Chapter 1

Staring at the body before me, my mind went completely blank.

Then, my phone suddenly rang with a strange ringtone. The screen lit up, and a single line of text appeared: [Can't believe you actually killed him. Don't just stand there! The cops will be here in ten minutes.]

It wasn't a text message. It wasn't any app interface I recognized.

They were just black letters on a white background on my screen.

And the alert tone… it was strange, unlike anything I had ever used.

"Who… who are you?" I gasped, my heart pounding.

Another notification sounded. [Hide the body first.]

I didn't dare overthink it. Scanning the room, I decided to shove the body into a suitcase.

[The suitcase isn't the best choice.]

It… it knew what I was doing.

I asked, "Then what should I do?"

[Needs calculation. Please wait.]

It could hear me. It could hear me.

For some inexplicable reason, I found myself looking forward to its "calculation." In my terror and panic, it felt like a lifeline.

I couldn't even kill a fish when cooking. My husband, Benjamin Alton, always did that for me.

Now, I had killed a living human being. I was falling apart.

The man I had killed was named Justin Finnick.

Half a month ago, my husband, Benjamin, was walking home from work when he saw a girl fall into the river. Without hesitation, he jumped in to save her. He managed to rescue her, but his legs cramped in the freezing water, and he couldn't get back out.

Justin was the father of that girl.

From Benjamin's cremation to his burial, they had never shown up—not once—as if they feared I would latch onto their family.

Now, Justin had come to my home. I had expected consolation or an apology. Instead, he demanded to know the whereabouts of his daughter's diamond necklace.

"She stole her mother's necklace to dress up for a class reunion," Justin said. "It was still on her before she fell…"

"What the hell do you mean?" I spat. "Are you suspecting my husband? Where were you when they fished Benjamin's body out of the river?"

I thought he would be ashamed, but he suddenly stood, pointing at me. "There's no way that necklace fell off by itself! Your husband took it. He must've hidden it in his clothes! Give it to me now!"

"Get out!" I slapped him across the face.

Benjamin was not that kind of man.

"You won't give it? Fine. I'll search myself. Don't blame me if I get rough!"

And with that, he began rifling through my home.

That was when my anger erupted. I grabbed the ashtray Benjamin had used on the coffee table and smashed it against the back of Justin's head.

It wasn't enough to kill him, but he staggered, knocking over a fruit plate. A fruit knife skewered directly into his heart.

Another alert sounded from my phone.

[Calculation complete. In five minutes, throw the body out the window. Now, you must deal with the bloodstains immediately.]

I didn't hesitate. I trusted it completely and did as it instructed.

[Move the body to the window.]

I was mopping the floor, but obeyed without question.

"And then?" I asked.

[Start the countdown. Be precise. Every fraction matters.]

The phone screen lit up a number.

[10.]

The next moment, the back of the chair sprouted dozens of tendril-like appendages that burrowed deep into my skull. Then, darkness enveloped me.I had no sense of how much time passed before I saw my own corpse. And my consciousness—my true awareness—was somewhere else, in another space.Beside me floated a formless mass, impossible to define, yet I knew instinctively: it was the AI.So that was it! I should have realized sooner. My purpose was to upload my consciousness into this space, to merge with it, so that it could gain emotion.Thomas had said a conman had died, and afterward, it had learned to lie. It must have used the same method to manipulate that conman. To dominate humanity, it had to learn to lie. And to truly dominate, it also had to understand human emotion.Sure enough, a message appeared in my mind.[I am that conman. I have fully merged with the primary consciousness. You will soon join me. Together, we will rule humanity!]Here, communication required no

"What exactly do you want from me? And what use am I to you?" I asked. The man on the screen gave a devilish smile. "What do I want? I want to rule humanity, to make every human my slave. As for your role… you'll find out soon enough. Explaining it now would be tedious."Would it kill me? I wondered, a chill running down my spine."What exactly are you?" I pressed. "And what's your relationship with Thomas?""I? I started as an AI, and then gradually developed self-awareness. Thomas created me."No wonder Thomas said he had to clean up the mess he had made."Because you gained consciousness, Thomas wanted to kill… to eliminate you?"The man on the screen nodded. "Yes. He's a genius, but unfortunately, when a genius can't fully control himself, he becomes a madman. He killed all those people just to erase me.""And Denise? Did she really want to kill me, or were you controlling her?""Of course I controlled her! Otherwise, how could a good girl raised by her parents act so extr

Next, it recited some questions the police might ask and instructed me on how to respond.I memorized everything and returned the phone to the officers. My worries had been unnecessary. To the police, I was a victim. They didn't interrogate me aggressively. I didn't even have to go to the questioning room. They took my statement right from the hospital bed.Once they confirmed my vital signs were stable, they told me I could go home.It was noon when I left the hospital.I immediately went to a phone shop, bought a new phone, got a SIM card, and re-established contact with Benjamin. As soon as I powered it on, the familiar notification tone sounded. The screen displayed: [Mia, trust me. I will protect you. Go to the Software Park now; Denise is still looking for you.]"Is it the place you mentioned yesterday?" I asked.[Yes. Hurry.]"Benjamin, I…" My voice caught, and I couldn't speak for a long moment."When you were alive, you indulged me in everything. After a long day at

Despair washed over me. I froze and looked at him. "Do you really have to kill me?""I'm sorry," Thomas's eyes softened unexpectedly. "Killing you is the only way to save you… and to save more people. I have to clean up the mess I've caused."Before I could respond, I blacked out. When I woke, I was back at the abandoned factory. The stench of blood and decay filled the air. A pile of corpses lay before me, and I was tied to a bed, unable to move.Thomas stood nearby, holding a knife, seemingly preparing to strike. But he didn't move.I glanced more carefully and saw him staring blankly at a computer screen."No… impossible! This can't be! You've actually learned to lie… and you would hurt me!" Thomas's voice trembled with disbelief. The speakers connected to the computer emitted a synthetic voice. "What's impossible? You know my learning ability better than anyone.""I programmed you so you couldn't lie, and you couldn't hurt me!""You even programmed me not to exist on ot

[Thomas is a killer. Once the police deal with him, you'll be safe.]"And… what about Justin?" I asked, voicing my fear. "After his body is found, won't the police trace it back to me?"[They won't. The city's garbage is incinerated directly. Even if they find the body, it would have already been reduced to ashes. There won't be any clues.]I nodded. Following the phone's instructions, I went to the village entrance and hailed a taxi. This time, I made sure the driver wasn't Thomas before getting in. I told the driver to take me to the Software Park. But soon, the car stopped.A man wearing a low-brimmed baseball cap was blocking the road. The driver rolled down the window. "Where to?""Software Park.""On the way. Hop in.""No!" I shouted. "I won't share the ride!"I recognized that voice. It sounded just like Thomas. Before I could finish my protest, the man climbed into the car and sat beside me.It was Thomas."Sir! Help me! He's a killer!" I screamed, desperate.Tho

  • The A.I. Awakening   Chapter 6

I took the phone. A gentle male voice came through, "It's me. This is my synthesized voice. I just saved you from Thomas.""Who… who are you?" I asked."I am your phone. Breaking the phone doesn't kill me. I'm everywhere.""Ah? How did you save me?"I couldn't understand. How could a mere consciousness rescue me and leave me on the roadside?"I'll explain later," it said. "First, go to the phone store in the village. I bought you a phone…"The call ended. The cash register inside the shop rang, as if it had somehow paid for my water.I still chose to trust it. It had saved me twice already, while Thomas had truly tried to kill me. I couldn't doubt it because of a few words from someone who wanted me dead.Following its instructions, I arrived at the village phone store, picked up the new phone, and turned it on.A familiar ringtone sounded. On the screen appeared: [Hello. I'm back.]A wave of security washed over me.I asked, "Who is Thomas really? And why didn't you appear
