The distinct, electronic chime of the front entrance intercom cut through the heavy silence of the kitchen, breaking the invisible wire stretched between them.

"Oh, that must be the premium groceries I ordered for our smoothie bowls," Chloe said, setting her strawberry down and sliding off her barstool. She stretched her arms casually, completely blind to the emotional wreckage sitting right next to her. "They always take forever at the security gate. Be right back, Gia."

The second Chloe’s silk pajamas vanished around the corner of the corridor, the domestic illusion of the kitchen shattered.

Gia stood up so fast her barstool shrieked violently against the hardwood floor. "Stop it!" she hissed, her voice trembling as a volatile mix of rage, panic, and unwanted heat flooded her chest. "Are you absolutely out of your mind? She was sitting right there!"

Leo didn't flinch at her outburst. He set his empty espresso cup down with a slow, agonizingly deliberate clink and stepped around the marble counter. He moved with the effortless, fluid stride of a predator who knew his prey had nowhere left to run. Gia backed away instinctively, but within three steps, the small of her back hit the cold edge of the kitchen sink.

Leo closed the distance until he was towering over her, invading her personal space so completely that the rich scent of his sandalwood cologne crowded out the oxygen in her lungs. He placed his hand flat on the marble counter right next to her hip, effectively locking her into a cage of his own making.

"I told you last night on the terrace, Gia. The old rules are dead," Leo whispered, leaning down until his sharp jawline was inches from her face. His dark, amber-flecked eyes locked onto hers with absolute, crushing dominance. "The person who took that photograph wants to see you run. If you pull away from me now, if you try to pack your bags and hide, it looks like an admission of guilt. The board will initiate a full disciplinary review, and your scholarship vanishes before the market opens on Monday."

"So your brilliant solution is to terrorize me in front of your sister?" Gia’s chest heaved against his, her hands flat against his white linen shirt, trying desperately to push a fraction of space between them. The fabric felt smooth beneath her palms, but the hard, unyielding muscle beneath it refused to budge. "You're using a blackmail threat to force me into submission."

"I am using the tools at my disposal to ensure you survive the world you so desperately wanted to enter," Leo growled softly, his gaze dropping to her lips, tracking the rapid, breathless movement of her mouth. "You wanted to prove you belong among the elite, little girl? This is what it takes. Tomorrow night is the university's annual legacy gala at the hilltop estate. You are walking through those front doors as my date."

Gia’s breath hitched, her eyes widening in pure terror. "No. No way. Chloe will know something is wrong the second she sees us together. I’m a scholarship student from a middle-class background, Leo. I don't belong at a legacy gala, and I certainly don't belong on your arm."

"You belong wherever I place you," Leo murmured, his voice dropping to a gravelly, quiet register that made a shiver run straight down her spine. He reached up with his free hand, his long fingers gently catching a stray lock of dark hair that had fallen across her forehead. His fingertips lingered on the sensitive skin of her temple, his touch agonizingly tender, forming a terrifying contrast to the cold, ruthless finality in his words. "You will wear the dress I sent to your room. You will smile, you will stay by my side, and you will play the part."

"And if I refuse?" she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her desperation. "If I decide to take my chances with the board?"

Leo’s eyes darkened, the slow, wicked tilt returning to the corner of his lips. He leaned in until his lips brushed against the shell of her ear, his hot breath making her entire body go rigid.

"Then I will save the blackmailer the trouble," Leo whispered into the dark. "I'll print that photograph myself and hand it directly to the dean. Choose your master, Gia. Walk into the fire with me, or let it burn your entire future to ash."

The distant, dragging sound of Chloe’s slippers returning down the hardwood hallway echoed through the penthouse.

Leo straightened up in a single, seamless motion, the dangerous predator instantly morphing back into the detached, aristocratic older brother. By the time Chloe walked back into the kitchen carrying a wooden crate of fresh berries, Leo was already leaning against the opposite counter, casually pulling his smartphone from his pocket as if he hadn't just rewritten the terms of Gia's life.

"They forgot the organic blueberries again," Chloe groaned, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she set the crate down. "Gia? What's wrong? You look like you've completely seen a ghost."

Gia stood trapped against the sink, her hands trembling so violently she had to hide them behind her back. She looked at Leo’s cold, perfect silhouette illuminated by the bright morning sun, realizing the devastating truth. The playboy hadn't just crossed a line—he had built a labyrinth around her, and her only way out was to walk straight into the jaws of the beast.

"I'm fine, Chloe," Gia lied, her voice hollow, her eyes fixed on the man who now held her entire world in his hands. "Just... thinking about how much I have to prepare for tomorrow."

The grand ballroom of the Vance hilltop estate did not look like a party. It looked like a battlefield dipped in gold.Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted ceilings, casting a brilliant, unforgiving light over the university’s most powerful alumni. Men in tailored tuxedos and women in dripping diamonds held crystal champagne flutes, their voices blending into a low, aristocratic hum. These were the titans of industry. These were the people who funded the Vance Scholarship. And every single one of them turned to stare as Leo walked through the arched double doors with Gia anchored to his side.Gia’s heart hammered a frantic, bruised rhythm against her ribs. She wanted to shrink into the shadows. She wanted to pull her hand away from the heavy, burning weight of Leo’s grip on her waist. The garment box resting on the guest bed looked like an execution order. It was wrapped in heavy, textured charcoal paper, embossed with the minimalist gold logo of an ultra-exclusive boutique on Rodeo Drive, a place where a single dress cost more than Gia’s mother made in six months.Gia stood over it, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. She didn't want to open it. She wanted to pack her canvas duffel bag, run down the service stairs of the Vance penthouse, and take the first bus back to her cramped apartment. But the silent, digital threat sitting in her phone’s call history kept her anchored to the floorboards. Choose your master. Gia did not sleep for a single second.By the time the digital clock on her nightstand finally flickered to seven in the morning, her eyes were burning, dry and strained from staring at the plaster ceiling. The image of the blackmail text remained vividly seared into her retinas. Every loop of her thoughts led back to the same terrifying conclusion: her scholarship, her academic standing, and her entire escape from a life of crushing financial struggle were hanging by a single, invisible thread. If that photograph went public, the Vance Foundation Board would strip her funding before her Monday morning lectures even began. High-society institutions did not protect the reputations of scholarship outsiders; they erased them to protect their own.Unable to handle the suffocating quiet of the guest room any longer, Gia dragged herself out of bed. Her muscles felt heavy, stiff with a volatile cocktail of exhaustion and residual adrenaline. She washed her face with freezing water, staring a

Gia’s back hit the cold stone balustrade, the rough marble biting through the thin silk of her top. Leo didn't stop until he was inches away, a solid wall of pure, furious heat blocking out the rest of the world. The dark, sweet scent of bourbon and raw sandalwood rolled off him, entirely overwhelming her senses."What do you care who I talk to, Leo?" Gia fired back, her voice shaking but her eyes defiant as she forced herself to look up into his dark, unyielding stare. "You don't own me. Go back inside to your friends.""You spent the last hour trying to see how far you could push me, Gia," Leo murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration against her skin. He stepped flush against her, his thigh pinning hers against the railing, completely trapping her. "Letting him touch you, looking right at me while he did it. You wanted to know what would happen? Well, look at me.""I don't want you," she lied, her chest heaving, her breath catching as his shadow completely consumed her."Liar,"
