Chapter 4

Author: Mini Min
I texted back quietly, "My head hurts. I can't review any reports."

A little after 4:00 pm, someone was already singing Henry's praises in the team chat.

"Henry really gets things done fast!"

"This is how it should've been. Certain rule-quoting fossils who act like robots should've stepped aside ages ago!"

Basking in the empty praise, Henry got carried away. He tagged me in the company-wide channel.

"Ronan, from where I sit, you're the one who made reimbursements complicated. Everyone's been thrilled since I took over."

I ignored him.

When I didn't bite, Henry got irritated. For a while after that, he made a point of sending me his progress updates every day.

Unlike prior practice, he signed off on every advance payment request from the sales and operations department and even threw in a few extra advances.

"Approved East Coast Sales Team's one-million-dollar team-building budget for Q3 and Q4."

I looked at the message he sent me and said nothing. That sales team had been losing money for two consecutive quarters, and Victor had already been considering layoffs.

On top of that, Janet showed up every day in a new outfit with a new bag, parading them in front of me.

When our eyes met, she lifted her chin and said, "Some watchdogs get uppity when they're guarding someone else's purse strings. If the dog won't heel, you replace it."

Henry fell into step behind her, siding with her. "Ms. Walker, that's a new crocodile skin bag, right? Name a number and I'll reimburse you right away."

Suddenly, a coworker from another department came over. "Ronan, the account is short a dollar. Do you want to get everyone to double-check?"

I rubbed my temples. "My eyes hurt. I can't do this anymore."

Henry shouldered him aside. "Double-check what? What a hassle. It's just a dollar. I'll cover it."

Then, another coworker approached. "Ronan, the tax filing deadline is right around the corner. What should we do?"

Henry rolled his eyes. "File what? Ronan just doesn't have the chops. After all these years, he still can't handle taxes. I'll take the auditors out for dinner, grease the wheels, and save our company a ton of money!"

I watched them as if I were watching a ship go under. This time, I refused to play along.

Soon enough, the month-end close arrived. After I confirmed all backups and handovers were done, I opened the HR system and cashed out my remaining paid time off.

A second later, I got Janet's reply. "Your leave is approved. You're an eyesore here, so leave early!"

I wasn't surprised. I shut down my computer with a satisfied click and got ready to head out. But the moment I stood, my phone rang.

Victor sounded awful, voice tight with panic. "Ronan, what the hell are you trying to pull? Where's the money in the company account? Dozens of transfers were made, totaling nearly 80 million dollars! Where's my money?"

I kept my tone even. "Mr. Manser, the company account is under Henry Fielder's management. Ms. Walker personally appointed him, with authorization from several department heads. I'm not clear on what was approved or how."

Suddenly, I heard footsteps echoing in the hall, and a coworker burst in, clearly panicked. "People from the tax department are here! They received a system risk flag and are conducting an audit!"

"Hey, everyone. I'm Ronan Cooper, former finance manager. Today I wanted to talk about how to walk out of a garbage company with your spine straight, and yes, by being 'unfeeling.'"I didn't rant or play the victim. In ten minutes, I laid everything out, clean and orderly.I discussed key warning signs to look out for before a company implodes, safeguards for finance professionals, and how to handle a clean, compliant handoff when resigning. At the end of the video, I added, "My former boss swore no one would ever hire me. But I want to see for myself. I thought it through and decided I don't want to work for anyone anymore."I want to be my own boss. So starting today, I'll be posting financial education videos regularly. I hope you'll like, follow, and stick around."The video went viral almost instantly. The comments quickly turned into a venting session for finance professionals."So it wasn't just my company!""Ronan, please start a course. My boss wants me to cook two sets

A week later, my former subordinate, Peter Anderson, slipped me a message. The company had been placed under a formal investigation. The outrageous expense reports Henry had approved were merely the trigger. He hadn't just approved things improperly. Investigators found he exploited temporary system access to award himself several bonuses. The sums were small, but the line had been crossed. The tax authorities and the police followed the trail and uncovered more.Edward's sales department had been using fake invoices for years to funnel cash into a slush fund. In total, the amounts rose to a level of serious embezzlement.Janet treated the corporate accounts as her personal ATM, buying bags and jewelry and even charging her home's property fees to the company. As finance director, she demonstrated a lack of basic financial competence and abused her authority. The violations were obvious.By then, all three had already been taken into custody. Anyone could see they were staring d

The auditors slid a stack of documents across the table and got straight to the point."Mr. Cooper, we were engaged to audit the company's recent finances. Our preliminary review indicates multiple high-value irregular outflows around the time of your departure."These involve fraudulent invoices and misappropriation of funds, and the totals are significant."When I stayed quiet, one of them continued, "As the finance manager at the time, you're required to give an explanation."I skimmed the documents. As expected, they were the expense reports Henry had approved, and they were jaw-dropping.I kept my tone even. "I submitted my formal resignation and completed the handover. I was no longer the finance manager. The handover is fully supported by email correspondence."I stated clearly that all subsequent work and responsibility would be handled solely by the intern, Henry Fielder. Janet Walker, the finance director, and several department heads who were present can testify."The

The elevator doors slid shut, sealing off the chaos. On the first day of my leave, I turned off all work chat notifications and set my phone to silent mode. The quiet felt almost unreal.I no longer had to explain why receipts needed to be verified or keep walking people through how to attach them properly.I no longer had to stay up late reconciling a one-cent discrepancy, and I certainly didn't have to cater to Janet, who knew nothing about finance but still barked orders. Those former coworkers mocked me for being unfeeling. I wondered if they had ever considered that if they hadn't kept repeating the same mistakes, I wouldn't have had to keep correcting them. With work off my back, I slept until I woke up on my own. It had been ages since that happened. After I got up, I hit the farmers' market for fresh produce and made myself a full breakfast. My phone lit up now and then with unknown numbers and calls from the office, but I ignored them all.I didn't have to guess. It was

As I passed Henry, I stopped, leaned close, and whispered, "Henry, remember that dollar you patched in? A one-dollar mismatch didn't matter much. But if you were casual enough to cover even that, what about the rest of the accounts you handled? Do you think they would survive an audit?"Henry froze. On the computer screen in front of him was a fake invoice he'd issued for someone as a favor, totaling over a million dollars. The investigators approached and requested access to the computer.Henry panicked and tried to block them. "Wait. This is my computer! You can't just go through someone else's computer without permission. What's wrong with the invoices?"I'm warning you. Stop making false accusations! Why does it matter how many invoices I issue? I'm the company's finance manager. If I decide to issue them, I will!"Despite his attempts to argue and intervene, the investigator proceeded and launched the tax investigation by the book. After a stretch of silence, the whole offic

I smirked and said in a light, upbeat voice, "Mr. Manser, I'm on leave. When it ends, my 30-day notice will be up. By law, I'm entitled to resign whether you approve it or not. From now on, the company no longer concerns me."I tapped the screen and ended the call without hesitation. On the other end, Victor's angry shouting was cut off abruptly.Meanwhile, Janet, who had been acting all high and mighty in the office, froze the second she saw the investigators from the tax department. Before she could react, her phone lit up with back-to-back calls from her husband. She picked up, softened her voice, and said, "Honey—"But Victor cut her off, practically roaring. "What did you have Henry sign off on? Where did the funds in that account go? I want a report right now! Are you out of your mind?"How's the company supposed to operate with an expense this big? And why wasn't I informed?"Janet hesitated, then let out a playful whine. "Honey, didn't you tell me the company was about to
