It took me ten years to go from secretly loving Zane Shaw from afar to becoming his fiancée. For an entire decade, I lived like his shadow. I followed wherever he went and abandoned the future I had once planned for myself. Everyone said Tessa Stone loved Zane so much that she had lost herself in him. They were right. Everyone at the architecture firm knew that years ago, I'd given up a guaranteed spot at a prestigious STEM university and thrown myself into a field I knew nothing about, all for the chance to stand a little closer to him. And through it all, Zane remained as distant and indifferent toward me as ever. Except for that one time.

Ten Years of Loving You in Vain Chapter 14
Six months later, the three new school buildings and the community clinic in Queenridge County were completed. On opening day, the village was decked out for the celebration. Children raced into the bright new classrooms with backpacks bouncing on their shoulders, running their hands over the brand-new desks and chairs as they beamed with excitement. The local herders gathered around the clinic, clasping Mark's hands and mine as they repeated their thanks in halting English.I stood among the crowd, watching the national flag ripple beneath the clear blue sky while Shane flew kites with the children nearby. When one of the kites climbed higher than all the others, Shane came running over and handed me a bottle of warm water, barely able to contain his excitement."Tessa, look! Mr. Tanner says that's the highest anyone in the village has ever flown one!"His hand was still warm and dry, and his eyes were as bright as the stars over the highlands.I took the water and caught my own refle

He didn't refuse. He opened his mouth and took the spoonful, though his eyes never left my face, as if he were trying to memorize everything about me that he had failed to notice over the years. The room was quiet except for the soft clink of the spoon against the bowl. The faint smell of disinfectant still lingered in the air, but somehow, the hospital no longer felt as suffocating as it once had. After he finished the oatmeal, I put the bowl and spoon away. "I need to get back to the development office. I still have work to do. "Shane will stay with you for now. If you need anything, you can call either the nurse or him."Zane suddenly caught my wrist. His grip wasn't tight, but there was an unmistakable plea in his eyes."Can't you stay a little longer, Tessa?"I looked down at his hand and gently pulled free. "Zane, I have work here that I need to do. The children are still waiting for their new school, and the families here are counting on us to build the clinic. "I'll come see

Zane was covered in mud. A deep cut at his temple was bleeding through the grime, his left arm was twisted at an unnatural angle, and his torn shirt revealed dark bruising underneath.Shane quickly checked him over, his expression turning serious. "Tessa, he may have fractures and internal injuries. We need to get him to a hospital now."We flagged down a passing herder's pickup and endured the rough ride to Queenridge County Hospital.I sat in the back, carefully supporting Zane's head so the jolting truck wouldn't knock him around. As the mud dried, it hardened across his face, stripping away the cool composure he usually wore. His brows were tightly drawn, his face pale, and his breathing came shallow and fast.I looked at the wound on his temple and felt none of the old rush I might once have expected. All that remained was a complicated sense of calm.By risking his life to save us, Zane had added one final, heavy weight to the ten years between us.As soon as we reached the hosp

"Zane, you didn't do anything wrong.""No!" he cut in urgently. He reached for my shoulders, but I stepped aside. His hands closed on empty air before falling heavily to his sides.I looked at him calmly. "You wanted to marry me because you felt guilty. You're here now for the same reason. You got used to having me around, and when I suddenly disappeared from your life, it unsettled you."The color drained from Zane's face. His lips trembled, but no words came.Rain ran down from the corners of his eyes, making it impossible to tell whether any of it was tears.Shane walked over and silently handed me an umbrella before taking his place beside me.Zane looked at me, then at Shane. His hand tightened around the test report until the pages crumpled beneath his fingers. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and desolate. "Is there really no chance left for us?"I slowly shook my head."Zane, you can go back to your life among the city lights, and I'll stay here under the stars. If we c
