Chapter 5

Author: Rui Rui
I was still processing what she meant when Nancy suddenly lunged at me.

Before I could react, she grabbed my hand and slapped herself across the face. Hard. Once. Twice. Three times.

"I'm so sorry, Miss Martinez. This is all my fault. If I hadn't gotten sick, you wouldn't have to give up your heart. If hitting me makes you feel better, go ahead, hit me."

A gust of air whipped past me before I even saw him coming. A brutal shove sent me flying sideways. I stumbled, my head cracking against the wall. Something warm trickled down my forehead, red flooding my vision. But Gregory didn't even glance at me. He was too busy pulling Nancy into his arms.

"What happened? Are you hurt?"

Nancy collapsed against him, tears streaming down her face. "Don't blame Miss Martinez. She's being forced to give me her heart, of course she's upset. Whatever she does to me, I deserve it."

Looking at her pathetic, pitiful act, Gregory's face twisted, anger mixed with tenderness.

And all of that anger landed on me.

His eyes cut into me like a blade. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're the one who agreed to donate, and now you're causing trouble? I made this decision, not her. Why are you taking it out on Nancy?"

He didn't even give me a chance to speak. He just turned to Nancy. "How many times did she hit you?"

Nancy looked up weakly, biting her lip. "Three..."

"Gregory, please. Just let it go."

He stroked her hair gently, soothing her. Then he turned to his security team. "You heard her. I want thirty."

Dark shadows closed in around me. Through the gaps, I watched Gregory lift Nancy into his arms like she was made of glass.

Then the first slap landed. Then another. And another.

It hurt. God, it hurt so much. My eyes were barely staying open.

If Grayson were here, he would protect me.

But he wasn't. No one was.

---

I don't know how long it took, but eventually the guards dragged me back to the Evans estate.

For the next few days, I was confined to the house. Gregory didn't come back.

I found out what he was doing through the news.

Prime-time coverage. A full ten minutes dedicated to New York's most eligible bachelor and his relentless pursuit of the woman he truly loved.

He bought a luxury yacht. Just to see her smile.

She liked diamonds, so he flew to South Africa and bid on the world's largest pink diamond. Delivered it to her personally.

She couldn't eat, so he brought in Michelin-star chefs. When that didn't work, he cooked for her himself.

Every society girl in New York was green with envy.

I watched it all like it had nothing to do with me.

Three days later, Nancy's birthday.

Gregory's assistant showed up with a gown. I was to attend the party and apologize to Nancy in front of everyone.

I didn't want to go. But the assistant's words were ice. "Mr. Evans said you're coming, whether you like it or not. Even if I have to drag you there myself."

For Nancy, he would toss my feelings aside without a second thought.

I stared at my reflection, cheeks still flushed, marks not fully healed. My eyes burned as I reached for the foundation, patting layer after layer over the bruises, trying to hide what they had done.

Almost there.

I told myself, over and over.

Almost there. The mission would end soon. And I would finally get what I came for.

The last day, he wanted a proper goodbye. We agreed to meet at the lake in Central Park.It was winter now. Few people around. Just a few swans paddling near the shore, begging for food.I tossed them pieces of bread, and they let out happy little calls.Gregory stood a few steps away, watching the scene with a quiet, satisfied look.If he could see this every day, how wonderful that would be.But it was only a fantasy. The minutes ticked by, pulling him closer to the moment he would have to leave. One last time, he let himself be selfish. He walked up to me and pulled me into his arms. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me, and my first instinct was to push him away. But he was taller, stronger. I couldn't break free.It made me uneasy. I didn't want to linger in his hold. I just wanted to get out.Just as I was starting to panic, a firm hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me out of his embrace.I spun around, startled, and met Grayson's gentle eyes. For the first time in a long ti

Early the next morning, I showed up at the hospital with breakfast.Gregory was already packed, standing by the door when I arrived. He smiled when he saw me and walked over to greet me. "Already checked myself out. Different world, but basically the same process."I stared at him, confused. He seemed like a different person. One night, and suddenly he was this at peace?Seeing my doubt, he explained. "I thought it through. The only reason I was so hung up on this was because I thought you loved me that much and I had never treated you right.""Now that we've cleared the air, I have no reason to hold on.""And you were right. My mission was to get you to forgive me. Since you have, I can go back anytime.""But before I do, could you give me three days?""Don't worry. I won't ask for anything crazy. I just want to have a meal with you. See some sights. Then I'll go. I won't bother you again."I hesitated, then gave a small nod.Even Gregory hadn't realized that real love meant letting g

For the first time, I realized how humiliating it was to lay everything bare.I had done so much for him, yes. But I had also lied to him.And I had given him my heart, a debt paid in full. Neither of us owed the other anything. But now he had saved me, and that put me in his debt again.I hated that. Those hundred tasks? I had done them willingly. He did not owe me an apology.I thought for a long time before I spoke."Gregory. I never loved you. I got close to you for another man."His face changed instantly. The worry in his brow spread like tangled vines."You're lying. Cynthia, tell me you're lying.""You made that up so I would give up. I don't believe it. Not a single word."I did not stop. I kept going."Five years ago, my lover died saving me in a car crash.""I was broken, completely hollow. Then a system appeared and gave me a mission: do one hundred things for a man, and my lover would come back to life. That man was you.""Think about it. Wasn't my appearance strange?""Be

The air was filled with screams and the pounding of footsteps. I stared at the pool of blood on the floor, my mind spinning.Him. Of all people, him.The ambulance arrived fast and took him to the hospital. Since no one knew him here, I had to go with. Grayson came along too, worried, unwilling to let me face it alone. In the hallway outside the ER, the surgery light blinked red. Just the two of us.Seeing how pale I had gone, Grayson spoke first. "You seem really worried about him. Is he a friend?"I flinched, then shook my head. "No. But he got hurt because of me."A beat of silence passed. Then I looked up at him. "Grayson. Can I tell you a story?"He nodded, and without a word, slipped off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.I sniffled and began."Five years ago, you had that accident. I was shattered. I wanted to follow you. But then a system showed up.""It told me that if I did one hundred things for a man, you would come back to me.""So to be with you, I didn't hesitat

The next morning, I stepped outside, and there Gregory was. Waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He must have been standing there for a while. Dew clung to his long eyelashes. He was striking, always had been. Tall, sharp features, refined. He looked completely out of place in this modest neighborhood. The moment he spotted me, Gregory's face lit up. He strode over, holding up a bag of breakfast."Cynthia!"He pushed it into my hands, his voice almost pleading. "These are all your favorites. I got them myself."I stared at the bag in front of me and couldn't summon a single smile.I let out a tired sigh and met his eyes. "I already told you. Don't come back. Why won't you just listen?"He flinched. The proud, untouchable Gregory, reduced to this. "I just want to be good to you."I pushed his hand away. "I don't need you to be good to me.""Gregory, I'll say this one more time. I'm not forgiving you because I never blamed you in the first place.""What's past is past. I've started a new

After parting ways with Gregory, I was still a little shaken. He had no idea why I'd been by his side all those years. If his system mission had anything to do with me—did that mean he'd keep showing up in my life?It bothered me. My feelings about Gregory were complicated—messy, even. I couldn't quite name what I felt.Forget it. I shook the thought away. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Grayson's memories back.I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door, setting the fruit on the table. I tied on my apron and headed toward the kitchen."Grayson, I got your favorite persimmons today. I'll start cooking—just rest for a bit. Dinner'll be ready soon."But the voice that answered wasn't his."Hi there. I'm Grayson's coworker. He stepped out for a bit—should be back soon."I turned around. A young woman stood in the living room—pretty, with delicate features and a bright, confident smile. She introduced herself. "I'm Donna White.""We had a project to go over, so I came b
