Chapter 2

Autor: Lil' Grain
'Didn't I work hard today too? Why do you hang out bedding for Derek and Chloe and leave me with a cold piece of blanket?' I didn't bother saying my thoughts out loud. There was no point.

My mother went quiet on the other end of the line. She hadn't expected her always-obedient son to talk back. It didn't last. Her voice slid right back into its usual bossy register.

"You've always been the healthy one, easy to raise," she said. "Your brother and sister are delicate. Is it really so much to ask that you cut them some slack? Why do you get more difficult every year?"

I laughed. Someone who'd spent years sleeping in a space under the stairs that never saw sunlight, eating whatever leftovers were left in the fridge — how healthy did she think that made me? The truth was simpler: she just didn't care.

When I was ten, I'd come down with a fever bad enough to keep me in bed. My parents had been too busy — one shuttling Derek to his instrument lessons, the other dropping Chloe off at preschool — to notice. They'd left me alone in the house all day.

If the neighbors hadn't found me, the fever might have killed me right there. All I ever got for it, afterward, was one careless line, "He's a tough kid. He can take it."

My mother's voice cut back in, irritated. "Why aren't you saying anything? Look at you — I can't even get two words in without you sulking. You used to be the easy one. Be good, and go make up your brother and sister's beds."

Then she hung up.

Before the call cut off, I caught my father and my siblings laughing in the background — something had amused them. The sound grated on me like nails on glass.

Out on the balcony, Derek's and Chloe's bedding hung neatly in a row. I ran my hand over it.

It felt warm. The warmth only made the cold in my chest worse. Even the fabric had been chosen with care — the material, the color, the pattern, all of it soaked in a kind of attention I'd never once been given.

Then I looked back at my own bed, tucked into that cramped space under the stairs, piled with clothes nobody else wanted anymore. What was actually spread across it barely counted as bedding — mismatched sizes, colors that clashed. The irony wasn't lost on me.

Once the beds were made, I sat down on the couch and scrolled through my phone without really looking for anything.

Derek's latest post showed the four of them beaming for the camera, captioned: [The simplest happiness is just being together as a family.]

Underneath, my parents and Chloe had left a chorus of likes and comments: [We'll always be this happy.]

One relative had noticed something was off and commented: [Where's Ryan? I don't see him in the photo.]

My mother had answered fast: [He's just a little difficult sometimes.] She'd added a sighing emoji.

I knew exactly what she meant by that. She meant the tension I'd carried my whole life — the way wanting to be loved had only ever made me more careful, more guarded, around the people who were supposed to love me back. But Mom, I wanted to say, that carefulness was me trying as hard as I could to belong.

I was still scrolling through years of my mother's old posts, tears running down my face without my even noticing, when the four of them came home, laughing.

The laughter stopped dead the second they saw me.

Derek's voice cut through the silence, complaining. "You scared me half to death! What's with the gloomy act this late at night? Who's that supposed to be for?" He pressed a hand to his chest, breathing a little too hard.

Before I could get a word out, the whole family had turned to him, full of concern. "Derek, are you okay? Does anything hurt? Should we take you to the hospital?"

"Don't be scared, I'll protect you," Chloe said.

I looked up at all of them. In that moment, I didn't fit into that family, didn't fit with any of them. And the way they looked back at me — it was the way you'd look at something not quite human.

"Here to laugh at Mom and Dad's misery?"Chloe hobbled in on her crutches, sharp-tongued as ever."Feeling pretty pleased with yourself, aren't you, Ryan? My leg's broken, Derek's on the run, Dad's in the hospital — happy now?"I ignored her.Chloe jammed a crutch hard against the floor. "I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?"Mom snapped at her. "Your brother came to see your father. Don't—"Chloe cut her off with a sneer. "He's probably hoping Dad dies sooner rather than later. Last time he got Derek and me in so much trouble, and now he's playing the good son? Give me a break."Trouble? I was the one with two broken ribs. And she was saying I'd gotten her into trouble? That spot in my chest started aching again. Not the bone this time — something else entirely.I finally lifted my head and looked at her."Are you done?"She blinked, clearly not expecting me to stay so calm."Yeah, I'm done. Get out."I turned and started walking away. My mother caught up and grabbed my arm.

I looked down at my mother's hand. It had gone rough, dirt still lodged under the nails. That same hand had peeled apples and shelled shrimp for Derek and Chloe more times than I could count — and never once done anything like that for me.I pulled my arm free."Now that you're desperate, you remember I exist? When I was lying there half-beaten to death — did any of you think of me then?"My mother froze where she stood, tears sliding down her face.I didn't say anything else. I just walked away. Even from a distance, I could still hear her crying behind me.…Mia was cooking when I got home. She took one look at my face and didn't ask anything — just set the food on the table and ladled out a bowl of soup for me."I made potato and rib soup today. Drink up."I sat down and took a sip, and the tears came before I could stop them.Mia didn't say a word. I looked over at her."My mom came to find me. My dad's in the hospital. Chloe broke her leg. Derek's disappeared. She wants

I hung up. Not long after, I turned my phone off entirely. The world finally went quiet. But some things don't sever just because you want them to.A month later, I went to visit Nathan. The second I walked in, I could tell something was wrong."What happened?" I asked.Nathan hesitated, then pulled me down to sit. "Ryan, I need to tell you something. Don't let it get to you too much."I nodded. He sighed. "Something's happened with your family. Derek's racked up a huge debt with some online lenders — nobody's sure exactly how much, but the collectors have already shown up at the house more than once." He lowered his voice. "He's gone into hiding now. Nobody can reach him. Your dad got so worked up his blood pressure spiked to dangerous levels — he's in the hospital. The doctor said if they'd gotten him there any later, it could have killed him."He glanced at me. "Chloe's had it worse. The day the collectors showed up, she got into it with one of them, got shoved, and fell do

"You'd never guess these two were raised by the same parents."I caught my reflection in a nearby window — sallow, gaunt — a world apart from Derek. We looked like we belonged to two different social classes entirely.Mia had circled back to grab something she'd forgotten and walked straight into the scene. She stepped in front of me instantly, shielding me."Kneel all you want. You wanna settle this quietly? Not a chance."All three of their faces went stone gray.Mom broke down sobbing, clutching her chest. "I can't go on like this! What did I do to raise such an ungrateful son! Ryan, how can you be so cold-hearted?"Dad's voice was harsh. "Ryan, are you trying to send your mother and me to an early grave? You ungrateful child."Derek started crying too. "Mom, Dad, we'll figure out something else. Please don't make yourselves sick over this."Mia guided me away. Behind us, the three of them dissolved into hysterics.…Word that Chloe had been arrested tore through the exten

It was Mia Bennett. When I opened my eyes again, Chloe was curled up on the floor, wincing in pain. Mia had her arms around me, worry written all over her face."Ryan, are you okay?"I shook my head weakly. "Why are you here?"Her eyes welled up. "Don't talk. Save your strength." She helped me sit up.Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Mom, Dad, and Derek clustered around Chloe. They rounded on Mia, furious."How could you hit her? We're calling the police!"Mia's voice went cold. "Go ahead and call. I'd love to see who they actually arrest. Are you two even fit to call yourselves Ryan's parents?"Dad had nothing to say to that. Mom tried to bluff her way through it anyway."This is a family matter. We have every right to discipline our own son. What business is it of some outsider's?"I pulled together the last of my strength and said, "Not anymore. None of you deserves to call yourselves my family."Then my body gave out, and everything went dark.I woke up in a hos

  • The Abandoned Son   Chapter 4

All I could make out was the three of them crowded around Derek, faces full of concern. Me, they looked at like I was their enemy — every one of them jabbing a finger in my face, expressions twisted with fury.It took a while before I could make out what they were actually saying.Dad said, "Ryan, have we spoiled you too much? You actually had the nerve to steal from your brother!"Mom said, "Hand that pendant back to Derek right now, or don't expect me to care about you as family anymore!"Chloe said, "If you don't give it back, I'll beat it out of you!"I laughed. The taste of blood filled my mouth.None of them had bothered to ask me a single question — they'd taken Derek's word alone and decided I was a thief. And that pendant? Grandma had actually given one to each of us, me and Derek both. He'd lost his and simply taken mine instead. At the time, I hadn't minded — we were family, I figured, so what did it matter whose was whose. Looking back now, that had been nothing
