Chapter 2

Author: Sweet Marmalade
After I went inside, I opened the shoe cabinet. My house slippers were gone.

The pair on Sophie's feet was the new one I'd bought for myself.

She followed my gaze, looked down, and hurried to take them off.

Marcus stopped her. "Don't bother. The floor is cold."

Then he looked at me. "They're only slippers. Is this really necessary?"

Only slippers. Only an access setting.

Eventually, I would become "only Natalie," too.

I took the medicine from him but didn't use it.

Our engagement photograph had once sat on the nightstand in the primary bedroom. Now it had been replaced by Sophie's calming diffuser and sleep spray.

Marcus said she would stay for only three days, but three pairs of her shoes, arranged by season, were already in the cabinet.

I opened my messages with my realtor, Rachel Royce, and sent one.

[I want to relist the condo. As soon as possible.]

The reply came quickly. [Ms. Foster, are you certain? Didn't you plan to live there after the wedding?]

I listened to Marcus comforting Sophie softly outside the room.

[I'm certain.]

This condo was no longer my home.

The next morning, voices from the kitchen woke me.

Marcus was making breakfast.

Low-sugar pumpkin oatmeal, served warm.

I'd had stomach trouble for years, yet he'd never remembered that pumpkin triggered my acid reflux.

But when he carried out the first bowl, he handed it to Sophie.

"You didn't sleep well last night. Eat something first."

Wrapped in my cashmere shawl, Sophie sat at the dining table and said softly, "I'm sorry for being such a burden."

I stood in the bedroom doorway.

Only then did Marcus notice me.

"Natalie, there's more in the pot. Serve yourself."

I entered the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. The unsweetened yogurt I drank every day was gone.

In its place was a row of oat milk and allergen-free bread.

I remembered the day before my endoscopy last month. He hadn't even remembered when I had to stop eating, yet he'd asked whether I could pick up coffee for him on the way.

He wasn't careless. He simply never spent that care on me.

I opened the medicine cabinet. My stomach medication had expired six months ago.

Sophie's melatonin, anti-anxiety medication, heating patches, and vitamins were neatly separated and fully stocked.

Marcus entered and saw me searching the cabinet. His explanation came naturally.

"Sophie's doing badly right now. She can't miss her medication, so I stocked up."

I asked, "Did you know mine expired?"

He paused.

"Aren't you usually good at toughing things out?"

The sentence was like a fine needle. It didn't stab deeply, but it hurt everywhere.

I closed the cabinet.

"Right. I can handle it."

So naturally, I deserved to come last.

During breakfast, Sophie suddenly asked, "Natalie, could I use the vanity in the primary bedroom for a few days? I have a lot of things."

Marcus answered for her.

"Go ahead. Natalie hardly wears makeup lately anyway."

I looked at him. "It's mine."

Marcus frowned. "I know it's yours. She's only borrowing it. Don't be so sensitive."

Sophie's eyes instantly filled with tears.

"Forget it. I won't use it. Please don't argue because of me."

Marcus set down his spoon, his voice growing heavier.

"Natalie, she's already trying to be careful. Can you stop making her feel like she's a burden?"

I almost laughed. I was still paying the mortgage on this condo.

I'd bought the table and chosen every plate and pan.

Even the chair he was sitting in had been paid for with three months of overtime bonuses.

Yet somehow, I was the one burdening her.

Marcus went to work that morning, and Sophie returned to the primary bedroom to sleep.

I entered the office to find my documents and found several pink storage bins beside the desk.

Each label had been carefully printed.

[Natalie's backup items.]

I stared at the word "backup," my throat tightening.

Inside my own home, even my belongings had become the backups.

A notification appeared on my phone.

Sophie had posted an update the night before.

The photograph showed a corner of the primary bedroom: the curtains, bedside lamp, and diffuser I'd personally selected.

The caption read, [I finally have a safe little place where I can sleep.]

Marcus had liked it.

He'd also commented, [Stay as long as you need.]

I stared at those words for a long time, then saved a screenshot.

Afterward, I opened my laptop and began organizing the finances.

The down payment, mortgage installments, home improvement loan, furniture, appliances, condo fees, electricity, water, and gas.

I listed every payment Marcus had transferred.

I'd never kept score before. I thought marriage meant becoming a family, and it didn't matter who contributed more.

Only now did I understand that the person who never kept score often ended up losing even her place in the home.

Rachel called and asked whether she could photograph the condo that afternoon.

I said yes.

"Ms. Foster, does your fiancé know?"

I looked at the accounts and answered calmly.

"He isn't the owner."

The other end went quiet for a moment.

"That makes things easier."

The condo quickly entered the formal closing process. The buyers' financing was approved without delay, and Rachel asked me to return and sign the final transfer documents.Marcus came to the title office too.By the time he arrived, I was already seated at the closing table. The escrow officer verified the documents."Owner of record: Natalie Foster. No outstanding liens. The closing package is complete."Marcus stopped when he heard the words "no outstanding liens.""You paid off the loan too?"I didn't look at him."Yes.""When?""The day you took Sophie to therapy."Marcus's face went pale. That day, he'd been helping Sophie choose a hotel. He'd said she might have a breakdown if she stayed alone.Meanwhile, I'd gone alone from the bank to building management and then to the realtor.I'd dismantled our three years together into a stack of documents. He walked to my side."Natalie, can we stop this? Once the condo is sold, we'll really be..."I signed my name."I

Marcus came to Brookhaven anyway. When I left the project campus that day, he'd already been waiting outside for two hours.Clients and coworkers walked beside me.I wore a gray suit, carried a folder, and moved with steady confidence. When I saw him, I paused for only a second. Then I told my coworkers, "Go ahead to the car."Marcus hurried toward me and held out an insulated bag."Your stomach is sensitive. I brought oatmeal and medicine."I didn't take it."Thank you, but no."When I spoke those words, I saw his hand stiffen.Whenever my stomach hurt in the past, I would message him.[Marcus, I don't feel well.]His replies came more and more slowly. Eventually, I stopped sending them.He probably thought I'd recovered. I hadn't. I'd simply stopped expecting anything from him.He said quietly, "Natalie, I've made Sophie leave. I'll learn how to take care of you again."I looked at him."Marcus, you still think the problem is that Sophie moved into the condo."He ru

The next day, Marcus went to Natalie's company. After checking the system, the receptionist said politely, "Ms. Foster accepted an out-of-town assignment. She's already gone to Brookhaven."Marcus froze."When did that happen?""The transfer was approved last week."Last week. Then he remembered. At dinner that day, Natalie had told him about a renewable-energy campus project that could earn her a promotion to director. He'd been searching for therapists for Sophie and had only replied, "Do whatever you think is best."She'd been silent for a long time. That had been the last time she tried to include him in her future. And he'd let it fall.Marcus went next to the wedding-planning studio. The planner looked uncomfortable when she saw him."Mr. Reed, Ms. Foster canceled every service."She showed him their message history. It was filled with detailed notes Natalie had made.Marcus's father couldn't drink alcohol.Marcus's mother disliked cilantro. As he stared at the

When Marcus returned to the condo, only cardboard boxes and hollow light remained in the living room.He stood in the entryway and realized for the first time that the place no longer felt like a home.None of Natalie's shoes remained in the cabinet. Her usual coffee mug was gone from the kitchen. Her cleanser, hair ties, and towels had all vanished from the bathroom.Only Sophie's belongings remained, glaring evidence of everything that had happened.Marcus opened the primary bedroom door. The sheets had been changed, and the vanity was empty. The card that said, "There will always be a light on for you here," was gone from the drawer. Later, he found it lying on top of Sophie's box.He stared at the words as his face slowly lost color. When he'd written them, he'd thought nothing of it.Sophie was afraid of the dark, so he'd offered some casual reassurance. But he'd forgotten that Natalie had been terrified of thunderstorms since childhood.During their first year togeth

Marcus stood in the doorway as though he hadn't understood me."Natalie, you're telling me to leave?"I nodded."Yes."His voice was hoarse. "This has been my home for three years too.""Yesterday, you listed me as a temporary guest."I looked at the door."I'm the owner, yet entering my own condo disturbed Sophie's sleep. Since that's the case, I'll sell it before I surrender the place completely."Marcus finally panicked."That isn't what I meant yesterday.""Then what did you mean?"His mouth opened, but no answer came.Tears rolled down Sophie's face."Natalie, I'm sorry. I truly had nowhere else to go."I looked at her. "Whether you have somewhere to go is Marcus's concern, not mine."Her face turned pale.Marcus stepped in front of her."That's enough, Natalie. She's already upset."I picked up the new smart-lock key and handed it to Rachel."Lock the door when the showing is over."Marcus reached out to stop me. "We need to talk."I looked at him."About wh

The next morning, Marcus took Sophie to a therapy appointment. He sent me a message.[She's unstable right now. I'll be home later.]I didn't reply. I deleted it.The building technician arrived promptly at ten.As he reviewed the smart lock's dashboard, his frown deepened."Ms. Foster, Sophie Clarke has administrator privileges. Mr. Reed is also an administrator, but you're listed as a temporary guest.""I know."He opened the activity log."There's an entry from 11:48 last night."I looked at the screen.[Administrator Marcus Reed removed user Natalie Foster's emergency access.]My fingers went still.Eleven forty-eight was shortly before I returned from the hospital.I hadn't entered the wrong code, and the system hadn't malfunctioned.Marcus had personally deleted me from my own home. The technician looked uncomfortable. "Ms. Foster, do you still want me to proceed?""Proceed.""Clear every user?""Every one."The device chimed as the records disappeared one by
