LOGINWhile on break at work, I turned on my phone and checked the messages from my friends in the group chat.
Elizabeth: Bar later. You guys good to go? Lana: I’m coming! Elizabeth: Cool. How about you, @Ruelle? I typed a reply. Me: I can’t. I’m busy. As soon as my shift was over, I went straight home. I showered, changed clothes, and then wait in front of Xerces’ house. His car wasn’t there, and the lights inside were off, so I knew he wasn’t home yet. An hour had passed, and he still hadn’t come home. I was already freezing, swatting away mosquitoes. I turned my phone on and entertained myself by scrolling through social media while waiting. Then I clicked on the story of one of Xerces’s close friends—Dash. It was a shot taken inside a bar. I was about to swipe to the next story when my eyes snapped to something familiar. Even with the dim lighting, I recognized him. It was Xerces. He was holding a glass of liquor. My brows shot up, and my blood instantly boiled the moment I saw a woman sitting next to him. I didn’t waste a second and went back to my house to change into something else. I drove to the bar; fortunately, it was nearby. The place wasn’t crowded, so I didn’t have a hard time finding him. Before I could get close, a familiar voice called my name. “Ruelle!” My eyes widened when I saw Elizabeth and Lana. They were at this bar too? Great. And since Xerces and his friends were sitting just across from us, I immediately got his attention. He was staring at me intensely while the girl beside him kept flirting with him. I smiled at him. “I thought you were busy?” Elizabeth asked as soon as I sat down. She raised an eyebrow, looking at me as if she were interrogating me. There were two guys at our table—their flings for the night. “I was… earlier,” I said casually. I grabbed one of the drinks on the table and downed it in one go. I looked straight at Xerces. He was facing our table, so I could see his face. His eyes shot to me, and I expected him to look away, just like he always does, but I was wrong. He held my gaze as he reached for the girl’s jaw and crashed his lips against hers. The girl responded without hesitation. I didn’t look away, watching them kiss fiercely. The girl’s hand was on his chest, caressing it. His hand was on her bosom, aggressively groping it. Just as she was about to unbutton his shirt, he grabbed her hand and stopped her. Confusion showed on her face. “Then why are you here? You didn’t even tell us you were coming with us. Unless… you’re here for someone, are you?” Our gaze broke the moment Elizabeth spoke again. She was already busy with the guy beside her, who was kissing her bare neck. I smiled and nodded. “Hey, get a fucking room!” I snapped at Lana, who was already making out with her fling. She ignored me and continued with what she was doing. “Who? Your new boyfriend?” asked Elizabeth. “You already moved on?!” Lana exclaimed, nudging the guy next to her. I still haven’t told them about Xerces, and I don’t have any plans to do so until he’s mine. “You think he’s the only man I could have? You might want to remember who I really am.” They chuckled. “Oh, yeah. You’re such a flirt.” “Just wait and see.” I drank the remaining alcohol in my glass. A new round of drinks they’d ordered arrived, so I kept myself busy with that. As much as I wanted to grab someone to keep me company for the night, I couldn’t—especially now that I knew Xerces was watching me. Hours passed, and I’d already had quite a lot to drink. I tensed up when I saw him stood. He might be going to the bathroom, so I got up to follow him. He went into the men’s room, so I waited outside. I leaned against the wall and closed my eyes tightly. I was dizzy. “What the fuck are you doing here again, woman?” I straightened up when I heard his irritated voice. He had already come out. “Is she your girlfriend?” His eyebrows shot up. “What?” “The girl you were with earlier. She isn’t, is she?” “I don’t do girlfriends.” “Good,” I murmured. “What?” I stepped closer to him. “Can I apply for the position?” “Apply for what?” “To be your girlfriend,” I said bluntly. “My application is always open. Just tell me if you’re interested in hiring me.” “No,” he said firmly. “Yes.” Before he had a chance to respond, I pressed my lips against his. He was about to push me away, but I wrapped my arms around his neck and deepened the kiss. He didn’t respond at first, but I continued to move my lips. I pressed my body against his, my breasts pressed against his hard chest. Maybe it was the effect of the alcohol that made him eventually kiss me back. I let out a soft moan when he held my shoulders and pushed me against the wall. Our kiss grew more aggressive, like two starving animals finally tearing into their prey. I could taste the strong alcohol in his mouth, and I knew he could taste the same in mine. I moaned softly as his lips trailed down to my neck, gently biting it. His hands roamed around my body. He lowered the neckline of my dress and slid his hands inside. My hands landed in his hair, curling and gripping it as he played with my peak. “Oh God,” I moaned. “You like that? Hmm?” His hoarse voice turned me on even more. I swear it sounds as sexy as he is. I was about to touch him down there, but then he pulled himself away from me as if he’d finally realized what we were doing. “Oh fuck,” he muttered frustratedly. As a child, I was in a hurry to grow up. I thought adulthood meant freedom. Funny how things turned out. Now, all I want is to be that little girl again—the one whose biggest dilemma was choosing clothes for her Barbie dolls. I’ve always heard how much adulthood sucks, but you will never really understand how exhausting it is until you experience it yourself. Sometimes, I honestly wish I could crawl back into my mother’s womb and start over.Money is great, but so is having a will to live. At this point, I think I need a full year off just to romanticize my life again.“Jesus, it’s freakin’ hot,” Lana grumbled. “I’m still alive, but I swear this is what hell must feel like.”“Consider it an early orientation. You still have time to repent,” Elizabeth teased with a grin.“Shut up. Stop talking about yourself.”“Oh, please. With a list of sins as long as yours, I wouldn’t be so confident if I were you.”I shook my head wh
“Thank God you’re here,” I said the moment he stepped inside his house.Xerces froze at the sight of me sitting comfortably on his couch as if I belonged there. His expression immediately shifted to shock.“How did you even get in here?”I tilted my head slightly toward the window behind him. The glass was broken.“I came through there,” I said simply. His jaw literally dropped. A string of curses slipped out under his breath as he turned back to me, eyes blazing.“What did you do?!”“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for the damages.”His jaw clenched even harder. “Why do you always bring trouble into my house?” he muttered through gritted teeth, walking closer until he stood right in front of me.He dropped his briefcase on the small table with a loud thud and placed both hands on his hips.“I need to ask you something,” I said before he could continue his rant.“How urgent is it that you had to
As I pulled up in front of Xerces’s house, I stepped out of the car and walked toward his front door. I knocked once, then twice, but there was no response. I pressed the doorbell several times after that, yet the house remained quiet. With no other choice, I headed straight to my house and took a quick shower instead. After getting dressed, I made my way to my bedroom balcony, where I could see the street clearly. His favorite car wasn’t parked in his garage, so I knew he wasn’t home yet.The next day, I tried again to talk to him, but it seemed like he hadn’t been home last night. I started getting ready. I chose a simple but classy dress and grabbed Zeus’s number from my bedside table before sending him a message. To: ZeusWhere are we meeting?I’m sorry but I think I’m gonna be late. I’m still finishing a few things.I finished my makeup, setting it lightly with powder while waiting for a reply.Zeus: No wo
“Morning,” I greeted Xerces the next day.Like usual, he was already in the kitchen making breakfast.“Hmm,” he responded with a short nod.He turned off the stove after finishing whatever he was cooking. I settled onto one of the stools and quietly watched him prepare the plates.“By the way, thank you,” I said, breaking the silence between us.“I had no choice.”“You did. You just chose to be kind.”“I’m not kind.”“I didn’t say you are,” I pointed out with a grin. “But you did something good. And doing one good deed doesn’t automatically make you a kind person. But still…”I honestly believe he is a good man underneath all that attitude. I just wanted to tease him. And judging by the way his brows immediately knitted together, I’d say it worked.***“Good morning, Doc,” Xena greeted the moment I walked into the clinic.“Morning.” I smiled at her briefly before placing my bag down. “How many appointments do we have today?”“Eleven so far. First patient’s at 9:30.”“Okay. Just call m
It was already past midnight when we left the party. I groaned as I sank comfortably into the passenger seat of Xerces’s car, my heels finally getting a break.“Your seatbelt,” he reminded me without looking at me.I let out a small laugh after realizing I still hadn’t buckled up. “Yeah, yeah. Got it.”The engine started, and soon enough, the car pulled away from the street.“That was a night,” I murmured, letting my head fall against the headrest. My eyes slipped shut as exhaustion slowly crept in.“You’re wasted.”I nodded lazily. “Had too much fun.”He scoffed. “You’ve been drinking almost every day. You seriously think you’re gonna make it to your thirties without getting ill?”“Hey, that’s such an exaggeration,” I complained, turning my head toward him.“Is it?”“Yes,” I insisted. Then, after a short pause, I added, “Well, not every day.”“Tell that to yourself.”“I don’t even drink every day,” I told myself, just like he told me to.He snorted. For a moment, only the low hum of
I was the first to end the conversation when more than half an hour had passed and Xerces still hadn’t returned. I stood up and started looking for him.He wouldn’t just leave me, would he?I went inside Apollo’s house. Some guests had already moved indoors. I scanned the area, weaving through small groups of people. The place wasn’t crowded, yet I couldn’t spot him anywhere. Where the hell did he go?I stepped out into the front yard to check if he had already left. Seeing his car still parked nearby, I relaxed.I was about to head back in when someone called my name.“Ruelle?”I turned toward the voice. It was dark, but I could make out a figure leaning against the wall. The smell of smoke hit me, making me instinctively cover my nose as he took a drag.He pushed himself off the wall and slowly walked over to me. When the light finally hit his face, I got a clear look at him.“Looking for someone?” he asked.
