Chapter 2
Ayla I woke up to a series of doorbell rings, the sound worsening the thrumming headache behind my temples. "Aaargh," I groaned, the repeated ding-dong sound getting on my nerves. I stumbled out of bed, brushing my hands over my heavy eye-lids. My legs were still weak and my head was spinning but I pushed myself downstairs. "I'm coming," I weakly shouted over another bell ring, rubbing my temples. "Jesus Christ Ayla, what the fuck took you so long?" Roman's stepbrother stopped pacing seconds after I opened the door, looking at his wristwatch. "What the hell Kaleb! This better be important," I responded, closing my eyes when the light had me feeling like someone was forcing stick hot needles inside them. "Is this how you welcome me after months of not seeing me?" he mocked, while I rolled my eyes. He had been in another city, where he had established a new company and was required to stay there until it was stable. It was safe to say that I hadn't been around him much, so basically he was kind of a stranger. "You are in the wrong wing, incase you forgot. What do you want?" I boredly asked, covering my mouth as I yawned. The mansion had three wings and Kaleb chose the rear one, so there was no need for him to wake me up when he could access his wing. "Where's that son of a bitch?" He walked in uninvited, the side of his body brushing against mine. "Is that why you interrupted my beauty sleep? There's a thing called a mobile phone, should have used it." I sarcastically said while I closed the door and then dragged myself after him. "Beauty sleep?" He mocked, looking at my face for seconds, scrutinizing it until I lowered my eyes under his burning gaze. "Your face is swollen Ayla, your eyes are blood-shot, your hair is unkempt, lips are chapped...so which beauty sleep did I interrupt?" As he described my appearance, my mind pulled me back to the moment Roman walked out on me. "She's pregnant," Roman's word replayed in my mind, making my chest constrict. A sudden feeling to sit down gripped me, forcing me to stumble along the hallway, supporting myself with my hands on the wall. "Ayla?" I could hear Kaleb's voice from a far, over my sudden ringing ears but I couldn't respond. "You are not enough." I sagged into the chair, clutching at my stomach. I thought sleeping would make things easier for me, but the reality of being cheated was far much worse. "Ayla? Come on, look at me." Kaleb shook me, breaking my trance, pulling me from my gruelling thoughts. "He's not here." My voice cracked as I answered his earlier question, pulling my eyebrows together when a sharp pain cut across my head. "You're crying," his voice was gentle, his face though blurry showing concern. Up until then, I had no idea I was crying. "I'm not," I swallowed to sooth my dry throat. "So what is this, juice?" he teased, running his thumb so smoothly below my right eye. His touch had my breath hitching, the gentleness of it prompting me to close my eyes. "What did he do?" he asked, making me close my eyes as fresh tears escaped. How had he straight up known his step-brother had something to do with it. I couldn't control the tears as I fully relived the moment, starting from the text to Roman walking out on me. "Jesus Ayla, talk to me." I felt the cushion dip beside me as he sat down, followed by his hand on my back. "He's cheating on me," I mumbled, unable to stop myself from letting it out. "That fucker. It doesn't even surprise me." I knew Kaleb was a womanizer, but at least he wasn't married or dating anyone. "I can't say I understand what you're feeling, but crying for a stupid man like Roman is just a waste of time." He rubbed my back, the feeling so foreign yet simple making my heart leap a bit. "Thanks, so what did he do?" It was my turn to ask Kaleb, trying to change the topic, putting my guard back up. There was no point in telling Roman's stepbrother that my marriage was as good as ruined. "It's okay to talk to someone when you're hurting. So stop trying to change the topic." I couldn't help but wonder why he was showing concern. "You said yourself that you don't understand what I'm feeling. I mean why would you?" I spoke in a shaky voice. "All you do is fuck around, change ladies like clothes and repeat the process all over again. So don't sit there and pretend that you want to listen to what I have to say because you and your stepbrother are just the same; fucking womanizers." I lashed out, the outburst leaving my chest rapidly rising up and down. Dead silence followed after that, and when I dared look at Kaleb his jaw ticked, his lips pressed together in a hard line. I swallowed hard, tapping my foot on the carpet beneath. After almost a full minute in silence I stood up, wiping my tears with the back of my hand. "If Roman isn't in the office, he's somewhere with his girlfriend," I stated in a low voice, my back facing Kaleb as I blinked back more tears. Waking up to an empty bed and a lonely residence was a reminder that I was on my own. As I pushed myself towards the L-shaped staircase, a hand gripped my back, and before I could react I was pinned on the wall, right beside the staircase. Kaleb then pressed his body against mine in a flash, the proximity making my breath hitch. For a moment I closed my eyes, savouring his scent that had my mouth watering. "Don't ever equate me to Roman again," Kaleb bent, whispering against my ear. His low deep yet commanding voice sent a shiver down my spine. "Am I clear?" he added, pressing tighter against me. In my mind I knew he was evading my privacy, but instead of pushing him away, my body basked in the feeling the proximity it brought. "Let me go," I forced the words out, wiggling in an attempt to get out of his hold. Instead, my nipples brushed against his stomach, a feeling I couldn't describe bombarding me. His jaw visible ticked, his thigh between my leg pressing harder against me. A warmth pooled immediately between my legs, making me freeze. "Are you sure you want me to step back?" His limps curled upwards in a smirk, as he brushed his hand along the side of my arm ever so lightly. "Kaleb." It was meant to come out as a warning, but my voice wavered, betraying me. "Not so confident now?" he chuckled, his blue eyes burning into my glistening ones for seconds, before stepping back. "Motherfucker," I mumbled, moving away from him as fast as I could. "For such a pretty and innocent face you sure have a foul mouth." My face warmed up, his admission on my looks affecting me when it shouldn't have. "Please close the door on your way out," I stated, and turned to leave but before I could the home phone rang, stopping me in my tracks. My heart leaped, and not in a good way, because only Roman called the home phone. "Aren't you going to get that?" Kaleb pointed at TV stand where the phone sat. I wasn't ready to talk to Roman, I was still in pain and not even the brief contact with Kaleb was enough to erase the damage. 'What does he want?' I thought, but in the end went and picked the call. "I'm bringing my love home today, vacate the bedroom for her," Roman spat, not even bothering to say hi to me, or checking on me first. "Huh?" I questioned, furrowing my eyebrows. "Yes, the woman who's going to be the mother of my child. I want her to be close to me for her safety and that of my child, and that means being on my side at all times. I expect you to have moved to the guestroom by the time we get home." He ended the call, leaving me to internalize his words, one by one. "This can't be happening," I mumbled, lowering the cordless phone, looking at it. "No, no, no..." I shook my head, the contents of my stomach churning. "How can Roman insult me like this?" I whispered, pulling my brows together when the pounding behind my eyes intensified. "What did he say?" Only when Kaleb spoke, did I remember that he was still there. My mind had completely drifted, still trying to make sense of Roman's words. "Nothing that concerns you," I snapped. "Fine, but if you need any help, just let me know. I'll go look for him now." I listened until his footsteps faded and the sound of the front door closed. For a moment I wished that he had stayed while I poured my heart out. I refused to crumple, for the sake of my pregnancy. If Roman was going to be that way, then he didn't deserve to know that I was also pregnant. "I will not move to the guest room. I am Roman's wife and I will be treated as such," I whispered into the vast living room. I wasn't about to let him use me, then on top of that humiliate me. If Roman thought I would do as he hoped, then he had another thing coming.Ayla"Please pick up," I muttered, tapping my foot on the rug in the living room, waiting for my best friend Danica to answer the phone. My mind was saturated from hours of thinking about Roman bringing another woman, that I really needed Danica's help. It took me long to finally decide to call her, because she was pregnant for her long time boyfriend and I didn't want to stress her. "The soup is ready honey. Do you want it here or at the dining?" Marise our nanny asked."I tol-"The sound of the front door stopped me mid-sentence, followed by the sound of high-heels on the tiles. I held my breath, realizing that Roman was not joking when he said he was going to bring home his woman. I hardly had time to react when they rounded the hallway, stepping inside the living room."Danica?" I stood up, my eyes falling on Roman's arm around my bestfriend's waist. I let out a forceful breath, an uncontrollable shudder sweeping through my entire body.I wanted to believe that she had been on h
Kaleb I couldn't stop thinking about Ayla's reaction when I pinned her against the wall, as I drove to the family mansion. Since Roman had ignored my calls the entire day and could not find him in the office, I was going to confront him at home. The fucker had taken millions out of the company's account without any explanation however, an action that was dangerous to the company's progress. 'Will I see her?' I thought, shaking my head to stop thinking about my step-brother's wife in that manner. I could still feel a shudder running down my spine when she wiggled her body against mine. I wished I could hear her breath hitch again, as I whispered against her ear. She had gotten me so mad when she tried equating me to my fucked up step-brother. Despite that, her outburst and her foul mouth had also awakened feelings that I couldn't describe. "Fuck!" I hit the break, the near hit on a homeless girl in the middle of the road pulling me out of my thoughts. She stood unfazed by the s
AylaThe smell of coffee, sausages and baked bread wafted into my nose, making my stomach lurch. My eyes were still closed, but I was aware of my surroundings, including light steps towards the king size bed. I turned, then opened my eyes, coming face to face with Kaleb, with a tray of breakfast in his hands."Good morning Ayla, I hope I didn't wake you up." Kaleb placed the tray on the bedside table."I was," I paused, letting out a cough when my throat burned."I was already up. Good morning." I forced a smile at him as he opened a mini-fridge beside the bedside table. There was nothing good about the morning, just pain, my frail body, nausea and a saturated mind. "Here, take this first." He opened a sealed bottle of cold water from the refrigerator, then handed it to me. I gladly chugged the water in large gulps, closing my eyes as the cold liquid soothed my parched throat. "Thank you," I placed the bottle on the table."I didn't know what you'd love for breakfast so I made coffe
Ayla"Is this how your dead mother taught you how to make chicken fried rice?" Catarina spat, dropping her spoon on the glass dining table with a clink. I ground my teeth, her words making me want to force the food down her throat, and bash her face on the table. It was one thing insulting me, but bringing my mother into the mix was entirely a different one."Get back in that kitchen and make me something else!" She ordered, throwing her napkin at me, pinning her cold gaze at me."What's wrong with this one?" I asked, holding her gaze with my chin tilted upwards."Excuse me!" She squinted her eyes, pushing her chair backward with force as she stood."How dare you talk back at me?" I ground my teeth together, with my mouth sealed shut."Mom?" Danica's voice drifted into the luxurious dining room. Even though it had just been a week, the two seemed to have just clicked. Catarina pampered Nika every time, a treatment she hadn't accorded to me as her son's wife."Hey honey," Catarina repl
AylaI stood against the door of my small servant quarters space, my heart pounding, still reeling from the shock of my husband's words. "I can't believe you'd stoop so low as far as faking a pregnancy for pity."My head span, making me slide against the door and onto the cold floor, despite my aching joints and muscles. I clenched my fists, nails digging into my palms as a boiling feeling envoloped me. How could Roman think I was lying about his own child? Instead of hope and love, all he had subjected me to was rejection and insults."Why would you do this to me, Roman?" I whispered, the tugging chest in my pain making me close my eyes tightly.I remembered our wedding day, my trembling lips spreading into a painful smile. My mind pushed one memory after another, each one of them making my eyes burn. Though blurry, I stared at the ring on my finger, a choking sound coming out of my throat. To me it meant everything, but to Roman it was just like any other simple jewelry. Wasn't ther
Kaleb"Absolutely not! Are you out of your mind, Kaleb?" My mom shouted, placing her glass of wine on the oak table."What is wrong with you?" Roman asked, unwrapping his hand from Danica's ugly back. They were in the backyard, enjoying their Sunday, chatting and giggling while Ayla was running up and down serving them and running every errand they wanted."Ayla cannot and will not work as your secretary. She is not going to stop being a maid in this house," my mom spat, while I remained standing unfazed, my hands comfortably pocketed in my pants."She's facing the consequences of being a gold digger," Danica chimed in, chewing her ball gum loudly with her mouth open. I knew something about her was wrong when I met her for the first time before the wedding."Who asked you to talk? This is a family issue; shut up." I dismissed her, letting my lips stretch into a short smirk when her jaw dropped down."Don't talk to her like that; she's carrying my child; she's family," Roman defended,
Ayla "Thank you so much," I whispered, staring at my hands on my lap as I sat in Kaleb's office, right in front of his office desk. It all felt surreal to a point that I had to pinch myself to make sure that it wasn't a dream. I had no idea how he had managed to convince Catarina to let me work in the company, but I was glad I was no longer a fucking maid. "It's nothing, Ayla," he assured, flashing a smile and a wink that had me almost melting. "Where do I start?" Even though I felt so weak, I wanted to start work immediately. The only thing that I was dreading was having to deal with Roman. It was no secret that I would be seeing him in the company, since he was a co-CEO of his father's pharmaceutical company. "About that," Kaleb dropped his pen on his desk, then leaned on his swivel chair, holding my gaze. I fidgeted under his stare, looking everywhere around him but not at him. "Since you didn't get enough sleep last night, how about you rest up? We will officially begin tomor
Kaleb I typed furiously on my computer keyboard, trying to get rid of Ayla's creamy thighs out of my mind. My dick was painfully hard, pressing on the zipper of my slacks, demanding release. I had to press my legs together for some friction, which worsened the situation. "Damn it!" I swore, leaning on the back of my chair, running my hands on my face. "What's gotten you so worked up?" Dean's voice drifted into my ears, making me withdraw my hands from my face. "You fucker, when did you come to Nashville?" I sat up, tapping my foot on the floor. "A few minutes ago, only to find you talking to yourself. Have you suddenly gone mad?" He teased, closing the door behind him. He was supposed to be in Memphis, but his unnaounced travel to Nashville meant that something serious had happened. "No man," I heaved a sigh, making no effort to stand and give him a bro hug. He eyed me suspiciously, trying to decipher what I was hiding. We hadn't been friends since college for nothing; he knew m
AylaKaleb ground his crotch into mine, eliciting a soft moan, which he swallowed in the kiss. I knew I was supposed to stay mad at him, but how could I when at that moment the only feeling I could feel was heat coursing through my veins, pooling between my legs?I roamed my hands on his covered lean back, feeling the hard muscles beneath my palms."Goddess, baby, I want you," he repeated, snapping his hips forward."Mmh," I could only hum as he pressed further into me, grazing my pulsating clit."Come on," I complained when he sat up, missing his warmth already."Relax; I want to make sure that there is no barrier between us." He winked, unbuttoning his blue button-down shirt. The hunger in his eyes prompted me to sit down and take off my dress, my patience thinning."Oh damn," he huskily uttered, his gaze roaming from my boobs, down to my thighs and the sweet spot."I could say the same," I retorted, licking my lips as I admired his lean upper body. My eyes followed the movement of
Kaleb"No, you're lying." Amanda shook her head, turning to look at me."Is she?" I asked her, straightening my back as the weight of what Ayla was trying to accomplish pressed down on me."Trust me," Ayla mouthed the words at me while Amanda's attention was still directed at me. I knew the moment Ayla lied that I was sterile; she was looking to bait Amanda and gauge her reaction."B-ut," Amanda stuttered, her upper lip trembling."What's wrong, Amanda? Cat got your tongue?" Ayla mocked, wiggling her eyebrows."Yeah, Amanda, you look a little taken aback for someone who believes that the DNA results were correct...unless, of course, they were fake," I chimed in, heat flushing through my body. A part of me hoped that for her sake Leo was mine, but another part was doubtful."How can you even say that? Of course the results were legit. You came for the test, remember?" She defended."And yet when I told you that you would speak directly to my lawyer, you got all mad and threatened to ta
AylaI sat on my office chair staring at my computer screen as it lit up. My mind was saturated, but I had work that needed to be done. Randolf had forwarded more emails for me to go through and more files to read and sign. Dean had gone through more transaction records, and each one of them led to a trail of money laundering behind Kaleb's back."You did say apart from the wooded area, Roman visits another house frequently, right?" I asked Dean over the tea break in his office, sitting comfortably on his office couch while he rotated aimlessly on his chair."That's right. Although I can't tell exactly why," he responded."Can you text me the address?" I crossed my index and middle fingers, hoping that he wouldn't ask why I needed it. I wanted to survey the house to see if I could get something useful. With Marise missing and Roman's attempt to pin the attempted murder on him, I needed to uncover more dirt about him."Sure, but if I may ask." He paused, leaning over the desk, his elbo
KalebI didn't sleep a wink—I kept on tossing and turning, thinking about Roman, my mother and Marise. By 6 a.m., Ayla and I were outside Marise's ward, waiting for clearance to go in. There was a lot of movement in her room, hospital staff going in and out. I had a lot of questions, and the only person who could give me straight answers was Marise. We hadn't played the CD, not after discovering such a life-changing truth."Excuse me," I called to one of the female nurses."What's going on? We have been waiting here for minutes to go in, but no one is telling us a thing." I consulted, squinting my brows when the two detectives assigned to her shooting case showed up."You can't see her now," she quickly stated, looking at her wristwatch."But—""She's missing, okay? She was here one minute, and the next her bed was empty, and now there is a search going on for her," she relayed."How can a patient left under the hospital's care go missing? Marise was in no condition to walk out of the
Ayla"If it isn't my douche brother or should I call say...wife snatcher, his best friend and my wife who can't keep her legs closed," Roman mocked, as we headed into the mansion via the rear entry, leaning on the double door frame. I expected Kaleb to jump on him, but he ignored him."Are you not going to say something?" Roman added, attempting to rile us up."Actually I do have something to say," I crossed my arms across my upper abdomen and stopped walking."Absolutely no, you have nothing to say to him." Kaleb attempted to pull me away from Roman."I don't need your permission, or anyone else's permission to talk to whoever I want," I told Kaleb, ignoring the crease on his forehead."Is it because of what I did to you?" Kaleb asked, looking at Dean for help."This has nothing to do with you," I clarified."You heard her, she wants to talk to me. Now chop chop, I want to catch up with my first wife." Roman was relishing in the fact that I was defying Kaleb."I will come up in a fe
KalebI was going through my emails, one by one when Dean called me. The day had been a long one, and I hoped that whatever he had to say wasn't going to make it even worse."Aren't you one door away from my office down the hallway?" I asked, forcing enthusiasm even though I felt drained. All I wanted was to talk to Ayla but I knew she wasn't going to even think about it after what Amanda pulled off earlier."I'm not in the office, had to step out with Ayla." The moment he mentioned her name the insides of my stomach warmed up. "How is she? Is she okay? Can you please tell her that I really want to explain myself?" I didn't know I was going on and on until Dean chuckled over the phone, snapping me out of it."We are outside the building, heading to the mansion," Dean explained."Is Ayla coming back?" I excitedly asked, shutting down my computer."Be down here in 10 minutes, I'll tell you on the way," he straight up instructed. I could hear Ayla in the background telling Dean that sh
Ayla"Are you heading out early today?" Dean asked after I walked out of my office, head downcast. My eyes were swollen yet again from crying the entire afternoon, until I couldn't cry anymore. "I uum," I cleared my throat, to clear my husky voice. "I want to visit Marise today," I finished, side stepping him."You've been crying." He stated as a matter of fact, wrapping his hand around my wrist."Listen Ayla—""Please don't Dean. I know you want to talk about Kaleb and Amanda and right now, I can't," I breathed, biting my bottom lip to stop it from trembling."I understand. Can I give you a ride to the hospital? Before you say no, I want to accompany you because I know about what Marise did. Even though she is bed ridden, seeing her alone is dangerous," he quickly spoke. "Okay," I whispered. It didn't take long for us to get to the hospital, and even though visiting hours were over, Dean managed to get us into the ward. When we got in, Marise was asleep, her back facing us. "Maybe
KalebI kept on passing by Ayla's office, gathering enough courage to talk to her after a night of not sleeping in the same house with her. Dean had told me that she came in earlier since she lived near the office, but I hadn't seen her. It was almost lunchtime, and she was still locked up in her office. Pacing up and down in the hallway, I eyed her door from a distance."Is there a reason why you are pacing up and down instead of answering my calls?" The irritating voice sounded behind me, breaking me out of my trance."What the hell are you doing here?" I gritted my teeth, my back facing Amanda. How had I not heard the sound of her stilettos coming into contact with the tiled hallway? I must have been really deep in thought."Didn't you get the email?" Her sickly sweet voice had me clenching my hands into fists. After closing my eyes to calm myself down, I turned, glaring at her."Given that look," she said, roaming her eyes around my face as if scrutinising it. "You have already co
Ayla"You said you were taking me to an apartment, Dean, not a freaking penthouse," I exclaimed, my swollen eyes widening as I took in the entrance."Well, it's still technically an apartment." Dean shrugged as we walked inside the beautiful space. The first thing I saw was floor-to-ceiling glass windows that allowed the natural flow of light inside."I can't afford this," I whispered, admiring the bespoke furniture."Yes, you can, but you are not paying," he answered."But you said you were going to—""Forget what I said, Ayla. You are free to stay here for however long you wish. Everything will be provided for," Dean clarified, beckoning me to follow him."What's the catch?" I stopped, placing my hands on either side of my waist."There's no catch, I am helping a friend," Dean explained."You haven't known me for that long. Plus a part of me feels like Kaleb put you up to this. And if he did, let me break it to you, this will not make me forgive him.""I don't need to know a person
