. "Channing, you cannot go back anyway; how about submitting to us? Your father is dead, and Serena has married me. What do you have to hold on to? Life goes on. Why do you have to trouble yourself?"I just replied, "Myles, karma is always a b*tch."Fate did not keep me waiting for lon

Myles was too forceful, and his bandaged abdomen immediately started bleeding again.Serena immediately rang the emergency call bell. The doctor arrived quickly.Amidst the chaos, Serena handcuffed my wrists. "Channing, have you not hurt Myles enough? Now you even came to the hospital to threaten him? Myles was so kind to you. How could you do such a thing?"I immediately burst into tears, but my throat felt like it was being squeezed, and not a single word could come out. I could only shake my head helplessly.Myles' injury assessment report was quickly released.Because he avoided all the vital organs, he was fine. Now, Serena took out this assessment report again. Trembling, she asked, "Channing, you have no medical knowledge; how could you avoid all the vital organs? It was not you who stabbed Myles. It was Myles who held your hand and stabbed himself, right?"As soon as she said that, the livestream comment section was instantly in an uproar.[What a plot twist. Why did D

I looked at Myles in disbelief. "This is the woman in bed 15. She was not seriously ill at all and was chatting with my dad last night. The nurse who did the rounds before bedtime asked her if she wanted to sign the organ donation agreement. She did not want to sign at first, but she was superstitious and thought that signing it might help her get better. She ended up passing away this morning. Myles, was it you..."Seeing the familiar face turn pale, my eyes instantly reddened.Myles sighed. "Channing, I have been so kind to you. Why do you think so badly of me? She signed the agreement voluntarily. I merely took her organs according to her wishes and made some profit from them. She alone could have saved at least five lives, and I am the savior of the other five people."I interrupted him sharply. "But you killed her. You killed a living person. You committed murder; it is a crime."Myles raised his hands in a surrendering gesture innocently. "But it was all their own choice. She

The next time I saw Serena was in the meeting room.Through the glass, she looked even more haggard than I was, who was about to be executed the next day."Channing, it is my fault." Serena's hand holding the phone was shaking. "I will find a lawyer for you right away. How about you appeal to the court?"I shook my head with a smile. "What is the point in talking about this now? I am still going to die eventually."Perhaps the word "die" triggered her. Serena shook her head wildly. "No. It is different, Channing. It is different. Why did I not notice earlier? If I had noticed earlier, would things not have turned out this way?"Serena sobbed uncontrollably, like a child. "Channing, I am truly trash that betrayed you. Everything is my fault. I will not let this end like this. Channing, I will make this right."The meeting time was up. Serena put down the receiver and staggered out.The next day, I was not taken to the execution ground; instead, I was sent back to the interrogatio
