“Don’t let her reach the depot.”

The voice faded into static.

Nobody moved. Even the injured soldier had gone silent, his fingers clenched around the edge of the seat. Kael held the radio in one hand and stared at it as if he could force the speaker to explain itself.

Then his gaze shifted to me.

The figure was still visible through the rear window, one arm raised toward our vehicle. It stood in the middle of the highway, motionless beneath the red haze hanging over the city.

“Driver,” Kael sai

Someone had changed my registration file. For several seconds, nobody at the council table moved. The unauthorized entry remained on the screen, accusing me of concealing an ability and a second storage container I had never declared because neither existed in the way the record claimed.Aurelia was still staring at it.I remembered the note in her handwriting.Do not let them bond with her.“Who had access to my file after I submitted it?” I asked. The registration clerk swallowed. “I can’t confirm that without checking the audit records.”“Then preserve those records. Don’t let anyone overwrite them.”Councilor Venn looked displeased, but Kael insisted the discrepancy be formally recorded and that my supplies remain untouched while the review was suspended. After a tense exchange, she agreed to pause the inventory inspection until the registration office could explain the unauthorized amendment. It wasn’t justice. It was a delay. But a delay meant my emergency reserve stayed mine.O

I barely slept after finding Aurelia’s note.Do not let them bond with her.I kept it folded in my pocket, even after Kael, Lucien, Darius, and Zane finished discussing what it might mean. None of them could explain who they were or why Aurelia—or someone using her handwriting—wanted to keep them away from me.By morning, I had reached one conclusion: I couldn’t afford to trust the note blindly. But I couldn’t ignore it, either. The summons arrived before breakfast.A Haven Nine officer stood outside our quarters with a slate in one hand and two guards behind him.“Odette Turner. The council requires you in the registration hall. Bring your inventory record and all declared supplies.”My fingers tightened around the registration papers. After yesterday’s dispute with Martin and the Turner family, I should have expected the council to make another move. Still, the timing bothered me. Someone had already questioned my identity, challenged my ownership of my supplies, and tried to turn t

Aurelia’s question followed me long after she walked away. When the eastern gate opens tomorrow night, will you save the child first—or the man standing beside you?I couldn’t decide what bothered me more: the certainty in her words or the way she’d looked genuinely surprised when I questioned her.“Are you planning to stare at that registration slip until it explains itself?” Lucien asked.I folded it and tucked it into my pocket. “No.”“Pity. I hoped it might tell us where we’re sleeping.”Kael returned from speaking to a guard. “Temporary quarters in the western residential block. Inventory review is at eight tomorrow. Until then, we stay in the approved area.”“And food?”“Basic rations tonight. Our full allocation depends on the assessment.”Before I could reply, Aurelia approached with a basket of bread, wrapped vegetables, and sealed water bottles.“I thought you might need something before the evening distribution,” she said. “Registration can take hours.”Aurelia looked at me

“Dodie.”My breath caught.Only my mother had ever called me that. For several seconds, I couldn't hear the guards, the impatient survivors, or Martin's complaints behind me. I stared at the woman in the dark uniform, searching her face for an explanation she hadn't offered.“Who told you that name?” I asked. Her expression softened, but she didn't answer immediately.“Let's settle this dispute first.”That wasn't an answer. It was a postponement, and I had a feeling she knew exactly what she was doing.Martin stepped forward before I could question her again.“There's nothing to settle! She stole money that belonged to our family. You should detain her and inspect everything she brought inside!”The woman turned toward him.“Do you have evidence to support your accusation?”“Of course I do!”“Then show me.”Martin hesitated. It was a small pause, but it was enough to weaken the confidence he'd carried into the checkpoint. He had expected the guards to believe him because he'd spoken

I couldn't stop thinking about the system's message long after the screen disappeared.First bond candidate has noticed you.I still had no idea which of the four men it meant—or what would happen when that bond developed. With infected roaming outside and our supplies running low, I couldn't afford to waste time searching for answers.By the time Haven Nine's fortified walls appeared ahead, I had forced the question to the back of my mind. Whatever the system wanted from me, I would deal with it on my terms. The first thing I learned about Haven Nine was that the people with powers got to skip the line. The second was that everyone else had to pay for the privilege of standing behind its walls.A man walked through the fortified gate with a metal crate floating beside him. Guards waved him past the registration desk without checking his belongings. Behind him, a mother clutched her feverish daughter while an officer ordered her to return to the end of the ordinary survivors' queue.“

The four names on my interface refused to disappear.Kael Draven. Lucien Vale. Darius Kane. Zane Mercer. All four were connected to an objective I couldn't unlock, and the system had offered no explanation beyond confirming that they were participants.I tried opening each name. Nothing happened. I searched for a help option, a task description, even a tiny symbol that might tell me what I was supposed to do.Nothing.The interface finally closed after I mentally dismissed it for the fifth time.“Great,” I muttered. “Another problem with no instructions.”“You talking to yourself again?”I looked up.Lucien stood near the shelter's entrance, turning a small flashlight between his fingers. His expression carried the familiar hint of amusement that made me wonder whether he was always this irritating or had made a special effort for my benefit.“I'm thinking,” I said.“Dangerous habit.”“Would you like me to demonstrate how dangerous?”He laughed and leaned against the doorframe.Outsid
