Chapter 3

작가: Bagel
Over the years, Grayson had tossed the word "marriage" around countless times.

The first time was when he signed his massive contract extension. We tasted financial freedom for the first time. We stared at the numbers in the bank account, too excited to sleep all night.

Win a championship, sign a huge contract, marry the girl he loved.

Grayson pinned me against the floor-to-ceiling windows, panting as he said he wanted to marry me. He promised to start a family and be together forever.

But soon after, he met Cici, an influencer and known puck bunny, at a club party. Cici cried her eyes out, saying she was being exploited by her former agency. She claimed she couldn't even pay her rent, and had to pay off her family's debts.

Grayson was suddenly hit with a savior complex. That very day, he put Cici on his personal payroll and offered her a salary way above the market rate.

He only gave me a heads-up after it was a done deal. "Blair, Cici is really pitiful. She reminds me of when I had absolutely nothing. I want to help her."

"If we have a wedding now, I will definitely need to take time off. If the sponsors drop me, we won't be able to pay Cici's salary. Let's just wait another two years. Once I win the Cup, I will give you a wedding that will shock the whole league."

For the next few seasons, he dangled marriage in front of me every single year.

When they made the playoffs, he said we would get married.

On my birthday, he said we would get married. Even when I was hospitalized for pregnancy complications, he swore he would buy a diamond ring and propose as soon as I was discharged.

But in the end, it was always Cici getting drunk at a nightclub and needing him to pick her up. Or Cici's heater breaking and absolutely needing him to fix it.

Even on the day of my scheduled abortion, Grayson didn't show up. He just had his assistant transfer some money to me.

"Baby, I really wanted to go with you, but if the paparazzi caught me outside a clinic, it would be too much trouble."

"Besides, Cici said she wants to learn how to ski, and I am helping her pick out gear right now. Be a good girl, listen to the doctor, and don't cause a scene."

"Once this blows over and your body is recovered, I promise I will make it up to you with a perfect engagement trip."

I don't know if he was also thinking about the past, but a flash of discomfort crossed Grayson's face.

He cleared his throat, trying to cover it up. "I mean it this time. I already bought the ring. I will propose to you on that tropical island you love so much."

I hadn't even planned to keep going in circles with him.

But seeing him now, spewing empty promises and using someone's genuine devotion as a stepping stone, a sudden wave of anger lodged in my chest.

Anger for my past self, the girl who split her scholarship money in half and shoved it into his hands to pay for his training camp fees.

So I held out my hand. "Show me."

He froze for a second. "Show you what?"

"The itinerary for the island and the receipt for the ring. Didn't you say everything was prepared?"

Grayson was instantly speechless.

I didn't waste any time. I snatched his unlocked phone right out of his hand, opened his banking app, and scrolled through his recent transaction history.

Five hundred thousand dollars, paid in full for a sports car.

Fifty thousand dollars, directly paying off Cici's credit card bill for high-end jewelry.

Twenty thousand dollars, a limited-edition Birkin bag.

And at the very bottom of the long list of expenses sat a thirty-nine-dollar Amazon receipt.

I clicked on it.

Sure enough, it was a cheap, discounted moissanite ring. His chat log with customer service still showed a careless message: Just engrave the letter B or whatever.

I then switched to his text messages with Cici and searched for the name of the island.

Just as I thought. Two days ago, Cici had thrown a massive fit. She complained that he never took her anywhere nice and that she was sick of only meeting him in underground parking garages.

Grayson had immediately booked that expensive island villa to placate her.

"Once I deal with the media, I will take you to the beach to relax, okay?"

"But we have to bring Blair. As long as she is there as my agent, the paparazzi won't write garbage about us, and the agency will cover all the expenses."

Staring at the screen, I couldn't help but let out a broken laugh. I laughed until my eyes stung.

"Grayson, is this your idea of making up for my engagement trip?"

"A thirty-nine-dollar discount Amazon ring. And a three-person island getaway where you bring me along as your cover just to keep your little influencer happy."

"Ten years, and this is all I am worth to you? Thirty-nine dollars?"

I looked at them coldly. "What does that have to do with me?"They froze in place, clearly not expecting me to be so unyielding. Before they could even recover enough to keep begging, Stella had already marched over, gripping her tennis racket. She didn't even look them in the eye. She just wiped her racket and threw a cold order toward the door:"Where the hell is security! Throw these broke, trashy losers out of here!""Put their ugly mugs into the facial recognition system and notify the whole league. From now on, add these guys to the permanent ban list for every tournament!"A year later, on the night Stella successfully lifted her Grand Slam trophy. The team was popping champagne in the hotel suite to celebrate. Everyone raised their glasses and made bold declarations. They would conquer the French Open next season, and the season after that, until all four Grand Slams were locked in the trophy case.Meanwhile, at the very bottom of the sports news trending list hung a small pus

I stayed on the island for exactly two whole months.I completely washed away the exhaustion and resentment I had accumulated over ten years in the ocean water.During this time, I occasionally checked Twitter and the sports news. I saw that Grayson truly never made it back to the ice. The team officially launched their breach of contract lawsuit, and the massive penalties pushed him to the brink of bankruptcy.Back when he was trying to make Cici famous, he had personally co-signed several loans for her. Now that everything was exposed, not only was he facing massive claims, but the team had demanded his full signing bonus back. Add in the exorbitant legal fees, and his entire cash flow was drained dry.He even posted several handwritten letters on Instagram. He thanked the fans who had stayed with him all the way, and publicly apologized for his inflated ego and for failing everyone who supported him after he got famous. He used other people's phones to call me frantically. He even

He and Blair had broken up and gotten back together many times over the last ten years, having countless explosive fights. But they had a bottom line. No matter how angry they got, they were never allowed to casually threaten a breakup. And they were absolutely never allowed to block each other. And all these years, they had genuinely kept that rule.Even when he forgot her birthday, even when he made her go to that surgery alone, even when he stood her up time and time again for Cici.Even when Blair glared at him with tears falling from her eyes, she never actually spat out the words "break up." She never had the heart to delete him or clear their text messages from high school all the way to now.It wasn't until this very moment that a delayed, creeping terror finally set in. Blair had truly, completely discarded him.The details he had constantly overlooked began to surface one by one.Blair had changed his custom ringtone.Blair had flown alone to the island where they had promis

Sure enough, the furious team owners and sponsors, eager to cut ties and sue for damages, immediately leaked these highly egotistical recordings and chat logs to all the major media outlets. In less than half an hour, these internal documents dominated the front pages of North American sports news. The outraged media and his former teammates, who used to put their bodies on the line to set up his shots, were so angry they wanted to beat him to a pulp.Fans even started their own trending hashtag: #BanGrayson.Several vets who usually defended the team's culture the most posted public statements condemning him. "Hockey is a team sport. An arrogant prick who despises his own teammates doesn't deserve to wear this sweater."Public opinion exploded instantly. Grayson and his so-called "brothers" were completely dumbfounded when they scrolled through Twitter. It wasn't until the team officially announced the termination of his contract and prepared a lawsuit for damages that they abruptly

My best friends also flooded me with video calls over the last few days. They always knew my situation, so they didn't have much extra curiosity.Hearing the news, they were absolutely thrilled, clapping and cheering on the video call: "Blair, you finally dumped that arrogant prick! Beautifully done!""It's a shame I used up all my vacation days for the year, otherwise I would definitely fly out there to pop champagne with you.""When you get back, we absolutely have to get together. I am going to talk trash about that piece of shit Grayson for three days straight! Having a gem like our Blair and not cherishing her, he is completely fucking blind."As they cursed, the topic started to drift. They started spamming the group chat with links to luxury apartments in Los Angeles, helping me scout out several highly secure neighborhoods. They even sent pictures from several purebred golden retriever breeders."Instead of waiting around for Grayson, you might as well raise a golden retriever

After dropping that line, I hung up.I flipped my phone to "Do Not Disturb" and went back to enjoying my vacation.Grayson was probably completely dumbfounded. He fired off a string of question marks before finally typing in disbelief: "Blair, are you serious right now?"I ignored him.I just let myself soak entirely in the sunlight. It had been years since I could sleep in naturally without a single worry. Every day, I drank cocktails, sunbathed, surfed in the ocean, and then video-called my parents and best friends to chat.Being far away from the man whose messes I had to clean up daily and his group of parasites made these past few days feel incredibly liberating. While on vacation, I also received countless offers from top-tier sports agencies. In the North American sports scene, it might be impossible for a disgraced, benched player to make a comeback. But for an ace agent who built a superstar from a bottom-tier rookie with her bare hands, striking out on her own was a walk in t
