Emma's POV

I don't remember falling asleep.

One second, I was sitting at the window of the cabin, staring at the lake, trying to pretend the photo on my nightstand didn’t exist. The next, I was drifting off in the couch, clutching the knife like it was a teddy bear from my childhood.

I thought the worst had already happened. That I had hit the peak of paranoia.

I was wrong.

Because at 2:46 a.m., the glass shattered.

I jolted awake. Heart hammering. Knife in hand.

Someone had thrown a rock through the front window. Not to break in. No. This wasn’t a robbery.

It was a message.

A warning.

Or a trap.

My breathing turned sharp and shallow. I stood slowly, feet bare, glass crunching beneath me.

And then I saw him.

The boy in the hoodie.

He was inside.

I didn’t hear the door open. Didn’t hear footsteps. But he was standing at the edge of the hallway, face half in shadow, hoodie drawn up.

"You just don't get it, do you?" he whispered.

I raised the knife.

He smiled. "You should have stayed dea

Emma’s POVI didn’t know what it felt like to be hunted until that night at the cabin.I thought I’d gone far enough, erased enough tracks, made enough fake bookings and alternate itineraries. But none of that mattered. Whoever they were—they found me. They came inside. Took a photo of me while I slept. Left a message meant to scramble my sanity.Still pretending you don’t remember? Let me help you.I couldn’t breathe when I saw those words again. Not because of what they said but because of what they meant. This wasn’t random. This wasn’t some obsessed stranger. This was personal.I left the cabin at dawn. Drove without stopping. I didn’t tell anyone where I was going......not even Bella. I didn’t want to risk leading the danger back to anyone I loved. Not again. But I needed to see Xander. I needed safety. I needed answers.---The guards outside his penthouse didn’t recognize me at first. My hair was a mess, eyes hollowed out from no sleep, clothes wrinkled from two days of paranoi

  • Terms and Temptations: The CEO spoils me silly   Chapter 18: Breathing Room

Emma's POV I need an escape. Not just a walk around the block, not another coffee run with Danielle or a quiet dinner with Xander where the silence between us says everything we’re too afraid to admit. I need a break. A real one. Far away from the shadows that have begun creeping back into my life. This second chance—this life—was supposed to be different. But it’s not. The air feels the same. Heavy. Tainted. The Polaroid. The boy in the hoodie. The bloodstained note that read "Finish what you started." All of it was suffocating me. One breath at a time. --- I stared at the bloodstained note again. It was still on my dresser, weighted down by the edge of my hairbrush like some twisted souvenir. The handwriting—so elegant, almost gentle—mocked me. Like a whisper in my ear: You don't belong here. Not anymore. My heart hadn’t stopped racing since it arrived. I slept with one eye open, one hand under my pillow gripping the scissors I now carried around like a weapon. I was

Emma's POVI didn’t sleep that night.Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the boy in the hoodie. Heard his voice again. You were supposed to stay dead. The words gnawed at me like teeth under my skin. They wrapped around my ribs and tightened every time I breathed.I sat curled on the corner of my bed, knees drawn to my chest, the unopened shopping bag with the red dress sitting like a ghost on the dresser. Danielle had stayed for a while after we got back, pacing like a bodyguard, muttering about the security footage she had already requested from the boutique and nearby buildings. She wanted to tell Xander immediately.I told her not to.I couldn’t explain why. Maybe I didn’t want to see the look in his eyes. That mix of worry and something else—something deeper. Like he knew more than he was letting on.Or maybe I just wasn’t ready to admit that I was scared.Terrified.But not of the boy.Of what he said. What you did.The problem was, I didn’t know what he meant.---The next morn

Emma's POVThe sky outside the penthouse windows was a muted gray, heavy with clouds but holding back the rain. It mirrored the haze in my head—the static that had settled in ever since the phone call. The raspy voice. The warning."You don’t know me. But you should be careful. There are people more dangerous than Diane watching you."The words played on repeat like a broken record in my mind.I hadn’t told Xander. Not because I didn’t want to.Because I didn’t know how.I was curled up on the sofa, nursing a cup of coffee I barely sipped, when my phone rang again. I braced myself, expecting another unknown number. But this one was familiar. Danielle.I answered on the third ring."Don’t tell me you’re still sulking," her voice came with a mix of teasing and gentle concern."Not sulking," I murmured. "Just thinking.""Well, stop it. Put on something cute. We’re going out.""Out?""You need to breathe, Emma. I need to breathe. And we’re going shopping. Retail therapy is good for the so

Emma’s POVI didn’t speak to Xander the entire morning.I moved through the penthouse like a ghost, brushing past him without a glance, letting my silence carve space between us. Every time he tried to say something, I either left the room or turned up the volume of whatever I was doing. I refused to give him what he wanted: a confrontation he could control. Not this time.My phone was blowing up with calls from unknown numbers, messages from accounts I didn’t recognize. Half the internet thought I was Xander Blake’s mistress. The other half thought I was a gold digger. No one was close to the truth. And the truth? It didn’t matter anymore. Not when the world had already picked a side.I stood by the balcony doors, watching the city thrum below, a steaming mug of untouched tea in my hands. My reflection in the glass looked calm. But inside, I was lava.Behind me, I heard his footsteps."Emma," he said quietly.I didn’t turn."I didn’t leak anything. I didn’t even tell anyone."I said
