Chapter 3

Author: Lil' Grain
I looked at them and let out a scornful laugh.

Chloe shoved me, furious. "Ryan, what is your problem? You scared my brother half to death, and you're laughing? I'm telling you — if anything happens to my brother, you and I are done."

The shove caught me off guard. I stumbled back, my shin cracking against the coffee table with a dull thud. Pain shot up my leg, and somehow that only made my laughing worse.

Chloe couldn't get through a sentence without calling him "my brother." She'd apparently forgotten I was her brother too. I couldn't even remember the last time she'd called me that. In this family, it seemed I'd been an outsider from the very start.

Something flickered across my mother's face — the closest thing to concern I'd get. She started to come check on me.

Then Derek let out a sharp cry. "My chest — it hurts!"

She spun around immediately, wrapping her arms around him. "Don't be scared, sweetheart, Mom will take you to the hospital."

Derek's eyes went red. "Mom, I'm fine. Go check on Ryan."

My mother didn't even glance my way. "Leave him. He's always been the healthy one — a little bump won't hurt him."

That line again.

Something in me broke. I swept everything off the table in one motion, sent them crashing to the floor.

"Why?" I shouted. "What did I ever do to deserve this? If you don't love me, why did you even have me?"

The room went dead silent. My parents froze.

Then Chloe's voice cut through, imperious as ever. "Ryan, have you lost your mind? How dare you talk to Mom and Dad like that!" She squared up like she meant to hit me.

My father caught her arm. "Chloe, don't. He's your brother."

For one second, something in me hesitated. Was he actually protecting me? For years, no matter what happened, I'd been the one who took the blame — I was used to it by now. Being shielded like this felt so foreign that I almost didn't believe it was real.

Chloe's voice softened. "But Dad, listen to how he's talking to you—"

My father's expression darkened. "Let him say what he needs to say. We've owed him this for a long time."

That was the moment the tears I'd been holding back finally spilled over. You finally remembered I exist.

The peace didn't last more than a few minutes.

Derek had gone back to his room to rest, but he came storming back out, eyes red from crying, and rounded on me.

"Did you touch my things?"

I stared at him, confused.

He kept going. "The pendant — the one I left on my desk. Where is it? Ryan, you're the only one who's been in my room."

He was crying harder now. "I know you feel like Mom and Dad pay more attention to me, but that doesn't give you the right to steal from me. Grandma left me that pendant. It matters to me."

He grabbed my arm, pleading. "Just give it back, please. I'll give you anything you want — anything but that pendant. And I'll make sure Mom and Dad start paying more attention to you too. Okay?"

His sudden shift in tone threw me off enough that I flinched back, and the motion nearly knocked him off his feet.

Of course, that was the exact moment our parents and Chloe came rushing in to see what the noise was. All they saw was Derek stumbling — and in their eyes, that made it my fault.

The slap landed before I even saw it coming. My mother's palm cracked across my face so hard my ears rang, everything around me blurring into a single smear of sound. I couldn't make out a word anyone was saying.

"Here to laugh at Mom and Dad's misery?"Chloe hobbled in on her crutches, sharp-tongued as ever."Feeling pretty pleased with yourself, aren't you, Ryan? My leg's broken, Derek's on the run, Dad's in the hospital — happy now?"I ignored her.Chloe jammed a crutch hard against the floor. "I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?"Mom snapped at her. "Your brother came to see your father. Don't—"Chloe cut her off with a sneer. "He's probably hoping Dad dies sooner rather than later. Last time he got Derek and me in so much trouble, and now he's playing the good son? Give me a break."Trouble? I was the one with two broken ribs. And she was saying I'd gotten her into trouble? That spot in my chest started aching again. Not the bone this time — something else entirely.I finally lifted my head and looked at her."Are you done?"She blinked, clearly not expecting me to stay so calm."Yeah, I'm done. Get out."I turned and started walking away. My mother caught up and grabbed my arm.

I looked down at my mother's hand. It had gone rough, dirt still lodged under the nails. That same hand had peeled apples and shelled shrimp for Derek and Chloe more times than I could count — and never once done anything like that for me.I pulled my arm free."Now that you're desperate, you remember I exist? When I was lying there half-beaten to death — did any of you think of me then?"My mother froze where she stood, tears sliding down her face.I didn't say anything else. I just walked away. Even from a distance, I could still hear her crying behind me.…Mia was cooking when I got home. She took one look at my face and didn't ask anything — just set the food on the table and ladled out a bowl of soup for me."I made potato and rib soup today. Drink up."I sat down and took a sip, and the tears came before I could stop them.Mia didn't say a word. I looked over at her."My mom came to find me. My dad's in the hospital. Chloe broke her leg. Derek's disappeared. She wants

I hung up. Not long after, I turned my phone off entirely. The world finally went quiet. But some things don't sever just because you want them to.A month later, I went to visit Nathan. The second I walked in, I could tell something was wrong."What happened?" I asked.Nathan hesitated, then pulled me down to sit. "Ryan, I need to tell you something. Don't let it get to you too much."I nodded. He sighed. "Something's happened with your family. Derek's racked up a huge debt with some online lenders — nobody's sure exactly how much, but the collectors have already shown up at the house more than once." He lowered his voice. "He's gone into hiding now. Nobody can reach him. Your dad got so worked up his blood pressure spiked to dangerous levels — he's in the hospital. The doctor said if they'd gotten him there any later, it could have killed him."He glanced at me. "Chloe's had it worse. The day the collectors showed up, she got into it with one of them, got shoved, and fell do

"You'd never guess these two were raised by the same parents."I caught my reflection in a nearby window — sallow, gaunt — a world apart from Derek. We looked like we belonged to two different social classes entirely.Mia had circled back to grab something she'd forgotten and walked straight into the scene. She stepped in front of me instantly, shielding me."Kneel all you want. You wanna settle this quietly? Not a chance."All three of their faces went stone gray.Mom broke down sobbing, clutching her chest. "I can't go on like this! What did I do to raise such an ungrateful son! Ryan, how can you be so cold-hearted?"Dad's voice was harsh. "Ryan, are you trying to send your mother and me to an early grave? You ungrateful child."Derek started crying too. "Mom, Dad, we'll figure out something else. Please don't make yourselves sick over this."Mia guided me away. Behind us, the three of them dissolved into hysterics.…Word that Chloe had been arrested tore through the exten

It was Mia Bennett. When I opened my eyes again, Chloe was curled up on the floor, wincing in pain. Mia had her arms around me, worry written all over her face."Ryan, are you okay?"I shook my head weakly. "Why are you here?"Her eyes welled up. "Don't talk. Save your strength." She helped me sit up.Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Mom, Dad, and Derek clustered around Chloe. They rounded on Mia, furious."How could you hit her? We're calling the police!"Mia's voice went cold. "Go ahead and call. I'd love to see who they actually arrest. Are you two even fit to call yourselves Ryan's parents?"Dad had nothing to say to that. Mom tried to bluff her way through it anyway."This is a family matter. We have every right to discipline our own son. What business is it of some outsider's?"I pulled together the last of my strength and said, "Not anymore. None of you deserves to call yourselves my family."Then my body gave out, and everything went dark.I woke up in a hos

  • The Abandoned Son   Chapter 4

All I could make out was the three of them crowded around Derek, faces full of concern. Me, they looked at like I was their enemy — every one of them jabbing a finger in my face, expressions twisted with fury.It took a while before I could make out what they were actually saying.Dad said, "Ryan, have we spoiled you too much? You actually had the nerve to steal from your brother!"Mom said, "Hand that pendant back to Derek right now, or don't expect me to care about you as family anymore!"Chloe said, "If you don't give it back, I'll beat it out of you!"I laughed. The taste of blood filled my mouth.None of them had bothered to ask me a single question — they'd taken Derek's word alone and decided I was a thief. And that pendant? Grandma had actually given one to each of us, me and Derek both. He'd lost his and simply taken mine instead. At the time, I hadn't minded — we were family, I figured, so what did it matter whose was whose. Looking back now, that had been nothing
