Chapter 1

Author: Melody Writ
Today was Luke Weston's little get-together with his friends, and, of course, I ended up late. Something last minute popped up.

I rushed to the private room and pushed the door open. For a second, the whole vibe inside froze. Ignoring it, I slid into the seat next to Luke like nothing happened.

His friends started trading looks, their smirks loud enough to hear. Then one of them piped up in Italian, "Hey, how about a toast for Luke and his engagement to the Junkin heiress?"

My fingers tightened around my fork until they ached.

Luke just smiled. "What's there to toast? Save it for the wedding."

The same guy didn't miss a beat. "So, when's the big day?"

Luke glanced at me, throwing one of his fake "don't worry" smiles before answering in Italian, "About a month, I think. Can't remember the exact date."

Everyone turned to me.

Someone else cut in. "And Elena? Are you guys breaking up?"

Luke's tone was indifferent. "It's just a convenience thing. Elena's the one I love. Marriage doesn't change that—we'll do our own thing."

He swirled his wine glass, the deep red catching the light. That color—it reminded me of the invitation I found at home yesterday.

I could still feel that rush of excitement when I saw it. That elegant design, the thick cardstock. For a split second, I thought it was finally happening—he was going to propose.

But then I opened it.

The groom's name was Luke. The bride? Nora Junkin.

The room exploded with teasing laughter.

"Wow, Luke, a real romantic!" one of his friends said with a grin. "By the way, are we sure Elena doesn't understand Italian?"

Someone else immediately jumped in, laughing harder. "Come on, what kind of background does Elena even have? No way she had the chance to learn Italian."

I bit the inside of my cheek, holding onto my carefully crafted ignorance. They had no clue. I wasn't some small-town girl out of her depth—I was the heiress of Crestwynd, the capital city.

When we first started dating, I played the part of someone ordinary. I wanted to stand on my own after college, not just be the sheltered daughter of a powerful family.

Luke's family was a big deal in Seavora, and for months, I tested his feelings, waiting to see if he loved me for real. He passed every test—or at least, I thought he had. I believed I'd found the person I'd spend my life with.

I'd even been gearing up to tell him the truth, to take him home and let him see the life I'd hidden from him.

But now, all I could think about was that stupid invitation. He'd been whispering sweet things to me while agreeing to marry someone else for power and status. And now? Here he was, casually hanging out with his friends, planning that future right in front of me.

It made me sick.

At that moment, I knew there was no point in coming clean. He didn't deserve to know who I really was.

Luke's family was a mess anyway—power struggles everywhere. His dad wasn't even the firstborn, and they were all clawing at each other for a piece of Weston Group's inheritance. When his grandfather got sick last month, Luke probably saw marrying Nora Junkin, with her family's stakes in the company, as his best move.

I closed my eyes, shutting out the noise around me. It was over. He could have his inheritance drama while I returned to claim what was rightfully mine. Everyone would get their bright future—just not together.

After a few more rounds of drinks, the conversation started winding down. People were getting up, calling it a night.

I stood too, ready to leave with Luke and end this nightmare once and for all.

He slipped an arm around my waist like nothing had changed. "Elena, how about we—"

His phone buzzed loudly, cutting him off mid-sentence.

Luke stormed off, leaving Nora crumpled on the floor, her eyes blazing with one thought: Elena. Her life was falling apart, one bad move at a time—pissing off me, wrecking the bidding process, and now Luke dumping her. Desperate? That didn't even scratch the surface. She'd deleted every trace of my relationship with Luke, made up a fake five-year love story, and thought her lies were airtight. But nope. I had receipts—security footage and every shady text she'd sent me—and I wasn't holding back. The video didn't just blow up her lies. It caught Luke and his friends spilling tea in Italian, admitting the engagement was just a business deal. Oh, and yeah, it confirmed me and Luke had been together for three years. And those texts? Straight-up proof she'd known about me the whole time and went through with the engagement anyway. Her petty little taunts? The internet ate her alive. The tables turned overnight. All that hate I'd been getting? Insta-transfer to Nora and Luke. People hat

My good mood didn't last. By morning, my phone was blowing up with notifications—one abusive message after another. It was nonstop. I stared at the chaos, completely confused, until a call from a friend broke through."Elena! Have you seen what's online? Nora Junkin has lost her mind! She's accusing you of being a homewrecker. You. Can you believe it? And, of course, people are eating it up! You need to shut this down and make her pay for this nonsense!"She barely paused for air, unloading everything in one breath.Apparently, after Nora's humiliating exit at the banquet, she couldn't deal. So, she went full scorched earth, using her engagement to Luke as an excuse to spin some ridiculous story online. She claimed I'd come between them, even throwing out "evidence" that Luke and I had lived together after their engagement. And people bought it. The headline—[Heiress of Nova Corp Accused of Breaking Up an Engaged Couple]—spread like wildfire, fueled by Nora's fake receipts and tra

The car pulled up in front of the banquet hall, and I stepped out, ready to head straight in. A few steps ahead, I realized Oliver wasn't following.Turning back, I found him standing there, looking kind of... out of it."What's wrong?" I asked. He pressed his lips together, then gave me this pointed look. "Most people walk into the banquet arm-in-arm with their date."Oh. My bad. I coughed, feeling a little awkward, then held out my arm. "Alright, let's do this."As we walked, the question popped out before I could stop it. "Have we met before?"He paused, his lips tightening briefly. "Yeah. We went to the same summer camp as kids. Ring any bells?"Summer camp?It took a second, but then I remembered. Oliver Judd. Back then, he had this broody vibe and hair so long it practically swallowed his face. The other kids had iced him out, and that kind of thing always bugged me. So, I made a point to talk to him, and we actually hit it off. Now, looking at him—tall, put-together, a

Luke's hand froze midair, his face dark as he stared at the screenshots scattered across the floor. His voice was barely a whisper. "Nora... this is all your fault."Meanwhile, I slept like a rock, completely unaware of Luke's late-night meltdown. The next morning, I was up early, heading straight to Nova Corp. As the newly appointed CEO, I felt ready to prove myself. News that the Seinfeld family's daughter was taking charge spread fast—every corner of the industry was buzzing about it.While I was stepping into my role, Luke was drowning his misery at some private club, surrounded by his so-called friends. They were trying to joke their way through his mood."Come on, Luke, don't be like this," one of them said. "There's no way Elena's serious about breaking up.""Yeah, exactly. Women like her always play hard to get. Give her space—she'll come crawling back."The words hung in the air like poison, until Luke slammed his glass to the floor, shattering the moment. "Shut up! The second I stepped off the plane at Crestwynd Airport, I spotted Raphael, our butler, practically glowing as he stood by the curb. He didn't waste a second, hustling over to swing open the car door for me."Miss Seinfeld, please, hop in."I slid in, eyeing him suspiciously. "Raphael, why are you here? Where's the driver?""It's been years since you've been home. You think I'd let you arrive alone?"Next thing I knew, we were pulling up to the family villa. The second I stepped out, a crew of house staff burst through the doors, shouting in perfect sync, "Welcome home!"I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. "Mom!"Sure enough, she came sweeping down the grand staircase, all smiles. "So? How was it? I modeled this after that TV show you used to love. Pretty fabulous, huh?"I barely had time to react before she yanked me upstairs. And then I saw it.She hadn't been exaggerating in her calls—not even a little. My room looked like a hurricane had hit a jewelry store and a fi

When I opened my eyes, I was in a hospital bed. Lucky for me, the injuries weren't too bad.Luke sat beside me, his face shadowed with guilt. "Elena, I'm sorry," he said. "I only protected Nora because I was thinking about our families' partnership. You can be mad at me—just, please, don't ignore me."His eyes were sincere, almost pleading. If I hadn't known about his upcoming wedding, I might've believed him. When I stayed silent, Luke kept apologizing, stumbling over his words in desperation. Then, he suddenly remembered something. "Isn't your birthday coming up next week? Elena, what do you want? I'll get it for you—anything!"I finally looked at him. "Anything? Then get me a ticket to Crestwynd.""Crestwynd?" He blinked. "Why do you want to go to Crestwynd?"Before I could answer, he jumped in with his own assumption. "Oh, for a vacation?"I didn't bother correcting him and just nodded.Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone and booked the ticket right there. When he f
