Serena POV

The Afterlife of the Living

My eyes flew open.

A sharp, ragged gasp tore from my throat, my chest heaving as if I had just surfaced from the crushing depths of a freezing ocean. I scrambled backward instinctively, my hands clawing frantically at the mattress, expecting coarse dirt, dried blood, and the rotting stench of the dead.

Instead, my fingers sank into soft, clean cotton.

The room was bathed in a gentle, golden wash of morning sunlight streaming through sheer white curtains. Outside, a bird chirped a lazy melody. Inside, the quiet was absolute, broken only by the steady, rhythmic ticking of a clock on the wall.

I froze. My breath caught in my windpipe.

Where am I?

Panic clawed at my brain. Had the zombies dragged me into some grotesque nest? Was this a hallucination born from the fever of infection?

I remembered the cold steel of the bunker door pressing against my spine. I remembered the heavy, mocking laughter of Damian and Bianca echoing through the metal while I screamed for my life.

Above all, I remembered the agonizing, white-hot explosion of pain as teeth sank deep into my calf. I remembered the heavy hands dragging me down, the suffocating darkness, and the absolute certainty that I was dying alone, betrayed by the only two people I had ever truly loved.

I died. I felt my life bleed out onto the pavement.

So why was I staring at a ceiling fan? Why was I wrapped in clean blankets?

Slowly, with a trembling dread that made my bones feel like ice, I lifted my hands.

They were pristine.

There were no jagged tears in my skin. No dirt caked beneath my fingernails. No bruised knuckles from pounding on a door that would never open.

"No..." I breathed, my voice shaking uncontrollably.

I threw the blanket off and tumbled out of bed. My bare feet hit the polished hardwood floor, sending a shock of cold up my legs. I practically threw myself toward the full-length mirror by the closet, bracing my hands against the frame as if I were about to look upon a corpse.

The reflection staring back at me stopped my heart.

It was me—but a version of me I hadn't seen in years.

My skin had color. My cheeks were full, flushed with health, completely stripped of the hollow, starving gauntlessness that had defined my existence during the two long years of the hellscape. My eyes were wide, clear, and burning with a fierce, bewildered light.

I raised my right hand and touched my cheek. The glass reflection mirrored the exact motion.

I pinched my skin, hard.

Ouch.

A sharp sting bloomed instantly.

"I'm... I'm alive?"

My knees buckled. I slid down the mirrored glass until I was sitting on the floor, pulling my knees up to my chest as a turbulent storm of emotions broke loose inside me. Tears streamed down my face—not of sorrow, but of sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

How? How was I breathing? How was I whole?

The Anatomy of a Miracle

Pressing my palms against my temples, I forced my racing thoughts to slow down. I needed facts. I needed reality.

My eyes darted toward the bedside table. My phone lay resting right where it always did.

Scrambling across the floor, I snatched it up and pressed the side button. The screen flashed to life, displaying the lock screen clock and date.

I stared at the numbers. Then, I blinked hard and looked again.

October 11.

My breath hitched violently. My fingers went completely numb.

I frantically unlocked the phone, tapped the calendar app, and checked the year.

It wasn't two years into the apocalypse. It wasn't the day I died.

It was ten days before.

Ten days before the sky choked on ash. Ten days before the dead rose to reclaim the earth. Ten days before Damian and Bianca condemned me to a horrific death in the dark.

The phone slipped from my limp fingers, clattering softly against the blankets.

For a long, surreal moment, the room spun around me. And then, a sound broke from my lips—a dry, breathless laugh that quickly curdled into a sob, before shifting back into something cold, dark, and terrifyingly clear.

"I'm reborn," I whispered to the empty room.

The universe, in all its cruel indifference, had thrown me a lifeline. It had dragged me backward through the corridors of time, placing me right at the precipice of the nightmare, giving me a second chance to rewrite my fate.

And this time, I wouldn't walk blindly into the slaughter.

As the realization settled deep into my marrow, a strange, electric tingling rippled across my consciousness. It felt like an invisible veil parting somewhere deep within my mind, opening a vast, boundless expanse that defied all laws of physics.

What is that?

Instinctively, my mind reached out toward the sensation, and a staggering revelation bloomed in my awareness: an infinite, timeless void. A mental storage space, completely detached from the physical world, belonging to me alone.

Could it be real?

My eyes locked onto a glass of water sitting on my nightstand. Without a second thought, I focused my intent on it.

Disappear.

In a fraction of a second, the glass vanished into thin air.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I closed my eyes, searching the boundless interior of my mind's dimension, and visualized the glass resting safely inside.

Bring it back.

Clink.

The glass of water materialized right back onto the nightstand, the liquid inside completely undisturbed, not a single drop spilled.

A hysterical grin spread across my face.

A spatial storage dimension!

In my previous life, I had witnessed people commit murder over a single moldy crust of bread or a lukewarm bottle of water. I had watched society collapse into absolute savagery because resources ran dry. Food, medicine, clean water, and tools had become the ultimate currency—and the ultimate death sentence.

And now? I possessed a bottomless vault to store it all.

I had ten days. Ten days to strip the city dry, stockpile everything required to outlast the end of the world, and build a fortress of absolute security.

But before I could buy a single can of beans, there was garbage that needed to be taken out.

Severing the Ties

My gaze drifted back to the phone resting on the bed.

Two names haunted my recent memories. Two people who had sworn eternity to me, only to hand me over to the monsters with a smile.

Damian.

Bianca.

My blood ran cold, the lingering warmth of rebirth hardening into pure, unyielding steel.

I picked up the phone, scrolled through my contacts, and dialed Damian’s number. My hands didn't shake this time. There was no hesitation, no nervous fluttering in my stomach—only the cold, heavy numbness of a ghost who had already seen her own grave.

He answered on the third ring.

"Babe! Hey!" Damian’s voice came through the speaker, warm, bright, and sickeningly familiar. "How are the wedding plans coming along? You wouldn't believe how stressed I am with all these last-minute details. We're running out of time!"

If this were yesterday, hearing his voice would have made me melt.

Today, it made my stomach churn.

"Damian," I interrupted, my voice flat, devoid of any emotional cadence.

"Hm? What is it, sweetheart?"

"I'm calling it off."

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the line. The ambient noise of whatever coffee shop or office he was sitting in suddenly sounded distant.

"What?" Damian asked, a sharp edge of irritation bleeding into his tone. "What are you talking about, Serena?"

"I'm ending our engagement. We're done."

"Are you out of your mind?!" His voice spiked, disbelief turning into immediate anger. "We have a venue booked! Invitations sent! People are flying in! You can't just wake up and say—why are you doing this?"

Why?

Because you'll watch me get eaten alive and laugh about it. Because you think I'm a burden. Because you're a coward wrapped in a handsome smile.

I swallowed the toxic bile rising in my throat, keeping my voice chillingly calm.

"My decision is final, Damian. Consider the wedding canceled."

"Serena, stop being childish—"

"Goodbye, Damian."

I ended the call before he could sputter another word. I didn't block him yet; I wanted him to stew in his confusion, entirely unaware that he had just lost his primary caretaker, his financial safety net, and the woman who would have taken a bullet for him.

One down.

Almost immediately, the phone buzzed in my hand.

The screen lit up with a photo of Bianca—my "best friend," smiling brightly, her arm slung around my shoulders in a lie captured in pixels.

For a second, I stared at it. I could hear her voice ringing in my ears: Let her die. Why waste our supplies on her?

I swiped and answered.

"Serena! What the hell is going on?" Bianca's voice burst through the receiver, frantic and accusatory. "Damian just called me, screaming that you called off the wedding! Are you having some kind of mental breakdown? Do you have any idea how much work we put into this?"

I walked slowly over to the window, looking down at the oblivious pedestrians walking along the sunny street below.

"I canceled the wedding, Bianca," I said quietly.

"Are you insane?! You've been talking about marrying Damian for three years! What, did you guys have a fight? Do you want me to come over and—"

"And I'm ending our friendship, too."

Absolute, dead silence.

If a pin had dropped on the carpet, it would have sounded like thunder.

"Your... your what?" Bianca finally choked out, her voice pitching upward in sheer shock. "My friendship? Serena, are you drunk? What did I do?!"

"Nothing yet, Bianca," I murmured, a bitter, humorless smile touching my lips. "Or maybe... everything."

"You're making zero sense! You're cutting me off? After everything we've been through? After all the secrets we've shared, all the times I've been there for you?!"

> “Years of friendship don't guarantee loyalty. Sweet words don't prove love. And being close to someone doesn't mean they wish you well.”

>

"Yes," I answered firmly. "I don't want you in my life anymore. Lose my number, Bianca."

"Serena, don't you dare hang up on me—"

Click.

I tossed the phone onto the bed, completely indifferent to the barrage of incoming text messages and frantic missed calls that immediately began to flash across the screen. I walked over to the settings menu, turned the phone on silent, and placed it face-down.

Let them panic. Let them wonder. Let them scramble.

In my past life, I spent every waking moment trying to keep everyone else happy, bending over backward, sacrificing my own peace to maintain relationships built on sand. I had been a martyr for people who viewed me as disposable.

Never again.

The Oath of the Survivor

I turned back toward the mirror, standing up tall, squaring my shoulders. The residual phantom pain in my leg felt like a distant, fading memory.

Ten days.

That was all the time I had before the world burned to ash and the dead inherited the earth.

I had no time for heartbreak. No time for anger. Every second from this moment forward belonged to my survival.

"Serena," I whispered to my reflection, my eyes burning with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. "In the last life, I died because I trusted monsters. In this life, I survive alone."

I turned away from the mirror, walking purposefully toward my closet.

The apocalypse was coming. And this time, when the dead came knocking at my door, I wouldn't be the one begging for mercy in the dark.

I would be the one holding the key.
