Chapter 1

Author: River Snapshot
My hand shook as I called Marielle, my heart pounding.

As long as she didn't answer, everything I'd just seen wasn't real.

A second later, Marielle—still holding the baby—pulled out her phone.

She clearly hesitated for a few seconds. Then she rejected the call.

My phone went silent at the exact same moment.

I was standing just around the corner behind them, close enough to hear every word.

"Honey, you're on baby duty tonight. I've been carrying Owen around all day. My arms are about to fall off."

Chase had always been proud. In all these years, hardly any woman had ever caught his eye, and this was the first time I'd seen him so attentive and gentle.

Marielle leaned in and kissed him on the lips, her voice sugary sweet. "My poor husband. Go home and get some rest."

Husband.

That one word shattered the last of my illusions.

The ring box in my hand seemed to burn, as if it were mocking me for how stupid I'd been all these years.

Chase had been secretly married for two years. He never once posted a picture of his wife, yet he was always telling me to break up with Marielle.

And every time I brought up marriage, Marielle always had some reason to put it off.

She said she didn't want to hold back my career. She told me to go after my dreams.

Only now did I understand. Her idea of "not holding me back" was marrying my best friend and having his child.

The moment their car pulled away, a message from Marielle came in.

The wording was serious, but every line was full of concern.

"I was in a meeting and couldn't pick up. Stop staying up so late to call me. It breaks my heart."

Five years of long-distance, and she still kept track of the time difference perfectly. Her lies were seamless.

On countless nights, Marielle had dragged herself out of bed in the small hours to video call me, and the background was always dark.

I'd hated that she was losing sleep for me, but she always patiently told me it didn't matter.

She'd always supported me in building my career abroad. She never once complained.

Thunder cracked across the sky. Resentment and humiliation surged through me until my eyes burned.

My phone rang. It was Chase.

"Weston, tomorrow's my son's first birthday. You're his godfather, so don't forget the gift!

"My wife and I loved what you sent when he was born."

Every word was another knife in my heart.

The rain kept drizzling down, as miserable as I felt.

Tomorrow was my tenth anniversary with Marielle. I'd planned to propose to her that day.

Back at the hotel, I called Marielle five more times. I wanted to hear her explain it herself.

She rejected all five calls in a row.

On the sixth try, she finally picked up, but this time she sounded impatient.

"Weston, I already told you to get some sleep. Whatever it is, it can wait."

My voice came out hoarse. "Tomorrow's our tenth anniversary. Isn't there anything you want to say?"

The line went instantly silent.

I waited.

I waited for her to admit that she'd married Chase. To explain why she'd lied to me for so long.

All I got was a flimsy excuse.

"I'm sorry, Weston. Work's been crazy lately, and I forgot our anniversary.

"I have to work late tomorrow too, so I can't video call. Next year, I promise I'll fly out and spend it with you."

Even now, she still couldn't come clean.

I didn't push her any further.

I just deleted my request to transfer back home and wrote a new application instead.

Marielle, there wouldn't be a next year for us.

I never expected that right after I'd dealt with the Knox family, Chase would show up too.He came all the way to Wrenmouth and waited outside my office building to corner me.I hadn't seen him in a while. He'd lost a lot of weight, and his face was white as a sheet."Weston, I'm begging you. Talk to Marielle. You're the only one she listens to."Owen just turned one. This is when he needs both his parents the most. For the sake of all our years as brothers, please help me out!"I looked coldly at this man who'd been driven to the brink of a breakdown."Chase, I've already made it clear to Marielle that we're over. If she wants to divorce you, that's her business. It's got nothing to do with me."I've also told you that whatever we had between us is gone. I'm not going to help you. Leave."Chase clutched my sleeve and begged again. "Weston, I really love Marielle. I don't want a divorce..."Looking at him, all I felt was how absurd it was.Not long ago, Chase had been telling

Before walking over, I'd sworn to myself that I wouldn't get upset. But thinking back on everything, I still teared up in spite of myself.Marielle was crying too. She grabbed my hand and apologized."Weston, it's all my fault. I'll go back and divorce Chase right now. Please, just give me one more chance, okay?"You know how I feel about you. You're the only one I love. What happened with Chase was an accident. I was drunk that night and wasn't thinking straight..."I shook her hand off in disgust and pushed her out into the rain."Marielle, stop pretending to be so devoted. It just makes me sick."Once might've been an accident. But what about after that? Chase had the guts to admit you two slept together plenty of times. You can't even own up to it?"Marielle hurried to deny it. "That's not true! Chase lied to you. It really was only once, and then I got pregnant. If you don't believe me, you can check..."She pulled out her phone to show me proof, but I tossed it back into

I saw Marielle again two days later. The rainy season in Wrenmouth always dragged on forever. I'd barely seen a clear day since I arrived.Marielle stood under an umbrella on the street corner across from my office for hours, still as a statue. She'd been coming for days. Every time she started walking toward me, I got straight into my car and drove off. There was nothing left to say between us, and I didn't want to keep getting tangled up with her.But Marielle was stubborn. She came and waited there every single day.Sometimes she forgot her umbrella and got soaked to the bone. She looked forlorn, like an abandoned child. This time, I didn't run. I walked straight toward her.The moment she saw me, her eyes lit up."Weston, you finally agreed to see me!"A violent gust of wind tore the umbrella from her hand and sent it to the ground. She didn't care. She rushed over and threw her arms around me."I'm sorry, Weston. I really know I was wrong. Punish me however you want,

As soon as her plane landed, Marielle rushed to my office in Port Calvane. Her anniversary gift to me had been a custom diamond ring engraved with our initials.Unfortunately, I'd already flown home early, so I'd never received it.Marielle bought a bouquet of roses and tucked the ring inside.Over the years, she'd begged me to take her back more than once, and she knew exactly how it went.As long as she flew out to my office, brought a gift, apologized sincerely, and swallowed her pride to coax me, I'd always forgive her.Marielle waited outside the building for a long time. Fierce gusts whipped up dust and sand that swept over her. Before long, she was covered head to toe in dirt. But even after the employees had all left for the day, there was still no sign of me.Marielle rushed into the building and grabbed an employee coming down the stairs. Struggling past the language barrier, she asked where I was. After asking five or six people, she finally found out what had happ

After seeing me off, Marielle felt hollow inside. She'd seen me off more times than she could count over these five years, but never once had it been this hard to let me go.That night, Marielle worked out the time difference and eagerly placed a video call. The next second, it was declined. She called again. This time, no one picked up.She immediately switched to a regular call. Same result.Whenever we'd fought before, she'd been the one ignoring my calls while I called over and over. Now it was her turn to know how that worry felt. With no other choice, Marielle sent a message: "Weston, pick up. Don't make me worry."I still didn't reply.Marielle didn't get a moment of real sleep that night. She kept waking up to check her phone, and it woke Owen up too.For the first time, she didn't rush to comfort him. Her eyes stayed glued to her screen, terrified of missing a single message. But even after Owen had cried himself back to sleep, there was still nothing from me.She

Chase asked me to meet him at his house. After a night spent pulling myself together, I asked him calmly, "Chase, why?"Chase was gently tending to Owen, who was fast asleep. His lips curled into a smile, but his eyes were cold and mocking."Weston, Marielle is mine. I've never fought you for anything, but her? I'm never letting her go."After you two had that fight, she got completely wasted and cried in my arms. I kissed her... and she didn't push me away."I slammed my hand on the table and pointed at him. "Chase, how could you be this low?"Chase kept going, smug. "And Marielle and I slept together more than once after that."You two have been long-distance for so many years, I've probably slept with her more than you have. Marielle says... you never could satisfy her in bed."I couldn't hold back my rage anymore. I lunged at him and grabbed him by the collar.Chase stumbled back, shielding the crying baby, but my fist still caught him square in the eye.Marielle burst th
