Chapter 3

Author: Sweet Marmalade
That afternoon, Rachel came to take photographs.

Sophie came out of the primary bedroom, and her expression changed at once.

"Natalie, are you selling the condo?"

I closed my laptop. "Yes."

She hurried to call Marcus.

He arrived less than half an hour later.

He pushed open the door, his face dark.

"Natalie, are you finished with this tantrum?"

Rachel stood awkwardly in the living room.

I handed her a copy of the deed. "Keep taking pictures."

Marcus slapped his hand over the document.

"This is our future home!"

I looked up at him.

"My name is the only one on the deed."

He had no answer.

Standing behind him, Sophie said softly, "Is this because of me? I'll move out right now. Natalie, please don't sell the condo."

As expected, Marcus turned around to comfort her.

"This isn't your fault."

Watching them, I felt the last of my emotion disappear.

That evening, Marcus and I had been scheduled to tour a wedding venue.

I'd reserved the appointment a month earlier.

Marcus had said he wanted a small, intimate wedding.

I'd believed him.

At five that afternoon, I received a message from him.

[Can we reschedule tonight? Sophie's ex is causing trouble, and she's afraid to go to the police station alone.]

I stared at the message. The wedding-planning worksheet was still beside my hand.

It listed the number of guests from each family, our budget, backup hotels, and the navy welcome sign he liked.

I sent back a single word.

[Okay.]

In the past, I would have asked questions, felt hurt, and waited for him to come home and explain.

Not anymore. I took a cab directly to the police station.

I wasn't going there to catch him doing anything.

If Kyle truly posed a threat, then my condo's address, building access, and smart lock were all involved.

As the owner, I at least deserved to know how serious the situation was.

Outside the police station, Sophie sat on a bench with Marcus's coat draped over her shoulders.

Marcus crouched before her and patiently tied her shoelace.

When she lowered her head and cried, he pulled tissues from his pocket and wiped away her tears.

Even the officer beside them said, "Ma'am, we've filed the report. Call us if anything else happens."

But Marcus insisted on staying with her until the attorney arrived.

Standing some distance away, I suddenly remembered my mother's fall the previous year.

I'd called Marcus and asked him to come to the hospital with me.

He'd said he couldn't leave a client and told me to be strong on my own.

So I'd handled registration, payment, and my mother's wheelchair alone.

When he came home that night, all he'd said was, "That must've been exhausting."

He wasn't incapable of staying beside someone. My problems simply weren't worth putting anything down for.

Marcus finally saw me. He stood, and panic flickered across his face.

"Natalie, why are you here?"

"I was nearby."

He frowned. "Don't misunderstand. Kyle really did harass her."

I nodded. "Okay."

Sophie hurried to say, "Natalie, I can explain..."

I cut her off. "There's no need."

Marcus seemed unprepared for how calm I was.

He stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"I'll tour the wedding venue with you tomorrow, all right? Don't pressure her right now."

Tomorrow again. Our life together could always wait until tomorrow.

Her problems were always urgent.

I looked at him. "Marcus, do you remember what we were supposed to see today?"

He paused.

"Of course I remember."

"Do you remember that my endoscopy results came back last week?"

His gaze froze. He didn't remember.

Sophie suddenly pressed a hand to her chest and began breathing rapidly.

Marcus immediately turned and supported her.

"Sophie, breathe slowly. Look at me."

I stood there feeling like an unnecessary spectator.

Several minutes later, Sophie's breathing settled.

Marcus looked back at me, apology in his eyes.

"Natalie, I'll take her home first. You can get home by yourself, right?"

He said the word "home" so naturally.

But that home still wouldn't leave its door open for me tonight.

I turned and walked away.

On the way, the wedding planner called to confirm our appointment.

I said, "Cancel everything."

"Ms. Foster, the deposit may be nonrefundable."

"That's fine."

After ending the call, I contacted Rachel again.

[You can begin showings tomorrow morning.]

She asked, [There are other occupants in the condo. Will that be a problem?]

I replied, [It will be cleared tonight.]

When I returned to the building, I didn't go upstairs.

I went to the management office and printed a smart-lock administration request.

While verifying my identity, the employee asked, "You're the owner. Why aren't you the primary account holder in the system?"

I said nothing, and she stopped awkwardly.

Holding the form, I scheduled a factory reset for the following morning.

Then I opened my banking app and submitted a request to pay off the home improvement loan early.

As I saved each digital receipt into a folder, I felt strangely calm.

Some doors, once closed, are no longer worth waiting for someone inside to open.

The condo quickly entered the formal closing process. The buyers' financing was approved without delay, and Rachel asked me to return and sign the final transfer documents.Marcus came to the title office too.By the time he arrived, I was already seated at the closing table. The escrow officer verified the documents."Owner of record: Natalie Foster. No outstanding liens. The closing package is complete."Marcus stopped when he heard the words "no outstanding liens.""You paid off the loan too?"I didn't look at him."Yes.""When?""The day you took Sophie to therapy."Marcus's face went pale. That day, he'd been helping Sophie choose a hotel. He'd said she might have a breakdown if she stayed alone.Meanwhile, I'd gone alone from the bank to building management and then to the realtor.I'd dismantled our three years together into a stack of documents. He walked to my side."Natalie, can we stop this? Once the condo is sold, we'll really be..."I signed my name."I

Marcus came to Brookhaven anyway. When I left the project campus that day, he'd already been waiting outside for two hours.Clients and coworkers walked beside me.I wore a gray suit, carried a folder, and moved with steady confidence. When I saw him, I paused for only a second. Then I told my coworkers, "Go ahead to the car."Marcus hurried toward me and held out an insulated bag."Your stomach is sensitive. I brought oatmeal and medicine."I didn't take it."Thank you, but no."When I spoke those words, I saw his hand stiffen.Whenever my stomach hurt in the past, I would message him.[Marcus, I don't feel well.]His replies came more and more slowly. Eventually, I stopped sending them.He probably thought I'd recovered. I hadn't. I'd simply stopped expecting anything from him.He said quietly, "Natalie, I've made Sophie leave. I'll learn how to take care of you again."I looked at him."Marcus, you still think the problem is that Sophie moved into the condo."He ru

The next day, Marcus went to Natalie's company. After checking the system, the receptionist said politely, "Ms. Foster accepted an out-of-town assignment. She's already gone to Brookhaven."Marcus froze."When did that happen?""The transfer was approved last week."Last week. Then he remembered. At dinner that day, Natalie had told him about a renewable-energy campus project that could earn her a promotion to director. He'd been searching for therapists for Sophie and had only replied, "Do whatever you think is best."She'd been silent for a long time. That had been the last time she tried to include him in her future. And he'd let it fall.Marcus went next to the wedding-planning studio. The planner looked uncomfortable when she saw him."Mr. Reed, Ms. Foster canceled every service."She showed him their message history. It was filled with detailed notes Natalie had made.Marcus's father couldn't drink alcohol.Marcus's mother disliked cilantro. As he stared at the

When Marcus returned to the condo, only cardboard boxes and hollow light remained in the living room.He stood in the entryway and realized for the first time that the place no longer felt like a home.None of Natalie's shoes remained in the cabinet. Her usual coffee mug was gone from the kitchen. Her cleanser, hair ties, and towels had all vanished from the bathroom.Only Sophie's belongings remained, glaring evidence of everything that had happened.Marcus opened the primary bedroom door. The sheets had been changed, and the vanity was empty. The card that said, "There will always be a light on for you here," was gone from the drawer. Later, he found it lying on top of Sophie's box.He stared at the words as his face slowly lost color. When he'd written them, he'd thought nothing of it.Sophie was afraid of the dark, so he'd offered some casual reassurance. But he'd forgotten that Natalie had been terrified of thunderstorms since childhood.During their first year togeth

Marcus stood in the doorway as though he hadn't understood me."Natalie, you're telling me to leave?"I nodded."Yes."His voice was hoarse. "This has been my home for three years too.""Yesterday, you listed me as a temporary guest."I looked at the door."I'm the owner, yet entering my own condo disturbed Sophie's sleep. Since that's the case, I'll sell it before I surrender the place completely."Marcus finally panicked."That isn't what I meant yesterday.""Then what did you mean?"His mouth opened, but no answer came.Tears rolled down Sophie's face."Natalie, I'm sorry. I truly had nowhere else to go."I looked at her. "Whether you have somewhere to go is Marcus's concern, not mine."Her face turned pale.Marcus stepped in front of her."That's enough, Natalie. She's already upset."I picked up the new smart-lock key and handed it to Rachel."Lock the door when the showing is over."Marcus reached out to stop me. "We need to talk."I looked at him."About wh

The next morning, Marcus took Sophie to a therapy appointment. He sent me a message.[She's unstable right now. I'll be home later.]I didn't reply. I deleted it.The building technician arrived promptly at ten.As he reviewed the smart lock's dashboard, his frown deepened."Ms. Foster, Sophie Clarke has administrator privileges. Mr. Reed is also an administrator, but you're listed as a temporary guest.""I know."He opened the activity log."There's an entry from 11:48 last night."I looked at the screen.[Administrator Marcus Reed removed user Natalie Foster's emergency access.]My fingers went still.Eleven forty-eight was shortly before I returned from the hospital.I hadn't entered the wrong code, and the system hadn't malfunctioned.Marcus had personally deleted me from my own home. The technician looked uncomfortable. "Ms. Foster, do you still want me to proceed?""Proceed.""Clear every user?""Every one."The device chimed as the records disappeared one by
