Chapter 10

Author: Rui Rui
Back in my room, Gregory showed up within minutes.

I knew exactly what he'd come to talk about—whatever his buddies had been pushing him on.

And sure enough, he sat down and cut straight to the chase. "Nancy doesn't want me sacrificing my happiness to keep her alive. She refuses to accept your heart this way."

"I'm sorry. About the marriage—I'm taking it back. But I'll grant you one wish. Anything. As long as it's not marriage."

It all clicked. Nancy's words that day in the restroom—I'm not going to let that wedding happen. This was her move.

I looked at him, calm as still water. "My wish is—move the surgery up."

Gregory's composure cracked. He stared at me for a long moment before finally finding his voice. "That's your wish? The only thing you want is to have the surgery earlier?"

I nodded, nothing but clarity in my eyes. "Yes. I want you to see Wilson小姐 healthy as soon as possible."

And I'd get to see Grayson healthy too.

Gregory. You get what you want. I get what I want. Everyone wins.

He was completely thrown. He'd pictured a hundred different ways I'd react—tears, begging, throwing out demands he'd have to shut down. Not this.

If I'd sobbed, pleaded, thrown a fit—it would've been easier to handle.

He rubbed his brow, frowning hard. Finally, he said, "Cynthia... why do you love me this much?"

Our eyes met. And through his dark gaze, I saw someone else. The one I'd loved and lost.

I smiled, my voice steady as stone. "I came to this world for you."

It was the truth. He was the whole reason I existed here.

But Gregory heard it as a confession. Something flickered in his eyes. After a pause, he said, "After the transplant, I'll prepare a surprise for you. Consider it my apology."

I smiled softly, then reached for a box by the bed and handed it to him. "Funny you say that. I've got a surprise for you too."

He blinked, confused. He started to open it—but I stopped him.

"Wait. Don't open it until after my surgery."

"Why?"

"Because the surprise only works that day."

Inside the box was a single item—a recording pen.

The one with Nancy and her friends.

This was my gift to him. Repayment for the thirty slaps. Repayment for those three hours in the freezing ocean.

Gregory didn't catch the weight behind my words. Surgery was tomorrow—he didn't want to fight about something this small.

He gripped the box tight and nodded.

---

Surgery day. I was wheeled into the OR in a sterile white gown.

As I moved past him in the hallway, Gregory stood watching. Something in his chest seized—so violently it knocked the color from his face.

Like something important was slipping away. Like he was losing something he couldn't name.

He grabbed the surgeon's arm before he could follow me in, his voice rough. "Are you absolutely sure the artificial heart won't fail?"

The doctor nodded quickly. "Mr. Evans, the technology is well-established. Miss Martinez will be fine."

He finally breathed.

Then he sat down on the bench outside.

Inside the OR, I stared up at the blinding white lights, my heart pounding so loud it filled my ears.

Finally. Finally.

I'd waited so long for this.

Soon—everything would end.

My love would wake up. And everything would go back to the way it was supposed to be.

The noises around me started to blur. Then—darkness.

I don't know how long I was out. But when the transplant was done, the voice I'd been waiting for finally came through—

"Congratulations, Cynthia. Mission complete. Your lover has been resurrected. You will now be removed from this world."

The next second—flatline. The monitor screamed.

The last day, he wanted a proper goodbye. We agreed to meet at the lake in Central Park.It was winter now. Few people around. Just a few swans paddling near the shore, begging for food.I tossed them pieces of bread, and they let out happy little calls.Gregory stood a few steps away, watching the scene with a quiet, satisfied look.If he could see this every day, how wonderful that would be.But it was only a fantasy. The minutes ticked by, pulling him closer to the moment he would have to leave. One last time, he let himself be selfish. He walked up to me and pulled me into his arms. The familiar scent of his cologne hit me, and my first instinct was to push him away. But he was taller, stronger. I couldn't break free.It made me uneasy. I didn't want to linger in his hold. I just wanted to get out.Just as I was starting to panic, a firm hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me out of his embrace.I spun around, startled, and met Grayson's gentle eyes. For the first time in a long ti

Early the next morning, I showed up at the hospital with breakfast.Gregory was already packed, standing by the door when I arrived. He smiled when he saw me and walked over to greet me. "Already checked myself out. Different world, but basically the same process."I stared at him, confused. He seemed like a different person. One night, and suddenly he was this at peace?Seeing my doubt, he explained. "I thought it through. The only reason I was so hung up on this was because I thought you loved me that much and I had never treated you right.""Now that we've cleared the air, I have no reason to hold on.""And you were right. My mission was to get you to forgive me. Since you have, I can go back anytime.""But before I do, could you give me three days?""Don't worry. I won't ask for anything crazy. I just want to have a meal with you. See some sights. Then I'll go. I won't bother you again."I hesitated, then gave a small nod.Even Gregory hadn't realized that real love meant letting g

For the first time, I realized how humiliating it was to lay everything bare.I had done so much for him, yes. But I had also lied to him.And I had given him my heart, a debt paid in full. Neither of us owed the other anything. But now he had saved me, and that put me in his debt again.I hated that. Those hundred tasks? I had done them willingly. He did not owe me an apology.I thought for a long time before I spoke."Gregory. I never loved you. I got close to you for another man."His face changed instantly. The worry in his brow spread like tangled vines."You're lying. Cynthia, tell me you're lying.""You made that up so I would give up. I don't believe it. Not a single word."I did not stop. I kept going."Five years ago, my lover died saving me in a car crash.""I was broken, completely hollow. Then a system appeared and gave me a mission: do one hundred things for a man, and my lover would come back to life. That man was you.""Think about it. Wasn't my appearance strange?""Be

The air was filled with screams and the pounding of footsteps. I stared at the pool of blood on the floor, my mind spinning.Him. Of all people, him.The ambulance arrived fast and took him to the hospital. Since no one knew him here, I had to go with. Grayson came along too, worried, unwilling to let me face it alone. In the hallway outside the ER, the surgery light blinked red. Just the two of us.Seeing how pale I had gone, Grayson spoke first. "You seem really worried about him. Is he a friend?"I flinched, then shook my head. "No. But he got hurt because of me."A beat of silence passed. Then I looked up at him. "Grayson. Can I tell you a story?"He nodded, and without a word, slipped off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.I sniffled and began."Five years ago, you had that accident. I was shattered. I wanted to follow you. But then a system showed up.""It told me that if I did one hundred things for a man, you would come back to me.""So to be with you, I didn't hesitat

The next morning, I stepped outside, and there Gregory was. Waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He must have been standing there for a while. Dew clung to his long eyelashes. He was striking, always had been. Tall, sharp features, refined. He looked completely out of place in this modest neighborhood. The moment he spotted me, Gregory's face lit up. He strode over, holding up a bag of breakfast."Cynthia!"He pushed it into my hands, his voice almost pleading. "These are all your favorites. I got them myself."I stared at the bag in front of me and couldn't summon a single smile.I let out a tired sigh and met his eyes. "I already told you. Don't come back. Why won't you just listen?"He flinched. The proud, untouchable Gregory, reduced to this. "I just want to be good to you."I pushed his hand away. "I don't need you to be good to me.""Gregory, I'll say this one more time. I'm not forgiving you because I never blamed you in the first place.""What's past is past. I've started a new

After parting ways with Gregory, I was still a little shaken. He had no idea why I'd been by his side all those years. If his system mission had anything to do with me—did that mean he'd keep showing up in my life?It bothered me. My feelings about Gregory were complicated—messy, even. I couldn't quite name what I felt.Forget it. I shook the thought away. Right now, the only thing that mattered was getting Grayson's memories back.I pulled out my keys and unlocked the door, setting the fruit on the table. I tied on my apron and headed toward the kitchen."Grayson, I got your favorite persimmons today. I'll start cooking—just rest for a bit. Dinner'll be ready soon."But the voice that answered wasn't his."Hi there. I'm Grayson's coworker. He stepped out for a bit—should be back soon."I turned around. A young woman stood in the living room—pretty, with delicate features and a bright, confident smile. She introduced herself. "I'm Donna White.""We had a project to go over, so I came b
