Chapter 4

Author: Amber Fleck
When the trial resumed, Serena was dressed in black. She sat in the audience along with other family members of the victims.

I lowered my gaze and listened to the prosecutor's presentation. "The defendant, Channing Jones, committed five intentional homicide acts, all resulting in the immediate death of the victims. Additionally, he trafficked human organs more than 480 times within 3 years, causing an extremely negative social impact. Defendant, you may now present your defense."

I remained silent.

The audience seats erupted in a chorus of insults.

"What is there for him to defend? He is truly a disgrace to society."

"My daughter studied hard for 20 years, enduring hardships to become a good doctor serving the people. He not only killed my daughter, he also tried to accuse her of organ trafficking."

"Five doctors were killed. Monster. Scum. Impose the death penalty on him."

They held the portraits of the victims, agitated.

An endless sea of cameras surrounded me, and the bursts of flash were so intense they nearly blinded me.

I tried to speak, but my throat felt rusted. It was an old problem of mine; I could not make a sound when my emotions surged.

Myles knew, and Serena knew. That was why Myles would stand up for me when I was bullied as a child.

I looked in Serena's direction, but she was lost in the crowd.

Several rotten eggs and pieces of gravel flew over the barrier and hit me on the head.

Blood flowed, and my vision went completely red. I could only shake my head at the judge.

The sentencing began, and the audience erupted in cheers when I was sentenced to death.

The victims' families were emotional, hugging each other as tears streamed down their faces.

The judge asked again, "Defendant, you may appeal again if you disagree with the verdict. Do you hear me?"

I still could not speak; I could only nod and then shake my head.

The gavel slammed down, and the decision was final.

I closed my eyes tightly, thinking, "Myles, you won."

...

When Channing was led away by bailiffs, Serena instinctively tried to rush over, but she was swept away by the elated family members and led out of the courtroom.

Reporters, who had been waiting for a long time, eagerly shoved microphones at her.

"Officer Jensen, you personally apprehended the murderer of your husband. Now that you hear he has been sentenced to death, how do you feel?"

"We heard the murderer was your boyfriend of many years. What are your thoughts on his crime?"

Serena felt as if her throat was being choked; she could not utter a single syllable.

In a flash, she suddenly remembered that Channing had not said a word when he stabbed Myles. The more Channing tried to defend himself, the more he could not speak.

Serena instantly turned grim. "Go back to the station and retrieve the evidence from when Channing stabbed Myles and Myles' medical report. Hurry."

Frederick could not understand, but seeing Serena's anxiety, he dared not delay.

When Serena received the forensic report again, she dared not overlook a single word. After reading it, she roared with bloodshot eyes, "Appeal immediately. Something is wrong with Channing's case."

When I came to my senses, I had already clutched the monster's neck. The next second, a tremendous force toppled me, making me slam onto the ground. Violent slaps were then delivered to my face one after another."Channing, what possible options do you have? Did you not do what you considered criminal for your own selfish desires? Go find your police officer girlfriend. Turn yourself in and beg for forgiveness."I was knocked unconscious. The next three years were like hell on earth. Because I refused to follow their assigned tasks, I received a beating every day. All the dirty deeds they had done were also pinned on me.Even if I returned home, I could not escape imprisonment.Myles even called me. "Channing, you cannot go back anyway; how about submitting to us? Your father is dead, and Serena has married me. What do you have to hold on to? Life goes on. Myles was too forceful, and his bandaged abdomen immediately started bleeding again.Serena immediately rang the emergency call bell. The doctor arrived quickly.Amidst the chaos, Serena handcuffed my wrists. "Channing, have you not hurt Myles enough? Now you even came to the hospital to threaten him? Myles was so kind to you. How could you do such a thing?"I immediately burst into tears, but my throat felt like it was being squeezed, and not a single word could come out. I could only shake my head helplessly.Myles' injury assessment report was quickly released.Because he avoided all the vital organs, he was fine. Now, Serena took out this assessment report again. Trembling, she asked, "Channing, you have no medical knowledge; how could you avoid all the vital organs? It was not you who stabbed Myles. It was Myles who held your hand and stabbed himself, right?"As soon as she said that, the livestream comment section was instantly in an uproar.[What a plot twist. Why did D

I looked at Myles in disbelief. "This is the woman in bed 15. She was not seriously ill at all and was chatting with my dad last night. The nurse who did the rounds before bedtime asked her if she wanted to sign the organ donation agreement. She did not want to sign at first, but she was superstitious and thought that signing it might help her get better. She ended up passing away this morning. Myles, was it you..."Seeing the familiar face turn pale, my eyes instantly reddened.Myles sighed. "Channing, I have been so kind to you. Why do you think so badly of me? She signed the agreement voluntarily. I merely took her organs according to her wishes and made some profit from them. She alone could have saved at least five lives, and I am the savior of the other five people."I interrupted him sharply. "But you killed her. You killed a living person. You committed murder; it is a crime."Myles raised his hands in a surrendering gesture innocently. "But it was all their own choice. She

The next time I saw Serena was in the meeting room.Through the glass, she looked even more haggard than I was, who was about to be executed the next day."Channing, it is my fault." Serena's hand holding the phone was shaking. "I will find a lawyer for you right away. How about you appeal to the court?"I shook my head with a smile. "What is the point in talking about this now? I am still going to die eventually."Perhaps the word "die" triggered her. Serena shook her head wildly. "No. It is different, Channing. It is different. Why did I not notice earlier? If I had noticed earlier, would things not have turned out this way?"Serena sobbed uncontrollably, like a child. "Channing, I am truly trash that betrayed you. Everything is my fault. I will not let this end like this. Channing, I will make this right."The meeting time was up. Serena put down the receiver and staggered out.The next day, I was not taken to the execution ground; instead, I was sent back to the interrogatio
