Chapter 3

Life Elegy
I thought back to when I was sixteen and saw Zane for the first time in the library.

He was sitting by the window, sunlight spilling through the glass and softening the edges of his profile. With his head lowered, he moved a pencil quickly across his sketchbook, so absorbed in his drawing that it seemed as though nothing else around him existed.

In that moment, my heart skipped a beat.

After that, I started paying attention to him without even meaning to.

I learned that he was one of the top students in our grade, that he was talented at drawing and dreamed of becoming an architect, and that he was naturally reserved and kept most people at a distance.

None of that stopped me from wanting to get closer to him.

For all three years of high school, I pushed myself to do better for one reason: I wanted to get into the same college he did.

When it came time to submit our college choices, I gave up a guaranteed admission offer from a prestigious science and engineering university without hesitation and put Bayridge School of Architecture at the top of my list.

My homeroom teacher called me in for a talk, and my parents were just as strongly opposed.

"Tessa, with your grades in science and math, you could get into a much better school and choose a field with far better prospects. Architecture isn't right for you. It's a demanding career."

But I wouldn't listen.

There was only one thought in my head: I wanted to go wherever Zane went.

Throughout college, I followed in his footsteps until I had practically become his shadow. If he took an elective, I signed up for it. If he joined a club, I joined too. Whenever he went to the library, I found some way to sit nearby.

My friends all thought I was being foolish.

"Tessa, someone like Zane doesn't have room for feelings. If you keep chasing after him like this, you're only going to be the one who gets hurt."

I didn't believe them.

I thought that if I tried hard enough and held on long enough, eventually I would get through to him.

By graduation, Zane had received an offer from one of the country's most prestigious architecture firms. I turned down a much higher-paying position with an international company and applied to the same firm he had chosen.

During my interview, one of the panelists asked, "Why do you want to work here?"

"Because there's someone here I look up to and hope to learn from."

As I answered, I looked toward Zane, who was seated at the far end of the interview panel. He kept his head down, writing something on his evaluation form, and never once looked at me.

I was hired anyway, and I became his assistant.

For the next five years, I handled the endless details of his work, organized his files, brought him coffee, and stayed late whenever he worked overtime.

I had a hand in every project he designed, even if my part was little more than minor support work, and I never minded any of it.

I truly believed that if I stayed by his side long enough, one day that companionship would become a life together.

Then came the landslide.

The instant the rocks began crashing down and the mountainside gave way, I didn't stop to think. I threw myself over Zane on instinct and shielded him with my own body.

Even when the pain hit, a part of me felt relieved.

At least he was safe.

Just before I lost consciousness, I saw panic written plainly across his face and heard him shouting my name.

"Tessa! Tessa!"

It was the first time I had ever seen such raw emotion from him.

While I was in the hospital, he came to see me every day. He still didn't say much, but he brought me books, adjusted my hospital bed when I was uncomfortable, and quietly held my hand whenever the nurse changed my dressings.

Back then, I thought that nearly losing my life to save him might be enough for him to finally come to love me.

Looking back now, that sentiment was almost laughable.

After taking three days off, I returned to the architecture firm.

Six months later, the three new school buildings and the community clinic in Queenridge County were completed. On opening day, the village was decked out for the celebration. Children raced into the bright new classrooms with backpacks bouncing on their shoulders, running their hands over the brand-new desks and chairs as they beamed with excitement. The local herders gathered around the clinic, clasping Mark's hands and mine as they repeated their thanks in halting English.I stood among the crowd, watching the national flag ripple beneath the clear blue sky while Shane flew kites with the children nearby. When one of the kites climbed higher than all the others, Shane came running over and handed me a bottle of warm water, barely able to contain his excitement."Tessa, look! Mr. Tanner says that's the highest anyone in the village has ever flown one!"His hand was still warm and dry, and his eyes were as bright as the stars over the highlands.I took the water and caught my own refle

He didn't refuse. He opened his mouth and took the spoonful, though his eyes never left my face, as if he were trying to memorize everything about me that he had failed to notice over the years. The room was quiet except for the soft clink of the spoon against the bowl. The faint smell of disinfectant still lingered in the air, but somehow, the hospital no longer felt as suffocating as it once had. After he finished the oatmeal, I put the bowl and spoon away. "I need to get back to the development office. I still have work to do. "Shane will stay with you for now. If you need anything, you can call either the nurse or him."Zane suddenly caught my wrist. His grip wasn't tight, but there was an unmistakable plea in his eyes."Can't you stay a little longer, Tessa?"I looked down at his hand and gently pulled free. "Zane, I have work here that I need to do. The children are still waiting for their new school, and the families here are counting on us to build the clinic. "I'll come see

Zane was covered in mud. A deep cut at his temple was bleeding through the grime, his left arm was twisted at an unnatural angle, and his torn shirt revealed dark bruising underneath.Shane quickly checked him over, his expression turning serious. "Tessa, he may have fractures and internal injuries. We need to get him to a hospital now."We flagged down a passing herder's pickup and endured the rough ride to Queenridge County Hospital.I sat in the back, carefully supporting Zane's head so the jolting truck wouldn't knock him around. As the mud dried, it hardened across his face, stripping away the cool composure he usually wore. His brows were tightly drawn, his face pale, and his breathing came shallow and fast.I looked at the wound on his temple and felt none of the old rush I might once have expected. All that remained was a complicated sense of calm.By risking his life to save us, Zane had added one final, heavy weight to the ten years between us.As soon as we reached the hosp

"Zane, you didn't do anything wrong.""No!" he cut in urgently. He reached for my shoulders, but I stepped aside. His hands closed on empty air before falling heavily to his sides.I looked at him calmly. "You wanted to marry me because you felt guilty. You're here now for the same reason. You got used to having me around, and when I suddenly disappeared from your life, it unsettled you."The color drained from Zane's face. His lips trembled, but no words came.Rain ran down from the corners of his eyes, making it impossible to tell whether any of it was tears.Shane walked over and silently handed me an umbrella before taking his place beside me.Zane looked at me, then at Shane. His hand tightened around the test report until the pages crumpled beneath his fingers. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and desolate. "Is there really no chance left for us?"I slowly shook my head."Zane, you can go back to your life among the city lights, and I'll stay here under the stars. If we c

Rain came fast in the highlands, and within moments, large, cold drops were pelting my face.Shane fumbled through his backpack for a raincoat and draped it over me first, then hugged the rolled plans to his chest and ran toward a nearby herder's tent.Through the downpour, I spotted a familiar figure not far away. Most of Zane's hair was soaked through, and his black shirt clung to his back, outlining his lean frame. His gaze cut through the curtain of rain and fixed on me, and for the first time, I saw something close to panic in those eyes that had always been so indifferent."Tessa."The rain nearly drowned out his voice, but I still heard the faint rasp in it.Shane had just gotten the plans safely inside the tent when he turned and saw Zane. His expression tightened immediately. He hurried back, pulled me slightly behind him, and looked at Zane warily. "Who are you?"Zane ignored him, his eyes never leaving me. "Why did you leave without telling me?""I submitted my application

"It won't be as comfortable as what you're used to in the city, but make do for now."Mark rubbed his hands together with a smile. "If there's anything you need, just let me know. Don't hesitate.""This is already more than enough."I set down my suitcase and brushed a thin layer of dust from the windowsill. For the first time in a long while, a quiet sense of peace settled over me.The day after I unpacked, I headed out to the surrounding villages with Mark and Shane.Mark opened the project file and showed me a series of photos. The school buildings were badly run-down. Plastic sheeting covered the windows, and the desks and chairs were old and uneven. Yet the children sitting inside held their textbooks carefully, their bright eyes fixed on the lessons in front of them.During my five years at the firm, I had worked on countless designs for landmark buildings, luxury office towers, and high-end homes. Every set of plans had been polished down to the smallest detail, but not one of t
