“What are you doing here again?” He didn’t even try to hide the irritation in his voice.
Xerces Miller, the epitome of perfection, was now standing before me, with his ripped six-pack abs in full view. He had just gotten out of the shower, holding a towel and drying his wet hair. “Good morning.” I smiled at him. I didn’t wait for him to invite me in and just went inside on my own. “Get the fuck out of my house.” I ignored him and strode toward the kitchen. “I’m thirsty.” I grabbed a glass and walked over to the fridge. But before I could open it, a hand grabbed my arm and stopped me. I looked at Xerces and met his blazing, angry eyes. “What? Can’t you be generous even for once? It’s not like I’m a stranger to you. Come on.” I wiggled my arm to pull free of his grip. He let go, but the darkness in his expression didn’t fade. “I just want to drink some water.” I opened the fridge and took out a pitcher. I poured myself a glass and drank. “Why? Don’t you have water at your place?” I shook my head. “They haven’t delivered yet,” I lied. I just wanted to see him today. “Fine. Drink and get the hell out of my house, and don’t ever come back.” I leaned against the refrigerator and looked at him intently. “You look sexy,” I rasped. Xerces is my ex-boyfriend’s older brother, Gavin. We were in a relationship for almost two years until I caught him cheating on me with my sister. So now, I wanna have my revenge by hitting on his brother. All of his family members liked me, except for this man in front of me. He has always been so aloof toward me, and I didn’t know why. I can still picture how he looked at me like he wanted to tear me apart the day my ex introduced me to his family, as if I’d done something wrong. I never even heard him say my name once. I guess he hates me that much. In those two years of our relationship, Gavin had told me how much he envied his brother because Xerces always got everything he wanted. “Do you hate me?” I asked casually. The answer was obvious, but whatever. He didn’t answer and just held that hard stare. I couldn’t read what was going on in his mind. “Why do you hate me? I’ve always been nice to you, haven’t I? I’ve started conversations with you many times, but you always ignore me. Tell me. Why?” I pressed. I’d known Xerces longer than I’d known his brother. We’d been neighbors for five years—we were just college students back then. Meanwhile, I met Gavin three years ago. I was surprised to find out that the grumpy, hot guy living across from my apartment was actually his brother. “I just don’t like you, that’s it.” “Too bad. I like you.” I winked. “Too bad for you too. There’s no way in hell I’d like you back.” “Really?” I took a step closer to him. Slowly, I let my hand glide across his chest sensually. “Is it because of your brother?” I asked again. “We were over for almost five months. Come on. It’s not like you care about bro codes, do you? That’s so pathetic.” He didn’t answer. “Why don’t you try dating me? Hmm?” I suggested. “I think we could be perfect for each other.” I wet my lips and gently bit them. I saw his eyes follow the motion of my lips. His gaze darkened. His Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed. “No. We won’t,” he said, his tone firm. “Really?” I lifted the glass to my mouth and drank the rest of the water. I deliberately let it spill, trailing from my chin and soaking into my shirt. His eyes dropped to my chest. I knew my bra was visible through the white tank top I was wearing. “Oops, sorry. Would you mind drying it for me?” I purred. He avoided my gaze. Since his face was turned slightly to the side, I could clearly see his jaw move. His breathing had gotten rapid. I chuckled flirtatiously. “Just kidding.” He walked out of the kitchen, so I dropped the glass in the sink and followed him. “Get out and go change at your place.” He sat on the living room couch, one leg draped over the other. I was dressed in a plain white tank top and tight black shorts, having just come from a jog. I sat down on the couch opposite him. I ignored the sharp glare he was giving me. “Why? Are you bothered? Or tempted, maybe?” I said teasingly. “In your dreams.” “Oh, sure. Just to let you know, you’re naked in them most of the time.” He grimaced, and said, “Fuck off.” “Could be better when it’s ‘fuck you.’” Xerces is the most boring man I’ve ever hit on in my whole life. Yet, I couldn’t deny the fact that he gave me a kind of excitement and thrill no one else ever had. I returned home and lay back on the bed, staring at the blank white ceiling. I’ve been trying to seduce him for months, and it was so obvious he doesn’t give in easily. I came up with this plan to get even with Gavin for what he did to me. Dating other men after him, particularly his brother, would definitely provoke a reaction, knowing he used to tell me how much he envied and hated his brother. I want to prove to him that he was never the only option for me. Maybe it’s just my ego, but what the fuck do I care? But I know deep inside that I am doing this in the hope that he’ll get jealous and want me back eventually because I know I’m still not over him.As a child, I was in a hurry to grow up. I thought adulthood meant freedom. Funny how things turned out. Now, all I want is to be that little girl again—the one whose biggest dilemma was choosing clothes for her Barbie dolls. I’ve always heard how much adulthood sucks, but you will never really understand how exhausting it is until you experience it yourself. Sometimes, I honestly wish I could crawl back into my mother’s womb and start over.Money is great, but so is having a will to live. At this point, I think I need a full year off just to romanticize my life again.“Jesus, it’s freakin’ hot,” Lana grumbled. “I’m still alive, but I swear this is what hell must feel like.”“Consider it an early orientation. You still have time to repent,” Elizabeth teased with a grin.“Shut up. Stop talking about yourself.”“Oh, please. With a list of sins as long as yours, I wouldn’t be so confident if I were you.”I shook my head wh
“Thank God you’re here,” I said the moment he stepped inside his house.Xerces froze at the sight of me sitting comfortably on his couch as if I belonged there. His expression immediately shifted to shock.“How did you even get in here?”I tilted my head slightly toward the window behind him. The glass was broken.“I came through there,” I said simply. His jaw literally dropped. A string of curses slipped out under his breath as he turned back to me, eyes blazing.“What did you do?!”“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for the damages.”His jaw clenched even harder. “Why do you always bring trouble into my house?” he muttered through gritted teeth, walking closer until he stood right in front of me.He dropped his briefcase on the small table with a loud thud and placed both hands on his hips.“I need to ask you something,” I said before he could continue his rant.“How urgent is it that you had to
As I pulled up in front of Xerces’s house, I stepped out of the car and walked toward his front door. I knocked once, then twice, but there was no response. I pressed the doorbell several times after that, yet the house remained quiet. With no other choice, I headed straight to my house and took a quick shower instead. After getting dressed, I made my way to my bedroom balcony, where I could see the street clearly. His favorite car wasn’t parked in his garage, so I knew he wasn’t home yet.The next day, I tried again to talk to him, but it seemed like he hadn’t been home last night. I started getting ready. I chose a simple but classy dress and grabbed Zeus’s number from my bedside table before sending him a message. To: ZeusWhere are we meeting?I’m sorry but I think I’m gonna be late. I’m still finishing a few things.I finished my makeup, setting it lightly with powder while waiting for a reply.Zeus: No wo
“Morning,” I greeted Xerces the next day.Like usual, he was already in the kitchen making breakfast.“Hmm,” he responded with a short nod.He turned off the stove after finishing whatever he was cooking. I settled onto one of the stools and quietly watched him prepare the plates.“By the way, thank you,” I said, breaking the silence between us.“I had no choice.”“You did. You just chose to be kind.”“I’m not kind.”“I didn’t say you are,” I pointed out with a grin. “But you did something good. And doing one good deed doesn’t automatically make you a kind person. But still…”I honestly believe he is a good man underneath all that attitude. I just wanted to tease him. And judging by the way his brows immediately knitted together, I’d say it worked.***“Good morning, Doc,” Xena greeted the moment I walked into the clinic.“Morning.” I smiled at her briefly before placing my bag down. “How many appointments do we have today?”“Eleven so far. First patient’s at 9:30.”“Okay. Just call m
It was already past midnight when we left the party. I groaned as I sank comfortably into the passenger seat of Xerces’s car, my heels finally getting a break.“Your seatbelt,” he reminded me without looking at me.I let out a small laugh after realizing I still hadn’t buckled up. “Yeah, yeah. Got it.”The engine started, and soon enough, the car pulled away from the street.“That was a night,” I murmured, letting my head fall against the headrest. My eyes slipped shut as exhaustion slowly crept in.“You’re wasted.”I nodded lazily. “Had too much fun.”He scoffed. “You’ve been drinking almost every day. You seriously think you’re gonna make it to your thirties without getting ill?”“Hey, that’s such an exaggeration,” I complained, turning my head toward him.“Is it?”“Yes,” I insisted. Then, after a short pause, I added, “Well, not every day.”“Tell that to yourself.”“I don’t even drink every day,” I told myself, just like he told me to.He snorted. For a moment, only the low hum of
I was the first to end the conversation when more than half an hour had passed and Xerces still hadn’t returned. I stood up and started looking for him.He wouldn’t just leave me, would he?I went inside Apollo’s house. Some guests had already moved indoors. I scanned the area, weaving through small groups of people. The place wasn’t crowded, yet I couldn’t spot him anywhere. Where the hell did he go?I stepped out into the front yard to check if he had already left. Seeing his car still parked nearby, I relaxed.I was about to head back in when someone called my name.“Ruelle?”I turned toward the voice. It was dark, but I could make out a figure leaning against the wall. The smell of smoke hit me, making me instinctively cover my nose as he took a drag.He pushed himself off the wall and slowly walked over to me. When the light finally hit his face, I got a clear look at him.“Looking for someone?” he asked.
