Serena POV

The next morning, I sat at the dining table, bathed in the pale, cool light of dawn. A porcelain cup of steaming black tea sat before me, the steam curling lazily into the quiet air.

For the first time in my entire adult life, my chest didn't feel like it was trapped in a vise.

There was no nagging anxiety. No frantic internal monologue wondering if I had texted Damian back quickly enough, if my tone had been sweet enough, or if I had done enough to earn a fraction of his affection. In my past life, I had bled myself dry trying to satisfy a man whose capacity for love was a bottomless void. I had handed over my savings, my time, my dignity, and my peace of mind, all in the delusional hope that one day he would look at me and decide I was worthy.

What a pathetic, blind fool I was.

"Madam, would you like some more tea?" the maid asked softly, her footsteps light against the polished hardwood.

I looked up, offering a calm, polite smile—one entirely devoid of the hollow exhaustion that used to haunt my features. "No, thank you. You can clear the table once I'm finished."

"Yes, ma'am."

I picked up my fork, savoring the quiet. But peace, as I had learned, was a rare and fleeting luxury in this world.

Just as I took another bite, the heavy front door downstairs suddenly flew open with a violent crash.

Heavy, furious footsteps pounded across the foyer, echoing up the staircase and down the corridor like rolling thunder.

I didn't even flinch. I didn't need to look up to know who had torn into my home like a wounded animal.

The Breaking Point

Damian burst into the dining room, his expensive tailored suit slightly rumpled, his handsome face twisted into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated rage. The man who had once made my heart flutter now stirred nothing within me except a cold, hollow revulsion.

He looked like a spoiled king who had just discovered that his subjects had locked the treasury and thrown away the key.

"What do you want, Damian?" I asked evenly, not bothering to raise my eyes from my plate.

He slammed his hands against the back of an empty chair, his voice cracking with disbelief. "Serena, what the hell is wrong with you?!"

I slowly, deliberately, laid my fork down beside my plate. I looked up.

"Excuse me?"

"Why the hell is my bank account frozen?"

Ah. There it was.

The mask had slipped entirely. He hadn't rushed over here at dawn because he missed me. He hadn't come to demand an explanation for our broken engagement out of heartbreak or concern.

He came because his lifeline—my money—had been cut off.

A dark, humorless laugh bubbled up in my chest, though I kept my face as smooth as glass.

"Because I don't want to fund your lifestyle anymore," I replied casually, taking a slow sip of my water.

His face purpled. "Is that why you locked my cards?!"

"Yes."

"Serena, have you actually lost your mind? Are you out of your damn rabbit-hole head?!"

I tilted my head, studying him with the detached curiosity of a scientist observing a particularly aggressive specimen in a cage. "Is my reason not valid?"

"No! It's insane!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the walls. "You can't just freeze my accounts without consulting me! You know how much I depend on those funds!"

"And?"

He stared at me as if I had spoken in ancient Greek.

I picked up my napkin, dabbed my lips, and looked him dead in the eye. "Damian, please talk faster. I'm busy."

"Busy doing what?!" he bellowed, slamming his palm against the tabletop so hard that the china rattled violently. "Sitting here eating breakfast while you ruin my life?!"

"That," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a freezing chill, "is none of your business."

"Serena—!"

"Remove your hand."

He stopped dead. "What?"

"You heard me," I whispered, the danger in my tone so palpable that even his blind rage faltered for a fraction of a second. "Remove your hand from my table. Now."

For three agonizing seconds, the room held its breath. The air grew thick, charged with the violent collision of who I used to be and who I had become.

Slowly, his jaw twitching with suppressed fury, Damian withdrew his hand.

I calmly returned my attention to my tea. "Now, if you've finished throwing your tantrum, you can let yourself out."

"You're really doing this?" he hissed, disbelief cracking his voice. "After everything we've been through? After three years? You're throwing it all away over a whim?"

I nearly choked on my tea.

Everything we've been through.

Was he talking about the countless dinners I paid for? The debts of his I quietly cleared behind his back? The business ventures I financed that went straight into his personal account? Or was he talking about the endless nights I spent crying myself to sleep while he stayed out late, only to forgive him the next morning because I was terrified of being alone?

I had given him everything. And because I gave it freely, he had come to believe it was his birthright.

"Yes, Damian. I'm doing this."

"Why?" His voice cracked, a pathetic mix of anger and panic. "What changed overnight? Did someone fill your head with garbage? Was it Bianca?"

Mentioning Bianca’s name almost made me smile. Oh, she’s next on the list, sweetheart.

I leaned back in my chair, resting my hands in my lap. "I don't want to marry you. Our engagement is over. The cards are locked. Whatever financial support I gave you is finished. From this second onward, you and I are absolute strangers."

His expression twisted through a dozen different emotions—shock, denial, fury, and finally, a cold, venomous arrogance.

"You'll regret this," he spat, pointing a trembling finger at me. "You think you're so independent? You'll come crawling back to me within a week begging for forgiveness when you realize you're nothing without me."

I picked up my fork again, utterly unbothered.

"I'd rather spend the rest of my life regretting that I left you," I murmured, "than spend one more minute regretting that I stayed."

He stared at me, searching my eyes for a single flicker of hesitation, a tear, a bluff—anything to prove I was still the weak, pliable woman he had manipulated for years.

He found nothing. Just an empty, unyielding wall of ice.

"Fine," Damian choked out, turning on his heel with a violent jerk. "Have it your way. But don't expect me to take you back when you come crawling!"

He stormed toward the front door.

Bam.

The door slammed shut with a force that rattled the windowpanes.

I didn't blink. I didn't sigh. I took another bite of my toast.

The man who had once held my entire universe in the palm of his hand was gone. And for the first time in my life, my chest felt completely light.

"Madam," the maid whispered, reappearing anxiously from the hallway. "Should I... should I clear the rest?"

"Yes," I replied smoothly, standing up from the table. "And when you're done, bring my laptop up to the study. I have work to do."

The Architecture of Survival

Up in the privacy of my study, the world outside faded into the background. I sat at my mahogany desk, opened my laptop, and pulled up my financial portfolios and real estate listings.

In my previous life, I had let Damian talk me out of half of these moves.

“Why buy that old warehouse on the industrial outskirts, Serena? It’s a waste of money.”

“Why invest in those private security firms? The city is safe.”

“Save your money for the wedding, babe.”

I had listened to him. I had poured my capital into venues, designer dresses, and social status symbols that would all turn to ash in less than ten days.

Not this time.

My fingers flew across the keyboard. I began accepting every single commercial property offer, warehouse acquisition, and land title I had previously rejected.

* A massive, reinforced logistics warehouse with high security fences on the city's perimeter—Accepted.

* A secluded, off-grid mountain property equipped with solar generators and a deep-water well—Purchased.

* Multiple commercial cold-storage facilities near major transport hubs—Secured.

Money was still king for the next week and a half. After that, paper currency would become worthless kindling, but right now, it was my weapon.

And as if the universe itself was conspiring to give me an edge, a series of system notifications flashed across my screen.

Bonus Awarded: Corporate Dividend Payouts.

Investment Return Credited: High-Yield Assets Liquidated.

My accounts swelled with millions of unexpected liquid cash—funds tied to previous corporate bonuses and early investment returns that I had historically ignored or reinvested slowly.

A fierce, triumphant grin spread across my face.

More ammunition.

I immediately rerouted every cent into my emergency purchasing budget. I didn't just need properties; I needed supplies. Tons of them.

Over the next four days, my life became a blur of silent, calculated frenzy.

I contacted bulk wholesalers, medical suppliers, and agricultural distributors. I didn't buy through my personal name where it could draw attention; I used anonymous shell corporations and proxy buyers, arranging massive drop-offs at my newly acquired warehouses.

Every single night, once the delivery trucks had unloaded pallets of goods into the locked facilities, I stood alone in the cavernous spaces. With a mere flick of my mind, I activated my spatial storage dimension.

Disappear.

Pallet after pallet of vacuum-sealed rice, dried beans, flour, canned meats, medical kits, antibiotics, heavy-duty winter gear, tools, and thousands of gallons of purified bottled water vanished into the infinite, timeless void of my mind.

Tons of supplies, swallowed up into a space that never aged, never spoiled, and weighed absolutely nothing against my physical form.

I was building a fortress inside my own soul.

When the apocalypse arrived, when the supermarkets were looted bare, when society collapsed into cannibalistic savagery, and when desperate people starved in the freezing dark—I would be walking around with an entire civilization's worth of resources locked safely inside me.

The Unwelcome Ghost

On the fourth day of my preparations, my phone buzzed violently on the desk.

I glanced down.

The screen lit up with a word that made my stomach curdle with a bitter, toxic resentment.

MOM.

I stared at it.

In my previous life, my mother had been an anchor dragging me down into the deep. She blamed me—yes, me, a child at the time—for the disappearance of my younger sister, Lisa, years ago. I had spent my entire life walking on eggshells around her, begging for a crumb of maternal approval, constantly apologizing for a tragedy I had no control over.

And when the apocalypse hit? My family had stripped my apartment bare, taken my rations, and left me to fend for myself with a cold, unforgiving curse on their lips.

Now, Lisa had supposedly returned, and my mother expected me to fall right back into line, playing the dutiful daughter while they demanded my money, my time, and my compliance.

The phone buzzed again, vibrating aggressively against the wood.

I reached out, picked it up, and pressed accept.

"Serena!" My mother’s voice pierced the speaker, sharp, shrill, and dripping with immediate accusation. "Where have you been?! Do you have any idea how many times I’ve called you?!"

I closed my eyes, taking a slow, steadying breath. The air in the study felt suddenly cold.

The world was ending in six days. My family was still playing the same miserable games.

"I've been busy," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"Busy? Your sister is finally home after all these years, and you're 'busy'?! Lisa is sitting right here, she's traumatized, she needs clothes, she needs money to get back on her feet, and you haven't even called to welcome her back!"

A dark, cold smile touched the corners of my lips.

Let them come.

In this life, I wasn't the daughter who owed them an apology. I wasn't the ATM for a family of parasites.

If they wanted to play games while the world was dying, I was more than ready to show them how the game was really played.
