Chapter 9

Author: Rui Rui
Even so, he sat down anyway, picking up the knife to cut the cake.

"Wait!"

I reached out and stopped him, grabbing the candles and sticking them into the cake. "You haven't made a wish yet."

Gregory looked caught off guard. His fingers—long, elegant—trembled slightly before he pulled his hand back.

He'd never had a birthday. He'd forgotten the part about candles and wishes.

Once the candles were lit, I nudged him to make a wish. He muttered something about it being annoying, but finally lowered his voice and said, "I hope Nancy's surgery goes well. That she'll be safe and sound."

The words hung in the air. His gaze drifted to me, almost unconsciously. When he saw the light in my eyes dim, something in his chest twisted.

He frowned. Then, almost as if he couldn't help himself, he added, "And I hope yours goes well too. That you'll be safe."

That was the end of it. He stood up to leave.

But right at that moment—without any warning—the chandelier above came crashing down.

The second I saw it falling toward him, my heart seized. If my mission target died, everything would fail.

I didn't think. I just launched myself at him. "Watch out!"

Shards of crystal rained down like shooting stars, the whole room turning into something out of a dream—brilliant, chaotic, beautiful.

And in the middle of that blazing light, I collapsed.

Before everything went black, I caught a glimpse of Gregory's face. He was sprinting toward me—frantic, desperate.

I must've been delirious from the impact.

Because there was no way he'd look at me like that.

I drifted in and out for what felt like forever. When I finally opened my eyes, I was in a hospital room.

Gregory was sitting by my bed. The moment he saw me wake up, his whole demeanor went icy. "Why did you do that? Do you have a death wish?"

My head was still foggy, but I knew one thing for sure—I couldn't tell him the truth.

If he'd died, how would I complete my mission? How would I bring Grayson back?

I held his gaze, steady as I could. "Because I love you."

Gregory froze. He was silent for a few seconds. "Get some rest," he said. Then he left the room.

---

The surgery date was closing in. But Gregory started acting strange.

He visited every day. Brought my favorite desserts.

Probably just making sure I wouldn't back out. Last few days—he'd want to keep me sweet.

He didn't need to worry, though. I wanted this surgery more than he did.

I'd been in bed too long. I needed to move. So I got up and walked around.

At the stairwell, I caught the sound of voices—heated, arguing.

I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. I was about to leave when I heard my own name.

Gregory and his friends. Fighting over Nancy.

"Gregory, what the hell are you thinking? You've loved Nancy your whole life. Now she's threatening to kill herself if you marry Cynthia, and you're still dragging your feet?"

A long silence. Then Gregory's voice came through, cold and measured. "If I don't marry her, she won't donate."

The others let out relieved laughs. "Relax. We've all seen how crazy Cynthia is about you. Even if you don't marry her, she'll still go through with it."

"Then you don't have to throw away your happiness. And there's still a shot with Nancy!"

"You've always wanted her, right? And honestly, I've seen the way she's been looking at you lately. No one can resist that kind of devotion."

"She won't say it out loud, but she's definitely falling for you."

They kept going, throwing argument after argument at him. But Gregory stayed quiet.

Finally, they realized something was off. "Gregory—what are you hesitating for? Wait. Don't tell me you're actually falling for Cynthia?"

That seemed to snap him back. His expression hardened, his voice dropping to ice. "Falling for her? That's never going to happen."

I smiled to myself in the hallway. Didn't stick around to hear the rest. Just turned and walked away.

The last day, he wanted a proper goodbye. We agreed to meet at the lake in Central Park.It was winter now. Few people around. Just a few swans paddling near the shore, begging for food.I tossed them pieces of bread, and they let out happy little calls.Gregory stood a few steps away, watching the scene with a quiet, satisfied look.If he could see this every day, how wonderful that would be.But it was only a fantasy. The minutes ticked by, pulling him closer to the moment he would have to leave. One last time, he let himself be selfish. He walked up to me and pulled me into his arms. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me, and my first instinct was to push him away. But he was taller, stronger. I couldn't break free.It made me uneasy. I didn't want to linger in his hold. I just wanted to get out.Just as I was starting to panic, a firm hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me out of his embrace.I spun around, startled, and met Grayson's gentle eyes. For the first time in a long ti

Early the next morning, I showed up at the hospital with breakfast.Gregory was already packed, standing by the door when I arrived. He smiled when he saw me and walked over to greet me. "Already checked myself out. Different world, but basically the same process."I stared at him, confused. He seemed like a different person. One night, and suddenly he was this at peace?Seeing my doubt, he explained. "I thought it through. The only reason I was so hung up on this was because I thought you loved me that much and I had never treated you right.""Now that we've cleared the air, I have no reason to hold on.""And you were right. My mission was to get you to forgive me. Since you have, I can go back anytime.""But before I do, could you give me three days?""Don't worry. I won't ask for anything crazy. I just want to have a meal with you. See some sights. Then I'll go. I won't bother you again."I hesitated, then gave a small nod.Even Gregory hadn't realized that real love meant letting g

For the first time, I realized how humiliating it was to lay everything bare.I had done so much for him, yes. But I had also lied to him.And I had given him my heart, a debt paid in full. Neither of us owed the other anything. But now he had saved me, and that put me in his debt again.I hated that. Those hundred tasks? I had done them willingly. He did not owe me an apology.I thought for a long time before I spoke."Gregory. I never loved you. I got close to you for another man."His face changed instantly. The worry in his brow spread like tangled vines."You're lying. Cynthia, tell me you're lying.""You made that up so I would give up. I don't believe it. Not a single word."I did not stop. I kept going."Five years ago, my lover died saving me in a car crash.""I was broken, completely hollow. Then a system appeared and gave me a mission: do one hundred things for a man, and my lover would come back to life. That man was you.""Think about it. Wasn't my appearance strange?""Be

The air was filled with screams and the pounding of footsteps. I stared at the pool of blood on the floor, my mind spinning.Him. Of all people, him.The ambulance arrived fast and took him to the hospital. Since no one knew him here, I had to go with. Grayson came along too, worried, unwilling to let me face it alone. In the hallway outside the ER, the surgery light blinked red. Just the two of us.Seeing how pale I had gone, Grayson spoke first. "You seem really worried about him. Is he a friend?"I flinched, then shook my head. "No. But he got hurt because of me."A beat of silence passed. Then I looked up at him. "Grayson. Can I tell you a story?"He nodded, and without a word, slipped off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.I sniffled and began."Five years ago, you had that accident. I was shattered. I wanted to follow you. But then a system showed up.""It told me that if I did one hundred things for a man, you would come back to me.""So to be with you, I didn't hesitat

The next morning, I stepped outside, and there Gregory was. Waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He must have been standing there for a while. Dew clung to his long eyelashes. He was striking, always had been. Tall, sharp features, refined. He looked completely out of place in this modest neighborhood. The moment he spotted me, Gregory's face lit up. He strode over, holding up a bag of breakfast."Cynthia!"He pushed it into my hands, his voice almost pleading. "These are all your favorites. I got them myself."I stared at the bag in front of me and couldn't summon a single smile.I let out a tired sigh and met his eyes. "I already told you. Don't come back. Why won't you just listen?"He flinched. The proud, untouchable Gregory, reduced to this. "I just want to be good to you."I pushed his hand away. "I don't need you to be good to me.""Gregory, I'll say this one more time. I'm not forgiving you because I never blamed you in the first place.""What's past is past. I've started a new

After parting ways with Gregory, I was still a little shaken. He had no idea why I'd been by his side all those years. If his system mission had anything to do with me—did that mean he'd keep showing up in my life?It bothered me. My feelings about Gregory were complicated—messy, even. I couldn't quite name what I felt.Forget it. I shook the thought away. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Grayson's memories back.I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door, setting the fruit on the table. I tied on my apron and headed toward the kitchen."Grayson, I got your favorite persimmons today. I'll start cooking—just rest for a bit. Dinner'll be ready soon."But the voice that answered wasn't his."Hi there. I'm Grayson's coworker. He stepped out for a bit—should be back soon."I turned around. A young woman stood in the living room—pretty, with delicate features and a bright, confident smile. She introduced herself. "I'm Donna White.""We had a project to go over, so I came b
